Antony (Khrapovitsky) “The Dogma of Atonement” We have divided the entire contents of this study into three parts. In the first of these, we talk about the denial by Metr. Antony of the legal view of the atonement and cite the revealed and patristic evidence to refute this denial. The subject of the second part is the presentation of the doctrine of Metr. Antony about the atonement of us with the compassionate love of Christ, His spiritual Gethsemane torment. This teaching is also overturned by the scriptures and the works of the Holy Fathers of the Church. Finally, in order to maximally capture the hearts of the readers of our book of the Orthodox doctrine of the atonement, we give a brief summary of it on the basis of Divine Revelation, patristic teachings, and liturgical books, which is the third part of this study.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html I was invited to expound the ideology of the Russian Christian Labor Movement at the Council of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad, which was held in December 1937, chaired by His Eminence Metropolitan Anastasius. I complied. (My report on Russian ideology was heard at the Council of Bishops in August 1938. The conclusions of the report were adopted by the Council, and in accordance with this a council decree was issued. In addition, at the 1938 Council of Russian Bishops with the participation of the laity, some of the laity - members of the Council, representatives from dioceses in Yugoslavia and Western Europe, asked me to give them information about Russian ideology and, in particular, the justification of the tsarist autocratic power.) This prompted me to engage in clarification of the real issue, vital and so close to the hearts of Russian people, the fruit of which was my book: “Russian Ideology”. The first chapter of this book indicates that Russian ideology consists in the Orthodox faith and the life of a Russian person based on it in all its manifestations. This faith was assimilated by the Russian people from the time of baptism of Himself, as the main rule of life, which is evidenced by the fact that the most beloved books for reading Russian people, in addition to the book of life – the Bible – were the Lives of the Saints (The Minions of Minea). But especially the vitality of this faith was testified to by the holy monastic life in monasteries and the pious life of the laity, as evidenced by the countless churches in Russia and the church life of our ancestors, to whom they openly professed their faith - their great prayerful deeds both in churches and at home, their sincere deep repentance of sins and the purity of their Orthodox faith. The same chapter notes the marvelous protection and intercession that the Lord showed the Russian people for their devotion to the Orthodox faith and the desire for holiness, which is the same for life that is consistent with this faith. The second chapter of our book depicts another - the sad side of the life of the Russian people - their retreat from the Orthodox faith and, above all, through the assimilation of Protestantism. It is shown here that this retreat did not happen immediately, but gradually, starting with John III , from the time the Germans entered the Russian service. But especially devastating for Russia was the retreat from the Orthodox faith under Peter the Great. This misfortune was facilitated by his anti-church reforms, which brought about the breaking of the Orthodox faith itself. Particularly detrimental were the reforms in relation to monasteries with the selection of monastic and generally church property. As a result of this, the monasteries have lost their great significance as church educational centers in the life of the Russian people. Education and enlightenment were taken away from the Church and passed into the hands of the state and began to be conducted along the line of withdrawal from the Church and Her saving influence. To the retreat of the Russian people from the Orthodox faith was directed and personal behavior of Peter. Russia is a salvific ark, keeping afloat before the eyes of the mankind drowning in sin. What awaits Russia (our Motherland) in the apostatic world, what idea will unite the nation and who will lead this union? The works of the remarkable Russian hierarch - Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev ; 1881-1950) "Russian Ideology" and "On the true monarchical world outlook" are devoted to the answers to these difficult questions . The Russian saint and theologian is deeply revered in the Slavic world not only as a man of deep intelligence and extensive knowledge, but also as a righteous man and seer, through whose prayers hundreds of miracles have been performed and are still being performed.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html In recent years, when it became possible to send books to Russia, some publishing houses, between their other publications, sent there many works of a religious and philosophical direction. Between them were the works of Archpriest Sergiy Bulgakov, which contained his special heretical teaching on Sofia and on “sophistry”. Since the Russian reader is not sophisticated in these matters, and many are embarrassed by this doctrine, which is clearly not in accordance with the church doctrine, in this regard requests come from there to give a correct explanation of this direction. Therefore, our publishing house has taken steps to reprint a thorough work on this issue of Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev) - "The New Doctrine of Sophia the Wisdom of God." In this work, His Grace Archbishop Seraphim skillfully and convincingly exposes the teachings of Archpriest S. Bulgakov about Sophia, the Wisdom of God. The author shows in an exhaustive manner that the sophiology of Archpriest Sergius Bulgakov is not consistent with the Orthodox tradition. This is his teaching, of course, in a rougher, currently unacceptable form, characteristic of almost all Gnostic sects, starting from the first centuries of Christianity. Through the Kabbalistic-occult tradition and further through the Rosicrucians in the genus Jacob Boehme, and through the Freemasons, whose writings became widespread in Russia at the end of the 18th century, these Gnostic tendencies also spread to Russia. In the future, this direction was resumed in the writings of V.S. Solovyov and prot. Pavel Florensky. Therefore now, when they try to spread this false doctrine of neo-Gnosticism among the inexperienced Russian reader, by sending books Archpriest S. Bulgakov or by printing the works of prot. Pavel Florensky, we believe that the work of Archbishop Seraphim is very necessary, and will help many understand this anti-church direction, to which the writings of the mentioned philosopher writers lead.

Book excerpt: Pp. 351-399, "The Jewish Question", deal with Solovyov's position vis-a-vis problems related to the presence of Jews in Russia, in particular his attitudes toward Judaism, the discussion on the rights of Jews in the Empire, and antisemitism. As a person who knew Hebrew and read the Jewish Scriptures and Talmud, thus being a specialist in Judaism unique in Russia at the time, Solovyov struggled against reductionist and pejorative views on Jews and Judaism, and defended the Talmud against slander by Rohling and other anti-Jewish scholars. Solovyov regarded the Jews as the key to the future world-unifying theocracy that he visualized. Although he shared some anti-Jewish cliches, Solovyov maintained that conflict with Jews resulted from a misunderstanding of their social role in Russia, and he was committed to improvement of their conditions. He claimed that the roots of the "Jewish question" lay in the Christian rather than the Jewish way of life and values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the various kinds of occultism popular during the Russian Silver Age (1890-1914), modern Theosophy was by far the most intellectually significant. This contemporary gnostic gospel was invented and disseminated by Helena Blavatsky, an expatriate Russian with an enthusiasm for Buddhist thought and a genius for self-promotion. What distinguished Theosophy from the other kinds of "mysticism"—the spiritualism, table turning, fortune-telling, and magic—that fascinated the Russian intelligentsia of the period? In answering this question, Maria Carlson offers the first scholarly study of a controversial but important movement in its Russian context. Carlson's is the only work on this topic written by an intellectual historian not ideologically committed to Theosophy. Placing Mme Blavatsky and her "secret doctrine" in a Russian setting, the book also discusses independent Russian Theosophical circles and the impact of the Theosophical-Anthroposophical schism in Russia. It surveys the vigorous polemics of the Theosophists and their critics, demonstrates Theosophy's role in the philosophical dialogues of the Russian creative intelligentsia, and chronicles the demise of the movement after 1917. By exploring this long neglected aspect of the Silver Age, Carlson greatly enriches our knowledge of fin-de-sicle Russian culture. Originally published in 1993. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a cultural history of mathematics and art, from antiquity to the present. Mathematicians and artists have long been on a quest to understand the physical world they see before them and the abstract objects they know by thought alone. Taking readers on a tour of the practice of mathematics and the philosophical ideas that drive the discipline, Lynn Gamwell points out the important ways mathematical concepts have been expressed by artists. Sumptuous illustrations of artworks and cogent math diagrams are featured in Gamwell's comprehensive exploration. Gamwell begins by describing mathematics from antiquity to the Enlightenment, including Greek, Islamic, and Asian mathematics. Then focusing on modern culture, Gamwell traces mathematicians' search for the foundations of their science, such as David Hilbert's conception of mathematics as an arrangement of meaning-free signs, as well as artists' search for the essence of their craft, such as Aleksandr Rodchenko's monochrome paintings. She shows that self-reflection is inherent to the practice of both modern mathematics and art, and that this introspection points to a deep resonance between the two fields: Kurt Gödel posed questions about the nature of mathematics in the language of mathematics and Jasper Johns asked "What is art?" in the vocabulary of art. Throughout, Gamwell describes the personalities and cultural environments of a multitude of mathematicians and artists, from Gottlob Frege and Benoît Mandelbrot to Max Bill and Xu Bing. Mathematics and Art demonstrates how mathematical ideas are embodied in the visual arts and will enlighten all who are interested in the complex intellectual pursuits, personalities, and cultural settings that connect these vast disciplines.

It has functioned as an absolute marker of difference from what is considered to be the essence of Orthodoxy and, thus, ironically has become a constitutive aspect of the modern Orthodox self. The essays collected in this volume examine the many factors that contributed to the “Eastern” construction of the “West” in order to understand why the “West” is so important to the Eastern Christian’s sense of self.
