Book Synopsis Late Victorian Holocausts by : Mike Davis
Download or read book Late Victorian Holocausts written by Mike Davis and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a series of El NiƱo-induced droughts and the famines that they spawned around the globe in the last third of the 19th century, Mike Davis discloses the intimate, baleful relationship between imperial arrogance and natural incident that combined to produce some of the worst tragedies in human history. Late Victorian Holocausts focuses on three zones of drought and subsequent famine: India, Northern China; and Northeastern Brazil. All were affected by the same global climatic factors that caused massive crop failures, and all experienced brutal famines that decimated local populations. But the effects of drought were magnified in each case because of singularly destructive policies promulgated by different ruling elites. Davis argues that the seeds of underdevelopment in what later became known as the Third World were sown in this era of High Imperialism, as the price for capitalist modernization was paid in the currency of millions of peasants' lives.

Download or read book Famine written by John R.K. Robson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Famine (1981), a collection of essays by experts from the developing world and advanced agricultural societies, the authors share their ecological perspectives and provide an insight into the multiple causes of famine. They examine the fact that the main cause of famine is more likely to be as a result of human actions, rather than the vagaries of climate, and look at whether planned intervention by governments and relief agencies may compound the problems already existing.

Download or read book Famine Demography written by Tim Dyson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the important subject of famine demography. It describes case studies of the demography of historical and more recent famines in locations as far apart as Ireland, Finland, India, Burundi, Russia, Greece, Madagascar, and Japan. The authors concern themselves with significant issues such as the role of famines in controlling population growth in the past, the nature of interactions between starvation and epidemic diseases during times of famine, and the detailed demographic consequences of famines. In the latter category issues such as the age and cause-specific profiles of excess famine mortality receive particular attention. This is the only comparative volume of its kind. It is wide-ranging in time and place, but at the same time focuses sharply on a particular subject. Consequently its contents provide a unique understanding of famine demography.
