Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sinner's Friend, or the Disease of Sin, Its Consequences, and the Remedy Before those who fall into these mistaken notions can be'brought into the fold of Christ, their error must be exposed, and the light permitted to shine into their hearts. They must understand What sin is, and realize deeply that it is an evil and a bitter thing, before they can rightly discern the way of salvation, and feel the importance of a change of heart. The disease must be known, before the remedy can be applied or appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Disease and Remedy of Sin One of our most pressing needs to-day is that of making religion more vital in the common experience of men. It is too often regarded either as a mere luxury, expensive and unnecessary; or as a burden, painful to carry, difficult to endure. Its doctrines seem remote from the lives of men, and its rites empty and often wearisome. God is only "the residue" of life, and it is a residue men are more and more being tempted to grudge. It is the aim of these pages to show that true religion, so far from being apart from real life, is the very essence of it; that its truths are the laws of Spiritual Health, and that, far from being a dispensable luxury, they are more necessary than the bread we eat or the air we breathe. With this end, the various experiences of the soul in health and disease have been examined from a medical point of view. The volume therefore may be described as an Essay in the Psychology of Sin and Salvation from a medicinal standpoint. Christianity is everywhere regarded as the care and cure of spiritual disease. The prevalent category of thought is "spiritual health": the commanding goal is "eternal life." How far the author has succeeded in carrying out his method it is for others to judge. Truth is not a mere statement of words, it is the consciously perceived activity of God's love and wisdom in the plane of the human mind. We advance, therefore, by the affirmation, yea, yea, of good and the negation, nay, nay, ' of evil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart Disease, Rheumatism, Dispepsia, &C: Their Cure IN common with all medical students, my early teachings were that diseases of the heart were utterly incurable; that there was no remedy for them, and that the unfortunate sufl'erers had no refuge but in death. Early in my practice I was consulted in many such cases, and I could ofl'er neither remedies, consolation, nor hope of cure. At length these distressing instances forced themselves so frequently upon my notice that I was led to make the inquiry, Were the principles of medicine at fault, and so much at fault, that they could not be successfully applied to the treatment of dis ease of the heart? Was Medicine a myth? And were medical remedies so powerless that, when such an organ as the heart became diseased, there were none to be found adapted to its cure? I could not content myself with the affirmative answer. I believed that Medicine was not a fallacy, but, on the contrary, a great and sub lime truth, and that no disease probably existed for which there were not adequate remedies. I knew that fatal mechanical obstruc tions might exist, but I believed that disease, properly so denomi Dated, must be within the reach of remedies. Book excerpt: Here, at long last, is an unbiased look at alternative medicine by a distinguished and experienced clinician with an open mind. Ignoring the name-calling and turf wars among various health care factions, Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, a professor of clinical medicine and author of several bestselling books (including Doctor, What Should I Eat? and The Best Treatment), turns his erudition to examining the field of alternative medicine. Based on in-depth research, and written with his trademark wit and candor, Dr. Rosenfeld reviews the track records of dozens of the most widely-used alternative therapies. He discusses such diverse approaches as hypnosis, acupuncture, chelation, homeopathy, reflexology, aromatherapy, applied kinesiology, hydrotherapy, oxygen therapy, fasting, Ayurvedic medicine, use of medicinal herbs, craniosacral therapy -- and more. For each approach, Dr. Rosenfeld describes how it is used, the theories on which it is based, how much scientific evidence exists to support claims for it, and, most important for the health consumer, whether it actually works. Dr. Rosenfeld calls it as it is, including a delicious description of how to tell a quack from a legitimate practitioner. This is an eye-opening and entertaining approach to a controversial subject of vital interest to everyone. You will find many surprises in these pages. Read the excerpt for just some of the ways alternative medicine can and cannot work for you.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symptoms and Treatment of All Diseases The best physicians at present, consider Feyer a disease of the whole system: and seem to have but little confidence, in any theory that has been suggest ed respecting its nature. There is, however, a gem eral belief, that the reaction of the heart and arteries, is an effort of nature to throw off. Disease, but they think the attempt to ascertain the first link in the chain of diseased act1on, is vain. The inference drawn by the Thomsonians, from this theory, is, that Feve and inflammation are friends, and should be treated as such; but they are such fuénds as often destroy life, by their too Violent efforts to restore. It would be rash to say that they never can be; yet, granting that those places are practically unfathomable - that it is not worth while to spend any more time in trying to sound them - is there not still a great deal that can be learned concerning this lake by careful observation and diligent study IS it not best for people who are to live on its shore, and sometimes to row and sail over its surface, to become as intelligent concerning it as they can? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Treatment of Cancer As the journalistic reviews of my sec ond little book have been so encouraging I venture to put forth another, a third acorn, in the hopes that it may excite further interest in this most important subject, and lead others to investigate the matter and to report their experience and cases along the lines indicated. I should also be glad of just criticisms on a sci entific basis. It is not a little remarkable that during the past year or so there has been such a Singular dearth of surgical articles on cancer, as a careful search of literature shows, and so many journal articles, editorial and other, looking toward the thoughts on cancer which I have endeavored to present. It is sin cerely to be hoped that this ratio will in crease more and more, and we shall soon see a radical diminution in the death rate of cancer, which is so longed for by all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spiritual Clinique: Four Bible Readings Given at Keswick Those upon whom falls the somewhat unenviable responsibility of teaching on the Keswick platform and at similar gatherings, frequently come into contact with persons who have been for years much oppressed and troubled with some chronic form of spiritual ailment. The ordinary teaching in Conventions does not always reach those serious cases of spiritual disease. They have to be dealt with individually, sometimes with very specific treatment. I have personally come into such frequent contact with this class of cases, that it occurred to me, and I believe was laid upon me by the Holy Spirit, to conduct during four consecutive morning meetings at the Keswick of 1907, a kind of spiritual clinique, selecting four of the most desperate sorts of spiritual difficulty, and seeking to show how the Master Physician, in the Word of God, treats these chronic ailments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ought to Be's There is no mystery about the matter. Habitual mortal sin has filled the world with stray sheep. This is a fact as old as Christianity. It needs no proof. In diagnosing a disease and prescribing a remedy, it is necessary to go to the root of the evil. The root of almost all the defection from the Church is simply and plainly sin, and that species of sin whose wages are eternal death. There are sheep astray from the fold because they will not hear the voice of the Great Shepherd of Souls. There are recreant children who will not obey and keep His commandments. There are the weak, who have become discouraged long ago, and who feel that it is useless for them to strive after righteousness weighted down as they are with the burden of sinful inclinations and vicious habits. There are those who have grown old in evil ways, who appear as if aband oned to a reprobate sense, and who deem it too late to retrace their steps and begin their spiritual lives anew. These there are and a thousand other forms of the same spiritual malady, having as their root the ancient spirit of rebellion on the part of the intelligent creature against the Creator, who gave it being and intelligence and made it free. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Eden to Glory, or Footsteps of Mercy It is worthy Of notice that there is no extended rev elation given in the Word Of the entrance of sin, while the way to escape from it, and from its consequences, is made the main subject of the Scriptures. It might gratify our curiosity to be informed as to the communications which man, when In a state of in nocence, had with God to know how Often the angels came down to him, and What manner Of conversation they had; and to be made acquainted with all the ways by which Satan undertook to deceive him; but since we know that Sin does exist, and that the remedy for it is provided, instead of speculating upon its origin the great practical question that Should chiefly engage our attention Is, How can we get rid of it? How be re deemed from its guilt and power? This problem is solved for usf God indicated His interest in man's happiness by sending a Saviour, by Hsis providential dispensations, and by the institutions of His grace, through which, as means, man may be rescued.
