Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Lessons: A Demonstration of the Direct Method in Elementary Teaching The visit of Director Walter to this country is due to the invitation extended to him by the Trus tees of Teachers College, Columbia University. His recognized position as one of the foremost expo neuts of the Reform-method in modern language teaching made it desirable that he should find an Opportunity to illustrate his theories in practice, and the accompanying lessons accurately recorded by Miss Ballard are a faithful transcript of eighteen lessons, sixteen of which were given by him to a group of children previously unacquainted with French. The value of lessons recorded with the most nu compromising fidelity has been recognized for some time by the Secondary Education Department of Teachers College, and a series of Stenographic Reports on lessons of various types, and in various subjects, published by Teachers College in 1910, has afforded abundant food for thought and study to practical teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Method Of Teaching The French Language By the method of translation, used in nearly all tue schools, it has been only too well proved that, after two or three years of study, an American is scarcely capable of translating from French into English, or from English into very bad French; and is utterly incapable of sustaining any conversation whatever with a Frenchman. Book Synopsis The Pictorial French Course by : Paul Barbier
Download or read book The Pictorial French Course written by Paul Barbier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pictorial French Course: With Pictures, Descriptions, Conversations, And Grammar HE aim of this book is to give the learner the power of speaking in the foreign tongue in the most natural and interesting way. The Direct Method demands a teacher, and no book can pretend to do for the learner what a teacher can do. In the following pages, therefore, the author has not hesitated to modify the Direct Method to the extent necessary to make the work intelligible to the private student. After long experience of the use of Pictures as a means of suggesting subjects for conversations, the author makes no apology for their introduction to an extent not before attempted in books for older scholars, and in order that no unnecessary aid should be relied upon, the names of the objects are detached and numbers substituted. Although mainly written for class work, this modification makes the work specially suitable for learners studying without a teacher. The reader will desire a word of explanation as to the intro duction of the Phonograph. The utter inadequacy of the Phonetic or imitated pronunciation method of representing strange sounds by stranger combinations of symbols, has long struck the writer as being wearisome and ineffective, to say the least. He therefore was surprised to find that there existed, ready to his hand, an automatic teacher of the most reliable kind in the Phonograph. It is unnecessary to say, at the present time, that the Phonograph is able to reproduce faithfully the most complex sounds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in French IN preparing this book, particular attention has been paid to the needs of those beginning the study of a foreign language. The arrangement of the book is designed to combine the inductive and deductive methods of teaching French, and, as far as possible, to eliminate the disadvantages of each. The French vocabulary is based on the reading selection and is presented, not by artificial lists, but according to the natural principle of association of ideas. From the outset, connected passage: for reading are given; they include a broad range of everyday, conversational topics, and many incidental allusions to historical and literary subjects that allow fur ther expansion in the oral work of the classroom. The book readily lends itself to the needs of classes in which the advantages of the direct method are combined with those of the grammatical method. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Book Synopsis French by Reading by : Louise Seymour Houghton
Download or read book French by Reading written by Louise Seymour Houghton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French by Reading: A Progressive French Method Tim one point to be kept ever in view, in teaching French by this method, is to make the study easy. The pupil's mind should never be needlessly diverted from the main purpose, that of thinking in French, by any avoidable perplexity, either as to the meaning of a phrase or as to the grammatical principles which govern it. The vocabulary which is to give form to the thought is always the first consideration, and it is to be attained by the easiest and most rapid means possible. The grammatical rules are in every case to explain the form, never to precede it. In the case of very young pupils, therefore, it is desirable that even the notes explanatory of the lesson should be given by the teacher orally, rather than read by the pupil. In no case are they intended to be learned. The grammatical rules, on the contrary, are to be learned, and learned perfectly; but not until the reading lesson has been gone over at least once, - in the case of young children, twice. The method of study should, therefore, be as follows. First, the reading of the text of the lesson, with the interlinear translation, as far as it exists; after that, the text is to be read in class, without prep aration, the teacher supplying the English meaning of all new words. The second lesson should consist of the same text, prepared before hand by the aid of the Vocabulary at the end of the book (which contains only those translations of the word required by the book), and of the grammatical references, if needed. The third lesson should consist of the large type of the grammar lesson, thoroughly committed to memory, and a third reading of the text, at sight. In a class of older children, after the first nine lessons, two repetitions of the text should be sufficient, the grammar study accompanying the second repetition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Serial and Oral Method of Teaching Languages: Adapted to the French Third, To impress the elements upon the mind, as many of the Senses and the intellectual Faculties as can he enlisted in the work, are em loyed; the whole burthen of acquisition is not thrown, as in the o d grammar systems, upon the memory alone, which, becom ing overtasked, cannot perform the oflice required of it. The Serial and Oral Method, to impress the elements of language on the mind, makes use, First, of three out of five of the Senses: it makes use of Hun mo in the Oral Exercises; of sight in the reading exercises, and of sight and touch combined, in the written exercises. The writing of phrases, - which employs the sense of Touch as well as that of Sight, and which concentrates attention strongly is one of the most efiicient means of impressing on the memory. As the other two Senses cannot be emp oyed in the study of language, all the material avenues to the mind, which can he enlisted in this work, are resorted to by the present Method.
