The ship Perseverance, commanded by Captain Onesimus, leaving the shores of time, with her sails loose, and anchor weighed; bound on a voyage of discovery, in search of the immortality of the human soul, and with a full determination, like Columbus, to convince himself of the existence of another and better world than this, as a counterpoise to this world of sin and death. Satan, the God of this sinful world, and the Prince of darkness, standing on the lantern of the light-house of the age of reason and philosophy, taking a view of Onesimus, casting off his fealty to the Prince of darkness, and leaving the shores of time. No. 4. Christ, the bright and morning star. "Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it? Download or read book The New Birth written by A. T. B. McGowan and published by Christian Focus. This book was released on 1996 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following fourteen years as a parish minister in the Church of Scotland, Dr Andrew McGowan became the first Director of the Highland Theological Institute which opened in Elgin in N.E. Scotland in 1994. He writes with special concern for the young Christian: ?This is a guidebook intended for those who have embarked on the journey of faith.' His principal aim is that they reach a better understanding of what has happened, and will happen, to them as a consequence of the new birth which marks the very beginning of the Christian's new life and leads to the faith which is the gift of God's grace. After helpful chapters on the need for, and the nature of regeneration, there are three chapters dealing with justification, and six on sanctification. In this way, Dr McGowan shows how the new birth leads to a new relationship with God and to holiness of life. John Blanchard remarks in his Foreword, ?All the important doctrines involved in the experience of becoming a Christian are carefully linked together in a way which makes one marvel all the more at the grace of God in salvation.' The treatment of these doctrines is naturally brief as this book is intended as a ?starter'. Should we look forward to a ?finisher'? The reader is presented with an abundance of Bible references as he goes along, rather than at the ends of chapters, and he is advised to ?look up the passages from the Bible as they are mentioned'. In Chapter 13, the author points to how regeneration fits into the doctrines already examined, showing from Romans 8: 28 - 30 how Paul is speaking about the place of born-again people in God's plan, and the certainty of salvation of those upon whom God has set his love in advance. In Chapter 14, Dr McGowan deals with ?effectual calling', to show how the salvation provided for God's people in Jesus Christ takes place. The final chapter addresses the non-Christian reader with searching questions. This book should be available on the church bookstall.

It is essentially based on hundreds of funerary inscriptions from Lycaonia, but takes into account all available literary evidence. It maps the expansion of Christianity in the region and describes the practice of name-giving among Christians, their household and family structures, occupations, and use of verse inscriptions. It gives special attention to forms of charity, the reception of biblical tradition, the authority and leadership of the clergy, popular theology and forms of ascetic Christianity in Lycaonia.

Download or read book The Evangelical Universalist written by Gregory MacDonald and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can an orthodox Christian, committed to the historic faith of the Church and the authority of the Bible, be a universalist? Is it possible to believe that salvation is found only by grace, through faith in Christ, and yet to maintain that in the end all people will be saved? Can one believe passionately in mission if one does not think that anyone will be lost forever? Could universalism be consistent with the teachings of the Bible? In The Evangelical Universalist the author argues that the answer is ‘yes!’ to all of these questions. Weaving together philosophical, theological, and biblical considerations, he seeks to show that being a committed universalist is consistent with the central teachings of the biblical texts and of historic Christian theology.

Book Synopsis The New England Soul : Preaching and Religious Culture in Colonial New England by : Harry S. Stout John B. Madden Master of Berkeley College and Jonathan Edwards Professor of American Christianity Yale University
Download or read book The New England Soul : Preaching and Religious Culture in Colonial New England written by Harry S. Stout John B. Madden Master of Berkeley College and Jonathan Edwards Professor of American Christianity Yale University and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986-09-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the colonial era, New England's only real public spokesmen were the Congregational ministers. One result is that the ideological origins of the American Revolution are nowhere more clearly seen than in the sermons they preached. The New England Soul is the first comprehensive analysis of preaching in New England from the founding of the Puritan colonies to the outbreak of the Revolution. Using a multi-disciplinary approach--including analysis of rhetorical style and concept of identity and community--Stout examines more than two thousand sermons spanning five generations of ministers, including such giants of the pulpit as John Cotton, Thomas Shepard, Increase and Cotton Mather, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan Mayhew, and Charles Chauncy. Equally important, however, are the manuscript sermons of many lesser known ministers, which never appeared in print. By integrating the sermons of ordinary ministers with the printed sermons of their more illustrious contemporaries, Stout reconstructs the full import of the colonial sermon as a multi-faceted institution that served both religious and political purposes, and explicated history and society to the New England Puritans for one and a half centuries.

Book excerpt: "Gardiner Spring's 'The Power of the Pulpit' is an old classic on preaching that truly believes in the pulpit. It deserves to stand on every minister's bookshelf beside Spurgeon's 'Lectures to my Students' and Lloyd-Jones's 'Preaching.' I'll never forget the first time I read Spring's chapter on a minister's personal piety; it overwhelmed me, and moved me to tears, to silence, to confession, and to prayer for mercy and help. This is a great book which every minister should read and re-read, if he really wants to get a sense of the magnitude, awesomeness, power, and beauty of his calling." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke
