Book excerpt: As humans charge up the steep slope of technological innovation, digital age media increasingly shapes our perception of everything--even spiritual matters. The next stage of spiritual development may be the product of a digital interface between our own image of the divine, virtual reality technology that produces real perceptions, and with devices that stimulate areas of the brain associated with spiritual experience. This book explores the influence of digital media on spirituality and the impact of the digital environment on our experience of the spiritual world. The author predicts a future in which digital technology and neuroscience will combine to create a new understanding of the divine. Book Synopsis The Sacred & the Digital by : F.G. (Frank) Bosman
Download or read book The Sacred & the Digital written by F.G. (Frank) Bosman and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video game studies are a relative young but flourishing academic discipline. But within game studies, however, the perspective of religion and spirituality is rather neglected, both by game scholars and religion scholars. While religion can take different shapes in digital games, ranging from material and referential to reflexive and ritual, it is not necessarily true that game developers depict their in-game religions in a positive, confirming way, but ever so often games approach the topic critically and disavowingly. The religion criticisms found in video games can be categorized as follows: religion as (1) fraud, aimed to manipulate the uneducated, as (2) blind obedience towards an invisible but ultimately non-existing deity/ies, as (3) violence against those who do not share the same set of religious rules, as (4) madness, a deranged alternative for logical reasoning, and as (5) suppression in the hands of the powerful elite to dominate and subdue the masses into submission and obedience. The critical depictions of religion in video games by their developers is the focus of this special issue.

Book excerpt: In a world where new technologies rise and fall by the hour, humanity is still plagued by the wanton inertia of its most fundamental institution – money. A messiah is born out of the zeitgeist and evangelizes an answer – cryptocurrencies. This is vehemently persecuted by the status quo and their blind zealots. SOVEREIGN, however, is one crypto that is rising above the smoke and noise, promising to lead the enlightened into a brave new world. But the incumbent power mongers refuse to go gentle into the night. Alexander Hamish, a bereft agent from FRONTIER – a covert, distributed network of spies operating at the intersection of technology, spy craft, and international interest – is tasked with SOVEREIGN’s destruction before its insidious promise of Utopian liberation becomes manifesto. Prejudiced, Hamish, better known in his world as Agent 27, embarks on the mission with a monomaniacal focus. 27 stumbles through a maze of double-edged technologies. With every step, his understanding of cryptocurrencies deepens while his grasp on society crumbles. He begins to question the very construct of the world around him – are governments a requisite for civilization, or is Man responsible for his own awakening? And just when the labyrinth’s exit is in sight, he confronts the daunting choice between saving the world and saving humanity’s one chance at salvation.
Download or read book All the Rave written by Joseph Menn and published by Crown Business. This book was released on 2003-04-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age seventeen, Shawn Fanning designed a computer program that transformed the Internet into an unlimited library of free music. Tens of millions of young people quickly signed on, Time magazine put Fanning on its cover, and his company, Napster, became a household name. It did not take long for the music industry to declare war, one that has now engulfed the biggest entertainment and technology companies on the planet. For All the Rave, top cyberculture journalist Joseph Menn gained unprecedented access to Fanning, other key Napster and music executives, reams of internal e-mails, unpublished court records, and other resources. The result is the definitive account of the Napster saga, for the first time revealing secret take-over and settlement talks, the unseen role of Shawn’s uncle in controlling Napster, and hidden agendas and infighting from Napster’s trenches to the top ranks of the German media giant Bertelsmann. All the Rave is a riveting account of genius and greed, visionary leaps and disastrous business decisions, and the clash of the hacker and investor cultures with that of the copyright establishment. Napster left a generation of music fans feeling that paying the recording industry close to twenty dollars for a CD was a foolish and unnecessary extravagance, which provoked a still-growing backlash against digital media consumers that might leave them with less control than ever. Here is the inside story of the young visionary and the company that made it happen. From the Hardcover edition.

Book Synopsis Understanding William Gibson by : Gerald Alva Miller, Jr.
Download or read book Understanding William Gibson written by Gerald Alva Miller, Jr. and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2016-02-28 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the science fiction author who popularized the concept of cyberspace Gerald Alva Miller Jr.'s Understanding William Gibson is a thoughtful examination of the life and work of William Gibson, author of eleven novels and twenty short stories. Gibson is the recipient of many notable awards for science fiction writing including the Nebula, Hugo, and Philip K. Dick awards. Gibson's iconic novel, Neuromancer, popularized the concept of cyberspace. With his early stories and his first trilogy of novels, Gibson became the father figure for a new genre of science fiction called "cyberpunk" that brought a gritty realism to its cerebral plots involving hackers and artificial intelligences. This study situates Gibson as a major figure in both science fiction history and contemporary American fiction, and it traces how his aesthetic affected both areas of literature. Miller follows a brief biographical sketch and a survey of the works that influenced him with an examination that divides Gibson's body of work into early stories, his three major novel trilogies, and his standalone works. Miller does not confine his study to major works but instead also delves into Gibson's obscure stories, published and unpublished screenplays, major essays, and collaborations with other authors. Miller's exploration starts by connecting Gibson to the major countercultural movements that influenced him (the Beat Generation, the hippies, and the punk rock movement) while also placing him within the history of science fiction and examining how his early works reacted against contemporaneous trends in the genre. These early works also exhibit the development of his unique aesthetic that would influence science fiction and literature more generally. Next a lengthy chapter explicates his groundbreaking Sprawl Trilogy, which began with Neuromancer. Miller then traces Gibson's aesthetic transformations across his two subsequent novel trilogies that increasingly eschew distant futures either to focus on our contemporary historical moment as a kind of science fiction itself or to imagine technological singularities that might lie just around the corner. These chapters detail how Gibson's aesthetic has morphed along with social, cultural, and technological changes in the real world. The study also looks at such standalone works as his collaborative steampunk novel, his attempts at screenwriting, his major essays, and even his experimental hypertext poetry. The study concludes with a discussion of Gibson's lasting influence and a brief examination of his most recent novel, The Peripheral, which signals yet another radical change in Gibson's aesthetic.

Download or read book Road Tales written by Darragh J Brady and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road Tales is a crazy trip across the world and documents a period of time in a British musician's life, when all that mattered was the music and the road ahead. It is a testament to other peoples stories rather than the writer, and digs into the mantle of what makes people tick while some people thrive others dive. The Author was intrigued by the amount of different tales he was hearing from the Aboriginal stolen generation, pushed back to a meagre existence on the fringes of society, to Guatemalan community leaders who would risk their lives to save the greater population of their native people. Each chapter is bound with a tinge of a rock musician on the edge of chaos finding himself in the strangest locations and situations, like having a gun pointed to his head in a Guatemalan rainforest, to causing mayhem entering the United States, though he always seams to find the beauty in the frail story of human existence. Road Tales consists of 15 chapters each one a different character from a different part of the world, each with their own archetype that seeks to give insights into the complicated tale of human nature. Each tale asks questions like, what is altruism?, what is faith?, what is guru worship? and what makes certain people reach up from adversity and succeed in being a better person through the challenges they have been given. If you are looking for an amazing read that takes you on a journey and at the end hopefully allows you to say "You know what, if they can get through their challenges then maybe I stand a chance with mine.

Book Synopsis Cities and the Digital Revolution by : Zaheer Allam
Download or read book Cities and the Digital Revolution written by Zaheer Allam and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence and development of data in cities. It exposes how Information Communication Technology (ICT) corporations seeking to capitalize on cities developing needs for urban technologies have contributed to many of the issues we are faced with today, including urbanization, centralization of wealth and climate change. Using several case studies, the book provides examples of the, in part, detrimental effects ICT driven ‘Smart City’ solutions have had and will have on the human characteristics that contribute to the identity and sense of belonging innate to many of our cities. The rise in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and technologies like social media, has changed how people interact with and in cities, and Allam discusses of how these changes require planners, engineers and other urban professionals to adjust their approach. The main question the book seeks to address is ‘how can we use emerging technologies to recalibrate our cities and ensure increased livability, whilst also effectively dealing with their associate challenges?’ This is an ongoing conversation, but one that requires extensive thought as it has extensive consequences. This book will be of interest to students, academics, professionals and policy makers across a broad range of subjects including urban studies, architecture and STS, geography and social policy.
