Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this clearly written and tightly argued book, J. L. Schellenberg addresses a fundamental yet neglected religious problem. If there is a God, he asks, why is his existence not more obvious? Traditionally, theists have claimed that God is hidden in order to account for the fact that the evidence of his existence is as weak as it is. Schellenberg maintains that, given the understanding of God's moral character to which theists are committed, this claim runs into serious difficulty. There are grounds, the author writes, for thinking that the perfectly loving God of theism would not be hidden, that such a God would put the fact of his existence beyond reasonable nonbelief. Since reasonable nonbelief occurs, Schellenberg argues, it follows that there is here an argument of considerable force for atheism. In developing his claim, Schellenberg carefully examines the relevant views of such theists as Pascal, Butler, Kierkegaard, Hick, and others. He clarifies their suggestions concerning Divine hiddenness and shows how they fall short of providing a rebuttal for the argument he presents. That argument, he concludes, poses a serious challenge to theism, to which contemporary theists must seek to respond. The first full-length treatment of its topic, Divine Hiddenness and Human Reason will be of interest to anyone who has sought to reach a conclusion as to God's existence, and especially to theologians and philosophers of religion.

Book excerpt: If any apology be needed for adding another to the various lives of Christ already before the public, it may be well to state how far this little book occupies any independent ground of its own. The object of the writer has been to make some small contribution to the moral and spiritual history of the Life of lives, and this in some especial relation to missionary work and the contact of Christianity with non-Christian religions... Book excerpt: The Divine Human is the human nature made divine. It is the destiny of all of humanity. The human nature, when made divine by regeneration is the corporeal sensual aspect of the self raised to the spiritual perspective of the higher-self. The intellectual aspect of the mind becomes spiritually regenerated, and then the will begins to feel divine. Our intellectual nature when made spiritual, is termed the “church.” It represents our ability to will spiritual love to others as mutual-love. The goal of the Divine Human is a celestial “church,” when humanity begins to feel loved. This is accomplished by the expansion of the spiritual “church” when it takes on the additional affection of charity, and the sensation of conjugial love gets implanted into the will. The experience is like Cosmic Consciousness or when the intellect gets absorbed into the One Mind. Yet, it is not until the will gets united to the One Body do we begin to feel divine. This experience is like a Samadhi realization when all sense of time and space gets removed from our memory as we unite as One. The entire process is humankind’s destiny as the Age of Aquarius comes into being. We are all transformed while we sleep, and everyone both good and evil get purified as a result. Innocence gets restored to the affection of love, and the world begins to reflect the spiritual plane resulting in peace on earth, as the oneness of the Divine Human.

Book excerpt: Christians generally believe that in prayer they are free in their act to petition God. Christians also believe that they pray to a God that is sovereign and omniscient. Kyle DiRoberts maintains that explanation as to how one affirms these two truths is dependent upon one's account of divine providence, which determines how motivated the person is to offer petitionary prayer in the divine-human relationship. The theories of providence and their understanding of petitionary prayer discussed in this book include: compatibilism, hard determinism, open theism, and middle knowledge. Each of the theories of divine providence discussed in this book share a desire to construct a view concerning petitionary prayer that would propel the Christian toward God in relationship and then lead the body of Christ to pray without ceasing. DiRoberts argues that middle knowledge is the preferred theory of providence as it relates to petitionary prayer, because for middle knowledge, God's sovereignty includes both his omniscience and libertarian human freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume of collected essays, written over the last two decades and all revised, updated, and supplemented with unpublished material, are grouped around two themes: Divine Secrets and Human Imaginations. The first essays deal with the production, initiation, use and function, the abduction, repatriation, and the replacement of divine images, their outer appearance, and the many facets of the divine presence theology in Ancient Mesopotamia. The essays on the second topic deal with human imaginations, human constructs, and constructed memories, which assign meaning to the past or to things or experiences that are beyond human control. Thematically, several aspects of the human condition are examined, such as the ideas associated in the Old Testament and the Ancient Near East with death, corporeality, enemies, disasters, utopias, and passionate love.
