Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason or Revelation, or the Religion, Philosophy, and Civilisation of the Ancient Heathen, Contrasted With Christianity and Its Legitimate Consequences Christianity, as the only system that is competent to elevate the world, and which embodies in it all the elements of true religion, true morals, true philosophy, and true civilisation. And by advocating Christianity, it is no: to sermonise, but to take up the system in its principles and opera tions, and compare and contrast it with all other systems. There is a prevailing misconception of it - a one-sided view of its principles and ten dencies, which amounts to an error - by which it is not extended to its per fect work but circumscribed and contracted in its design and powers. It is not sufficiently viewed as a complete, divinely given system, for the restoration and government of the world. It is looked at too Often solely as teaching the fact of a better world, and how we may attain it - and that is a great and most important part - but it is not confined to that, for it does not only simply inculcate our devotional Obligations, but it embraces every thing that relates to our temporal state and social improve ment. It contains the true principles Of political economy, and of all legislative science and gives the grand directions for the amelioration of the physical world, and the education, refinement, and happiness of man. It is the moral lever for upheaving the earth, and all that it inhabit, from every existing false and ruinous position. As the curse was universal on nature, - brute, and man, Christianity is universal, as the universal antidote. Book excerpt: Volume Six of the definitive edition of Thomas Jefferson's papers from the end of his presidency until his death presents 516 documents from 11 March to 27 November 1813. Although free from the cares of government, Jefferson cannot disassociate himself from politics entirely. He recommends to President James Madison during the War of 1812 that gunboats be used to protect the Chesapeake Bay, and writes to his congressional son-in-law, John Wayles Eppes, urging the repayment of the national debt and the reining in of the American banking system. Jefferson remains active and healthy, making trips to his beloved Poplar Forest estate, entertaining visitors at Monticello, and happily supervising the education of his grandchildren and other relations. His correspondence shows no signs of abating--he writes to John Waldo and John Wilson to discuss the improvement of English orthography, addresses Isaac McPherson as part of a plea for limits on government-sanctioned intellectual-property rights, and provides a study of Meriwether Lewis for Nicholas Biddle's History of the Expedition under the command of Captains Lewis and Clark. Finally, this volume records the most intense period of correspondence between Jefferson and John Adams during their retirement. In an exchange of thirty-one letters, the two men reveal their hopes and fears for the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intellectual dialogue of the highest plane achieved in America, the correspondence between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson spanned half a century and embraced government, philosophy, religion, quotidiana, and family griefs and joys. First meeting as delegates to the Continental Congress in 1775, they initiated correspondence in 1777, negotiated jointly as ministers in Europe in the 1780s, and served the early Republic--each, ultimately, in its highest office. At Jefferson's defeat of Adams for the presidency in 1800, they became estranged, and the correspondence lapses from 1801 to 1812, then is renewed until the death of both in 1826, fifty years to the day after the Declaration of Independence. Lester J. Cappon's edition, first published in 1959 in two volumes, provides the complete correspondence between these two men and includes the correspondence between Abigail Adams and Jefferson. Many of these letters have been published in no other modern edition, nor does any other edition devote itself exclusively to the exchange between Jefferson and the Adamses. Introduction, headnotes, and footnotes inform the reader without interrupting the speakers. This reissue of The Adams-Jefferson Letters in a one-volume unabridged edition brings to a broader audience one of the monuments of American scholarship and, to quote C. Vann Woodward, 'a major treasure of national literature.'

Book excerpt: To many people both inside the Chruch and outside it--what goes on in the Church is either routine or irrelevant. Consequently, what the Church has to say is not very meaningful. Why should people listen to what the Church has to preach and think about it? No one is better qualified to answer this question than Professor Emil Brunner. Dr. Brunner is a teacher of theology in the University at Zurich, Switzerland, and one of the clearest and most constructive religious thinkers of our day. Any book of his is an event because he succeeds so well in combining sound learning with persuasive and readable analysis, and because he is thoroughly acquainted with both American and Continental ways of thinking. In this book, Dr. Brunner sets the claim of the widespread intellectual relativism of contemporary culture. He seeks to show that both Catholic and secular thought misunderstand the relations between reason and revelation because revelation is always subordinated to reason. Brunner reverses the position. He goes back to the Bible and the Reformers and maintains that when reason is subordinated to revelation the preaching of the Gospel is at once true to itself and intelligible. Here is a forceful and thorough volume which helps both believers and unbelievers to understand themselves. -Publisher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title came about over years of sitting in various types of services and speaking to myself, saying "That's not what God was saying" or "That's not what that meant." We find in 2 Timothy 2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Then we find in Acts 17:11, "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." Point being, we shouldn't just accept any and everything we've been taught but go back and see if those things line up. We should always listen with an open mind but then go and verify its validity, hence there are many doctrines that don't line up with scriptural truth. Therefore, God gave me license to print some of the major contradictions. Sometimes we go with what we were taught instead of verifying its truths.
