Book excerpt: The new field of evolutionary philosophy, unlike its aborted predecessors of the past, is primarily concerned with understanding why Homo sapiens are philosophical in the first place. It is not focused on advocating some specific future reform, but rather in uncovering why humans are predisposed to ask so many questions which, at least at the present stage, cannot be answered. In other words, if evolution is about living long enough to transmit one's genetic code, how does philosophy help in our global struggle for existence? To answer that question and others branched with it, one has to deal with the most complex physical structure in the universe-the human brain. Because it is from this wonder tissue, what Patricia Churchland has aptly called "three pounds of glorious meat," that all of human thought, including our deep and ponderous musings, is built upon. Take away the human brain and you take away all of philosophy. Therefore, if we are to understand why philosophy arose in the first place, we have to begin with delving into the mystery on why consciousness itself arose. And to answer that question we first have to come to grips with Darwin's major contribution to evolutionary theory-natural selection. Why would nature select for awareness, especially the kind of self-conscious awareness endemic to human beings, when survival for almost all species is predicated upon unconscious instincts? What kind of advantage does self-reflective consciousness confer that would allow it to emerge and develop over time?

Book excerpt: How consciousness and quantum energies affect your genetic expression and the development of disease and chronic health conditions • Draws on cellular medicine, genetics, quantum physics, and consciousness studies to define the real underlying mechanisms of disease and how they can be addressed • Explains how consciousness influences quantum DNA to erase the genetic imprint of illness, allowing your body to remember how to function efficiently and effectively • Shares the author’s discoveries that enabled her to successfully heal the cellular dysfunction at the root cause of her cancer, tumors, chronic inflammation, and toxicity • Explores consciousness tools to re-encode DNA and includes detailed scripts for techniques that readers can apply to their own healing journeys Drawing on new advancements in quantum physics, cellular medicine, genetics, and consciousness studies, as well as her own journey of self-healing from a number of challenging health conditions, Althea S. Hawk reveals how you can consciously influence your DNA and re-encode it to improve your health and alter your genetic destiny. Sharing the discoveries that enabled her to successfully heal from her cancer, tumors, toxicity, and inflammatory-related conditions, the author explains how genes are not solely responsible for creating disease. She shows how human physiology interacts with the quantum energies of our external and personal environments and how the resulting information triggers the development and persistence of disease and chronic conditions. We each inherit susceptibilities, but it is our unique experience of these environmental factors, as well as our beliefs, thoughts, and emotions, that alter the way our genes are expressed. Detailing how our DNA is both quantum-energetic and biological-chemical, Hawk explains how your environment and your consciousness influence your quantum DNA, which in turn interacts with your biological DNA. By working directly with energetic information that affects how your quantum and biological DNA communicate, you can alter the expression of your genes by re-encoding the gene sequences on your physical DNA, erasing the imprint of illness and enabling your body to remember how to function properly. Hawk explores consciousness tools and mind-body techniques to re-encode your DNA, such as sound and breathing work, DNA marker removal, recalibration of Akashic information, and cellular communication exercises that readers can apply to their own healing journeys.

Book excerpt: Anne Brewer, a corporate marketing consultant, was stunned when she began receiving telepathic messages from a group of friendly non-physical beings sent to help raise the consciousness of Earth. According to these beings, in eons past, humans were created with only two active strands of DNA which limited our evolutionary potential and inhibited the ability to ascend or function as Spirit in physical form. They taught her a process called 12-Strand DNA Recoding that she has shared with thousands in her book, The Power of Twelve, A New Approach to Empowerment Through 12-Strand DNA Consciousness. Anne's remarkable true story of her DNA Recoding is of great assistance to all of us who desire to achieve our full potential. Her transformative process includes powerful channeled instruction and holistic balancing modalities to quicken manifestations and clear the path to love. The power of the 12-strand DNA energy is illustrated through Anne's examples of how she obtained greater heath, wealth, and happiness in her own life. This power will increase your energy vibration which enables you to operate at a greater potential, increase your psychic abilities, release debilitating emotions of fear and guilt, quicken your skills for manifesting, and enable you ultimately to ascend from the Earth realm to the next phase of your soul growth.

Book excerpt: A top behavioral geneticist makes the case that DNA inherited from our parents at the moment of conception can predict our psychological strengths and weaknesses. In Blueprint, behavioral geneticist Robert Plomin describes how the DNA revolution has made DNA personal by giving us the power to predict our psychological strengths and weaknesses from birth. A century of genetic research shows that DNA differences inherited from our parents are the consistent lifelong sources of our psychological individuality—the blueprint that makes us who we are. Plomin reports that genetics explains more about the psychological differences among people than all other factors combined. Nature, not nurture, is what makes us who we are. Plomin explores the implications of these findings, drawing some provocative conclusions—among them that parenting styles don't really affect children's outcomes once genetics is taken into effect. This book offers readers a unique insider's view of the exciting synergies that came from combining genetics and psychology. The paperback edition has a new afterword by the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving the Mind has two main themes: how ideas about the mind evolved in science; and how the mind itself evolved in nature. The mind came into physical science when it was realised, first, that it is the activity of a physical object, a brain, which makes a mind; and secondly, that our theories of nature are largely mental constructions, artificial extensions of an inner model of the world which we inherited from our distant ancestors. From both of these perspectives, consciousness is the great enigma. If consciousness evolved, however, it is in some sense a material thing whatever else may be said of it. Physics, chemistry, molecular biology, brain function and evolutionary biology - almost the whole of science - is involved, and there can be no expert in all these fields. So the style of the book is simple, almost conversational. The excitement is that we seem to be close to a scientific theory of consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How consciousness appeared much earlier in evolutionary history than is commonly assumed, and why all vertebrates and perhaps even some invertebrates are conscious. How is consciousness created? When did it first appear on Earth, and how did it evolve? What constitutes consciousness, and which animals can be said to be sentient? In this book, Todd Feinberg and Jon Mallatt draw on recent scientific findings to answer these questions—and to tackle the most fundamental question about the nature of consciousness: how does the material brain create subjective experience? After assembling a list of the biological and neurobiological features that seem responsible for consciousness, and considering the fossil record of evolution, Feinberg and Mallatt argue that consciousness appeared much earlier in evolutionary history than is commonly assumed. About 520 to 560 million years ago, they explain, the great “Cambrian explosion” of animal diversity produced the first complex brains, which were accompanied by the first appearance of consciousness; simple reflexive behaviors evolved into a unified inner world of subjective experiences. From this they deduce that all vertebrates are and have always been conscious—not just humans and other mammals, but also every fish, reptile, amphibian, and bird. Considering invertebrates, they find that arthropods (including insects and probably crustaceans) and cephalopods (including the octopus) meet many of the criteria for consciousness. The obvious and conventional wisdom–shattering implication is that consciousness evolved simultaneously but independently in the first vertebrates and possibly arthropods more than half a billion years ago. Combining evolutionary, neurobiological, and philosophical approaches allows Feinberg and Mallatt to offer an original solution to the “hard problem” of consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to unlocking the powers of our DNA to manifest health, wealth, and happiness • Shows how our DNA communicates with those around us and attracts resonant energy--whether positive or negative--to us • Reveals groundbreaking scientific research on the influence of DNA on photons as well as the interactions between DNA and emotions • Provides practical exercises to remove negative influences, build positive visualizations of your desires, and accelerate the manifestation of your wishes Taking the law of attraction to an entirely new level, Pierre Franckh reveals how human DNA has a direct effect on the physical world around us--an effect we can consciously focus to manifest our desires. Sharing groundbreaking experiments on the influence of DNA on photons and on the interactions between emotions and DNA, Franckh explains how our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, whether positive or negative, build a field of resonance around us. Through this quantum field our DNA is continuously communicating our unique vibration to those around us and receiving their unique oscillations in return. By focusing our intentions and removing negativity from our beliefs about ourselves, our past, and our future, we can use our DNA to communicate our thoughts and desires to the universe. Through focused thoughts and intentions we draw the same resonant energy to us, thus bringing our intentions and desires into manifestation. The author shares success stories from the thousands who have taken his seminars and were then able to attract a soul mate, heal themselves or loved ones, or build wealth, sometimes remarkably quickly. He also describes how he discovered the law of resonance through his own self-healing from a degenerative spinal condition. Franckh provides practical exercises to remove inner and outer negative influences that could be blocking your desires, build a positive visualization of your goals, and increase the power of your field of resonance for quicker manifestation. In this inspiring guide to the law of resonance, the author shows how the power to manifest health, wealth, and happiness is within each of us, waiting to be unlocked within our DNA.

Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to understand our Mind- Consciousness- DNA (Genome) - as one single unit and take the support of Cosmic Meditation to comprehend this wholeness and transcend beyond the physical boundaries of our body. Cosmic Consciousness is synonymous to an operating platform for the SOUL to undertake the journey of life and in the process comprehend itself. Our individual Consciousness is nothing but our Soul which is constantly nourished by the Cosmic energies and the moment the Cosmic energy stops its input, the Soul liberates itself from the shackles of the physical body and continues in its journey into eternity. However, our Soul, which is the very engine of our life, needs the support of the body and mind to unleash its power and realize its full potential. This is possible through regular practice of Cosmic Meditation. During deep states of Meditation, MIND is held in a state of silence - a state when the mind stops its flurry of activity of receiving, processing and transmitting THOUGHTS. During this state of MIND, our individual Consciousness takes control of our DNA. Thus Consciousness, MIND and DNA are closely associated with each other. My intense journey into Meditation started with the birth of the book Inner Light Cosmic Meditation. This book is unique because it was not hand written; every word in the book was spoken by Meditation expert Kumar Krishnamoorthy whilst in deep state of Meditation and these were recorded in tapes. By divine grace I got an opportunity to hear the recordings so as to transcribe them and, in the process, I was taken into deep realms of Meditation. It was then that I realized the importance of Meditation in our daily life. Cosmic Meditation has been elucidated in the book in a friendly manner and can be practiced by everyone amidst the daily grind of their hectic life. I started practicing Cosmic Meditation and also got involved in Meditation workshops with Guruji Kumar Krishnamoorthy. The present book "MIND your DNA" is the result of various inputs received from the COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS during of regular practice of COSMIC MEDITATION.With all scientists accepting benefits of meditation there was no need to launch yet another study. I have bridged the understanding of scientific conclusions by going into details of how it happens at the genomic level and correlated them with appropriate spiritual insights from the Vedas and ancient Hindu Scriptures.A lot of research in the field of Molecular biology, genetic engineering, quantum physics, particle physics, CONSCIOUSNESS by neuroscientists and neurobiologists, biophoton research by a certain set of scientists, experiments on water crystals are all inadvertently converging into understanding the secret of functioning of the universe. This book is thus a wholesome diet to the intellectual Minds seeking to get to the depth of the mysterious universe.

Not mere physical bodies, humans possess something else that helps to define them. In this collection of new essays scientists, psychologists, theoretical physicists and other experts in the mind-body connection explore the nature of consciousness and its future as a new paradigm in science. With contributions covering near death experiences, the concept of "free will," conscious spacetime, DNA consciousness, the role of consciousness in the evolution of life, quantum theory and the non-local universe, the scientific basis of love, and the principles and applications of self-hypnosis, this volume clarifies the meaning of consciousness and establishes a model for further exploration into a burgeoning realm of scientific study.

Book excerpt: Enormous advances in science led to compartmentalization of knowledge into specializations and super specializations so much so that a specialist in one area refuses to look into the other area. Interdisciplinary research is mainly in the applied areas. On the other hand some scientists are enthusiastically exploring less traveled paths. Plant neurobiology and Plant intelligence are the areas that are now being rediscovered. Consciousness is yet another field that is making its way into science from spiritual philosophies. How many of us know that the subject of Human Thermodynamics is being explored though by a small group as of now? The area of Epigenetics is expanding. What caused Human evolution? Can selected random [generally explained as accidental] causes result into the formation of a highly ordered / programmed systems as complex as Human beings in the absence of any drive? Is not natural selection a control/filtering mechanism? What is the meaning of “evolutionary forces” or “selection pressure”? Are the concepts of Statistical Process Control, that deal with the random/nonrandom variations, applicable to the process of evolution by natural selection? What causes the evolution of organized societies? Is poverty less, civil human society viable? These are some of the questions that demand interaction among and across the disciplines, which is often delimited by the boundaries and semantics of disciplines. Humanity, after reaping the harvest of Integrated Technologies, is ushering into an era of Converging Technologies which would necessitate communication bridges between Science and Philosophy, Biology, Physics, Agriculture, Medical Sciences, Engineering and Informatics and other diverse areas of knowledge; and that too with escalated openness. In order to encourage such transdisciplinary interactions, forums were launched at www.network.nature.com and http://knol.google.com/k/arvind-kumar-purohit/ and after post publication open review of tangible ideas the works have been published as Transcience Transactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The father of cognitive neuroscience” illuminates the past, present, and future of the mind-brain problem How do neurons turn into minds? How does physical “stuff”—atoms, molecules, chemicals, and cells—create the vivid and various worlds inside our heads? The problem of consciousness has gnawed at us for millennia. In the last century there have been massive breakthroughs that have rewritten the science of the brain, and yet the puzzles faced by the ancient Greeks are still present. In The Consciousness Instinct, the neuroscience pioneer Michael S. Gazzaniga puts the latest research in conversation with the history of human thinking about the mind, giving a big-picture view of what science has revealed about consciousness. The idea of the brain as a machine, first proposed centuries ago, has led to assumptions about the relationship between mind and brain that dog scientists and philosophers to this day. Gazzaniga asserts that this model has it backward—brains make machines, but they cannot be reduced to one. New research suggests the brain is actually a confederation of independent modules working together. Understanding how consciousness could emanate from such an organization will help define the future of brain science and artificial intelligence, and close the gap between brain and mind. Captivating and accessible, with insights drawn from a lifetime at the forefront of the field, The Consciousness Instinct sets the course for the neuroscience of tomorrow.

Book excerpt: In The Birth of the Mind , award-winning cognitive scientist Gary Marcus irrevocably alters the nature vs. nurture debate by linking the findings of the Human Genome project to the development of the brain. Startling findings have recently revealed that the genome is much smaller than we once thought, containing no more than 30,000-40,000 genes. Since this discovery, scientists have struggled to understand how such a tiny number of genes could contain the instructions for building the human brain, arguably the most complex device in the known universe. Synthesizing up-to-the-minute biology with his own original findings on child development, Marcus is the first to resolve this apparent contradiction by chronicling exactly how genes create the infinite complexities of the human mind. Along the way, he dispels the common misconceptions people harbor about genes, and explores the stunning implications of this research for the future of genetic engineering. Vibrantly written and completely accessible to the lay reader, The Birth of the Mind will forever change the way we think about our origins and ourselves.

Damasio has succeeded brilliantly in narrowing the gap between body and mind.” —The New York Times Book Review In recent decades, many philosophers and cognitive scientists have declared the problem of consciousness unsolvable, but Antonio Damasio is convinced that recent findings across multiple scientific disciplines have given us a way to understand consciousness and its significance for human life. In the forty-eight brief chapters of Feeling & Knowing, and in writing that remains faithful to our intuitive sense of what feeling and experiencing are about, Damasio helps us understand why being conscious is not the same as sensing, why nervous systems are essential for the development of feelings, and why feeling opens the way to consciousness writ large. He combines the latest discoveries in various sciences with philosophy and discusses his original research, which has transformed our understanding of the brain and human behavior. Here is an indispensable guide to understanding how we experience the world within and around us and find our place in the universe.
