Book Synopsis Return to Laughter by : Elenore Smith Bowen
Download or read book Return to Laughter written by Elenore Smith Bowen and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic of anthropological literature is a dramatic, revealing account of an anthropologist’s first year in the field with a remote African tribe. Simply as a work of ethnographic interest, Return to Laughter provides deep insights into the culture of West Africa—me subtle web of its tribal life and the power of the institution of witchcraft. However, the author’s fictional approach gives the book its lasting appeal. She focuses on the human dimension of anthropology, recounting her personal triumphs and failures and documenting the profound changes she undergoes. As a result, her story becomes at once highly personal and universally recognizable. She has vividly brought to life the classic narrative of an outsider caught up and deeply involved in an utterly alien culture. “The first introspective account ever published of what it’s like to be a field worker among a primitive people.”—Margaret Mead

Download or read book Acabou written by Tim Green and published by Covos Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acabou started as a journal Tim Green kept for himself during his imprisonment in Mozambique. Scribbled with the stub of a pencil on a children's notebook, smuggled into the cell by inmates, the notes were intended as letters to his family should he not survive. On his release the notes were turned into a full length gripping story. It tells of how he was working as a commercial pilot, flying communications equipment to Mozambique. On completion of this job he was paid in American dollars, which he tried to exchange for local currency to pay for a meal. The currency was allegedly counterfeit and he was imprisoned for trying to ruin the Mozambican economy. He tells of how he was marched in front of a firing squad and almost put to death and how it was the inmates, rallying around him and his wife's pressure on the South African government that saved his life.

Download or read book Tonga Religious Life in the Twentieth Century written by Elizabeth Colson and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2006 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious life of the Tonga-speaking peoples of southern Zambia is examined over the last century, in the sense of how they have thought about the nature of their world, the meaning of their own lives, and the sources of good and evil in which their cosmology and society have been transformed. The twelve chapters cover Time, Space and Language; Basic Themes, Tonga Religious Vocabulary and its Referents; the Vocabulary of Shrines and Substance; Homestead and Bush; Ritual Communities and Actors; Rituals of the Life Course; Death and its Rituals; Evil and Witchcraft; and Christianity and Tonga Experience. The author has drawn on dairies by research assistants, and field notes and research of fellow anthropologists, but above all from her own interaction with Tonga people since 1946. The older people gave first hand memories of Ndebele and Lozi raids, David Linvingstone encamped near their villages in 1856 and 1862, the arrival of colonial administrators, traders, missionaries and European and Indian settlers, and in some cases, the end of colonial rule. Their experience and that of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren provides the basis for understanding Tonga religious experience. Elizabeth Colson is an American anthropologist who is widely published on the Tonga. Her research interests have particularly concentrated on the Gwembe Valley.
