Book excerpt: The Great Lakes consist of Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, and are the world's greatest concentration, more than 20 percent, of fresh water. In geologic terms they are only about ten thousand years old, formed during the last ice age. Appreciating their history has taken on additional importance as foreign marine life has threatened their unique fishing resources, and pollution has intruded on their purity. The National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio, presents a comprehensive view of the region. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society maintains historical sites and has identified more than 8,000 shipwreck sites in the lakes, a unique collection of historical evidence through the centuries. Sara Stafford (1853-1927) was active in the Thunder Bay Historical Society and also wrote The Keeper of the Gate, or the Sleeping Giant of Lake Superior, and Port Arthur in Ye Olden Time, in which she related that in the winter the mail came by dog sled over the ice from Duluth and that "We considered that the news was up to date and not old if the papers received were not more than twenty days old."

His right arm became Lake Michigan and his right leg Lake Huron, after the frowsy-haired Hurons. His left leg became Georgian Bay, while his right foot was named Lake Erie. And his left foot he came Lake Ontario. Still angry at the God of Water. Nanna-bijou came up to Port Arthur, and here. Wading out nineteen miles, he became tired and lay down to sleep. On awakening he found he had formed the Thunder Cape, with the trees growing out of his mouth and chin, and has ever since been called The Sleeping Giant. Then nanna-bijou began to feel lonely, and thought he would go and find his people. And having one green stone left, of which he made Isle Royale. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What attracted 19th century travelers to the rugged landscape of Michigan's Upper Peninsula? Most travelers had to brave the frigid, gigantic, and the often-perilous Lake Superior to gain entrance to the Upper Peninsula. But although the lake and rugged terrain often made it difficult for travelers to traverse the Upper Peninsula, it also often made travel an adventurous and enjoyable occasion. Lake Superior Country: 19th Century Travel and Tourism to Michigan's Upper Peninsula will follow these 19th century travelers, from the explorers in search of land titles and valuable mineral deposits in the early part of the century, to "literary travelers" seeking to witness the romantic region made famous by Henry W. Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha," to the sportsmen and sportswomen who found a bounty of wildlife and fishing grounds. It will also illustrate the various methods of travel undertaken by these people, from birch bark canoes, to steamers, to the railroads, and how these different methods of travel defined the overall tourist experience.

Book excerpt: Discovery of the sources of the Mississippi River : Summary Narrative of an Exploratory Expedition to the Sources of the Mississippi River in 1820. Discovery of the sources of the Mississippi River : Summary Narrative of an Exploratory Expedition to the Sources of the Mississippi River in 1820. Resumed and Completed, by the Discovery of its Origin in Itasca Lake, in 1832 The following pages embrace the substance of the narratives of two distinct expeditions for the discovery of the sources of the Mississippi River, under the authority of the United States. By connecting the incidents of discovery, and of the facts brought to light during a period of twelve years, unity is preserved in the prosecution of an object of considerable importance in the progress of our geography and natural history, at least, from the new impulse which they received after the treaty of Ghent. Geographers deem that branch of a river as its true source which originates at the remotest distance from its mouth, and, agreeably to this definition, the combined narratives, to which attention is now called, show this celebrated stream to arise in Itasca Lake, the source of the Itasca River. Owing to the time which has intervened since these expeditions were undertaken, a mere revision of the prior narrations, in the journal form, was deemed inexpedient. A concise summary has, therefore, been made, preserving whatever information it was thought important to be known or remembered, and omitting all matters not partaking of permanent interest.
