Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their discovery in 1869, the dictyostelids have attracted the attention of scientists in a wide variety of fields. This interest has stemmed from their peculiar lifestyle and developmental properties, which were shaped by the evolutionary forces that generated multicellularity during eukaryotic evolution. More recently, the dictyostelids have gained attention due to the striking similarities found at the genomic, cellular and biochemical levels with human cells, which has propelled the species Dictyostelium discoideum to become a model system for biology and medicine in many laboratories. This book covers the latest advances in our knowledge of these extraordinary organisms with topics spanning from their evolutionary history, ecology and diversity to the recent discoveries regarding their cellular and molecular biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Bonner has rewritten more than half of this standard treatise to take account of the great amount of recent research on the cellular slime molds. He has included a larger selection of material, more figures and new plates. The bibliography has been greatly enlarged. Originally published in 1967. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity, Taxonomy and Feeding Preferences of Cellular Slime Molds (dictyostelids) from the Main Island of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines by : Paul Richard Jesena Yulo
Download or read book Biodiversity, Taxonomy and Feeding Preferences of Cellular Slime Molds (dictyostelids) from the Main Island of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines written by Paul Richard Jesena Yulo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular slime molds (dictyostelids) are single-called phagotrophic micropredators that consume bacteria. They are common inhabitants of soil microbial communities and are most abundant in forest soils. This study from coastal and mountain forests in the Island of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro during the dry and wet seasons. A total of eight species belonging to two genera were isolated, namely, Dictyostelium aureostipes, D. discoideum, D. laterosorum, D. mucoroides, D. purpureum, Dictyostelium sp., Polysphondylium and P. violaceum. It was observed that the percent yield of cellular slime molds increased significantly from the dry to the wet season. The clonal count of the isolated dictyostelids also showed a significant increase in the number of dictyostelids between the coastal and mountain forests, where more were seen in coastal forests. A distinct increase in biodiversity of cellular slime molds was also observed between the dry and wet seasons. A computations of the Simpson's Index of Diversity, coefficient of community (CC) and percent similarity (PS), and interpretation of cluster analysis results likewise supported this observation. Investigation on the feeding preferences of the isolated dictyostelids showed that among yeasts and gram negative and gram-positive bacteria, cellular slime molds are able to grow best on gram-negative bacteria, particularly E. coli.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity of Fungi by : Mercedes S. Foster
Download or read book Biodiversity of Fungi written by Mercedes S. Foster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity of Fungi is essential for anyone collecting and/or monitoring any fungi. Fascinating and beautiful, fungi are vital components of nearly all ecosystems and impact human health and our economy in a myriad of ways. Standardized methods for documenting diversity and distribution have been lacking. A wealth of information, especially regrading sampling protocols, compiled by an international team of fungal biologists, make Biodiversity of Fungi an incredible and fundamental resource for the study of organismal biodiversity. Chapters cover everything from what is a fungus, to maintaining and organizing a permanent study collection with associated databases; from protocols for sampling slime molds to insect associated fungi; from fungi growing on and in animals and plants to mushrooms and truffles. The chapters are arranged both ecologically and by sampling method rather than by taxonomic group for ease of use. The information presented here is intended for everyone interested in fungi, anyone who needs tools to study them in nature including naturalists, land managers, ecologists, mycologists, and even citizen scientists and sophiscated amateurs. Covers all groups of fungi - from molds to mushrooms, even slime molds Describes sampling protocols for many groups of fungi Arranged by sampling method and ecology to coincide with users needs Beautifully illustrated to document the range of fungi treated and techniques discussed Natural history data are provided for each group of fungi to enable users to modify suggested protocols to meet their needs

Book Synopsis Protist Diversity and Geographical Distribution by : W. Foissner
Download or read book Protist Diversity and Geographical Distribution written by W. Foissner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-24 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation and biodiversity of protists The conservation of biodiversity is not just an issue of plants and vertebrates. It is the scarcely visible invertebrates and myriads of other microscopic organisms that are crucial to the maintenance of ecological processes on which all larger organisms and the composition of the atmosphere ultimately depend. Biodiversity and Conservation endeavours to take an holistic view of biodiversity, and when the opportunity arises to issue collections of papers dealing with too-often neglected groups of organisms. The protists, essentially eukaryotes that cannot be classi?ed in the kingdoms of animals, fungi, or plants, include some of the lea- known groups of organisms on earth. They are generally treated as a separate kingdom, commonly named Protista (or Protoctista) in textbooks, but in reality they are a mixture of organisms with disparate a?nities. Some authors have hypothesized that the numbers of protists are not especially large, and that many have extraordinarily wide distributions. However, the p- ture that unfolds from the latest studies discussed in this issue is di?erent. There are many species with wide ranges, and proportionately more cosmopolitan species than in macroorganism groups, as a result of their long evolutionary histories, but there are also de?nite patterns and geographical restrictions to be found. Further, some protists are linked to host organisms as mutualists or parasites and necessarily con?ned to the distributions of their hosts.
