Research on this topic has been spread throughout scientific journals on psychology, behavioral health, psychoneuroimmunology, oncology, and epidemiology. Personality and Disease brings this research together in one place for the first time. With contributions from world experts, the book summarizes research findings on personality as it relates to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and allergies, dementia, and more. Is there such a thing as a cancer- prone personality? Do sadness, anger, stress, or shyness affect the likelihood that we will fall ill to specific diseases? Can we protect ourselves from disease through a positive outlook? This book will address both what we know, and what we persist in believing despite evidence to the contrary, and why such beliefs persist in the face of evidence. Investigates whether and how personality affects disease generally Includes cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, allergies, and dementia Separates fact from fiction, evidence from beliefs Collates research from a wide variety of scientific domains Contains international perspectives from top scholars

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By '' person " in psychological language we under- stand generally the individual, as clearly conscious of itself, and acting accordingly : it is the highest form of individuality. To explain this attribute, which it reserves exclusively for man, metaphysical psychology is satisfied with the hypothesis of an ego, absolutely one, simple, and identical. Unfortunately, however, this is only illusive clearness and a semblance of solu- tion. Unless we attribute to this ego a supernatural origin, it will be necessary to explain how it is born, and from what lower form it proceeds. Accordingly, experimental psychology must propound the problem differently, and treat it by different methods. Experi- mental psychology learns from natural scientists that in the majority of cases it is difficult even to establish the characteristics of individuality, which are far less complex than those of personality. Hence it mistrusts simple solutions, and, far from regarding the question as solved at the outset, it looks for the solution at the close of its researches, as the result of long and labor- ious investigations. Therefore, it is but natural that the representatives of the old school, slightly be- wildered at the situation, should accuse the adherents

Book excerpt: Rather than arguing for one best approach for treating personality disorder, this pragmatic book emphasizes the benefits of weaving together multiple well-established intervention strategies to meet each patient's needs. A framework is provided for constructing a comprehensive case formulation, planning treatment, and developing a strong therapeutic alliance. The clinician is guided to utilize techniques from all major therapeutic orientations to address transdiagnostic personality symptoms and problems involving emotion regulation, interpersonal functioning, and self and identity. Showing how to pick and choose from "what works" in a thoughtful, coordinated fashion, the book features rich clinical illustrations, including a chapter-length case example. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the assumption that there is a significant connection between normal psychological and biological differences and the development of psychological disorders has grown and research in this area has developed rapidly. This textbook, written by internationally known psychologists with expertise in both the areas of abnormal and differential psychology, aims to integrate evidence and idea from healthy personality and temperament on the one hand and psychological disorders on the other. This is achieved by viewing personality traits as predispositions to disorder, and by questioning how far the causes of various disorders can be seen as an extension or exaggeration of processes underlying normal personality or temperament. These main themes are discussed using a biological perspective, i.e., based on the theory that personality can be deconstructed into a number of basic dimensions (of biological origin) that also act as vulnerability factors for disorder. This is a second-level textbook for undergraduate students of psychology, but will also be recommended for health professionals and their trainees, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and nurses.
