IN an introductory course on the Differential and Integral Calculus the subject of Infinite Series forms an important topic. The presentation of this subject should have in view first to make the beginner acquainted with the nature and use of infinite series and secondly to introduce him to the theory of these series in such a way that he sees at each step precisely what the question at issue is and never enters on the proof of a theorem till he feels that the theorem actually requires proof. Aids to the attainment of these ends are: (a) a variety of illustrations, taken from the cases that actually arise in practice, of the application of series to computation both in pure and applied mathematics; (b) a full and careful exposition of the meaning and scope of the more difficult theorems; (c) the use of diagrams and graphical illustrations in the proofs. The pamphlet that follows is designed to give a presentation of the kind here indicated. The references are to Byerly's Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, and Problems in Differential Calculus; and to B. O. Peirce's Short Table of Integrals. WM. F. OSGOOD.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Differential and Integral Calculus: With Numerous Examples The present work on the Differential and Integral Calculus is designed as a text-book for colleges and scientific schools. The aim has been to exhibit the subject in as concise and simple a manner as was consistent with rigor of demonstration, to make it as attractive to the beginner as the nature of the Calculus would permit, and to arrange the successive portions of the subject in the order best suited for the student. I have adopted the method of infinitesimals, having learned from experience that the fundamental principles of the subject are made more intelligible to beginners by the method of infinitesimals than by that of limits, while in the practical applications of the Calculus the investigations are carried on entirely by the method of infinitesimals. At the same time, a thorough knowledge of the subject requires the student should become acquainted with both methods; and for this reason, Chapter III is devoted exclusively to the method of limits. In this chapter, all the fundamental rules for differentiating algebraic and transcendental functions are obtained by the method of limits, so that the student may compare the two methods. This chapter may be omitted without interfering with the continuity of the work, but the omission of at least the first part of the chapter is not recommended. To familiarize the student with the principles of the subject, and to fix the principles in his mind, a large number of examples is given at the ends of the chapters. These examples have been carefully selected with the view of illustrating the most important points of the subject. The greater part of them will present no serious difficulty to the student, while a few may require some analytical skill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on the Differential Calculus: In Which the Method of Limits Is Exclusively Made Use Professor Peacock's excellent collection of Examples, which have been of such service to the Mathematical Student, is now out of print; but Mr Gregory's work lately published will supply its place, which contains, not only a great number of well-selected and valuable examples, but also many important explanations and theorems not to be met with in any elementary treas tise. In a subject of so much importance as the present, the student ought not to confine his atten tion to one book or system: for a very valuable treatise bu this subject he is referred to that published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
