Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Nose and Its Accessory Sinuses In 1899 I was awarded the Jacksonian Prize for an Essay on "The Pathology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of the Inflammatory Affections of the Nose and its Accessory Sinuses and Air-cells." Some of the investigations for that work have been continued and amplified, the whole Essay has been thoroughly revised, and additional chapters have been added in the endeavour to make the present book a complete treatise on the Diseases of the Nose. It has been my aim to give a concise yet full account of the Diseases of the Nose and its Accessory Sinuses, more especially with reference to their Pathology and Treatment, and I trust that what I have written may be of service to those Practitioners and Senior Students who intend to devote special study to this subject. The chapters have not all been written upon a uniform plan. A systematic account has been given of subjects upon which there has been no recent controversy, and upon which no great divergence of opinion exists. On the other hand, I have not hesitated to devote considerable space to the consideration of doubtful points, and, whilst indicating my own views, I trust I have stated fairly the opinions of others. To increase the usefulness of the work, I have added at the end of each chapter a short bibliography, containing references to the more important recent contributions to the subject. Every endeavour has been made to keep this list as short as possible, and to include in it nothing but what the student who seeks fuller knowledge or more details upon any particular point may consult with advantage. Minor references are given as footnotes. To ensure greater accuracy, all the references have been carefully verified by Mr. Archibald Clarke. I must here acknowledge my great indebtedness to the following works, which have been frequently alluded to in the text: Morell Mackenzie, Diseases of the Throat and Nose. Vol. ii. London. 1884. Spencer Watson, Diseases of the Nose. 2nd Edit. London. 1890. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhinology: A Text Book of Diseases of the Nose and the Nasal Accessory Sinuses The author's endeavour has been to present concisely the science as well as the practice of rhinology, since practice which is not founded on scientific principles becomes empirical, and the practitioner lacks the knowledge which alone can guide him through the maze of ever new operations and methods of treatment inevitable in any relatively young and rapidly developing branch of medical art. To fulfil conditions essential to an ideal text book, dogmatic statements are restricted to well-ascertained facts, while on debatable ground the opinions of the chief authorities on diseases of the nose are stated, as far as possible. In the limited space, in order that the student may be guided to intelligent choice of alternatives in practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Nose and Its Accessory Cavities The present work was undertaken with the hope, that by condensing and systematising the vast mass of material, including original and quoted cases, new facts and observations, new remedies, descriptions and classifications of disease, all relating to the subject of affections of the Nose, a certain void in Medical Literature might be filled up, and a ready means of reference afforded to the busy medical practitioner. In systematic works on General Surgery and Medicine these various novelties are, as a rule, only lightly touched on, in consequence of other more important or more interesting matter claiming the space that would otherwise have been allotted to them. The only articles in the English language on the subject of Diseases of the Nose are those in Mr. Timothy Holmes' "System of Surgery," viz., one by the late Mr. Ure, in the first edition, and that by Mr. Durham, in the more recent editions. These articles, though most valuable and interesting in themselves, can only deal with the subject in a very brief and partial manner, and, from the necessary limitation of space, unavoidably omit much that may fairly find a place in a work devoted to the more limited field of Medical Science forming the subject of this Treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Nose and Its Accessory Cavities The method of describing the different diseases pre sents little difference from that usually adopted. The volume opens with an inquiry into the physiology of the nose, only recently investigated: this has appeared to be of considerable importance, seeing that it has changed the whole aspect of the aetiology and treat ment of nose-disease. More space than is perhaps usual has been devoted to the subject of prognosis, the author having attempted to indicate precisely what degree of benefit may be expected from any given line of treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Diseases of the Nose and Throat The author desires again to thank the many friends whose kindly interest in this work has brought the opportunity of another revision. Each article has been carefully considered, and changes made to conform to the advances in diagnosis and treatment. Chapter VII., on Diseases of the Accessory Sinus, has been entirely rewritten and many new cuts added, which, it is hoped, will elucidate this interesting part of the subject. It may not be amiss to point out that the purpose of this work, in its successive editions, has been to provide a compact manual answering the needs of both students and practitioners. Special attention has, therefore, been devoted to the more practical sections - namely, those on Examinations, Diagnosis, and Treatment. It is of the first. Importance that the appearances found on examina tion of a patient Should be thoroughly appreciated, and that microscopical and bacteriological investigations should be made where the nature of the morbid process is in doubt. Sufficient guidance in these directions will be found in the Work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Diseases of the Sinuses: A Comprehensive Textbook of Diagnosis and Treatment, 2nd Edition, offers the definitive source of information about the basic science of the sinuses and the clinical approach to sinusitis. Since the widely praised publication of the first edition, understanding of sinus disease has changed dramatically, mainly as a result of recent developments and new discoveries in the field of immunology. This updated and expanded edition is divided into sections addressing, separately, the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, medical and surgical management of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis. Special entities such as autoimmune-related sinusitis, allergy and sinusitis, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease are discussed in separate chapters. The role of immunodeficiency is also addressed. The management section has been fully updated to incorporate new medical modalities and surgical procedures. Developed by a distinguished group of international experts who share their expertise and insights from years of collective experience in treating sinus diseases, the book will appeal to anyone who has an interest in sinus disease, including both physicians and allied health professionals. Internists, pediatricians, allergists, otolaryngologists and infectious disease specialists will find the book to be an invaluable, comprehensive reference. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners who work with specialists who treat sinus disease will also benefit from the book.
