Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,9, University of Plymouth, course: Bachelor Abschlussjahr, language: English, abstract: This report aims at explaining the differences between the strategy formulation of small and large firms, by examining major factors directly influencing the management and the strategy formulation within a firm. This analysis indicates that strategy formulation in large firms is a very formal process handled by top executives especially dedicated to this process. Small firms in contrast often suffer from a lack of resources and managerial skills. As a result, in small companies, the importance of strategy is often underestimated and not worked out with sufficient accuracy. This leads to a company’s performance often remaining under its market opportunities.

It raises questions, such as what is the strategic role of entrepreneurship in small businesses? How does the top management in small firms perceive the processes associated with strategy formulation? How are business strategies formulated and implemented in SMEs and importantly, are there lessons that can be learnt by large corporations from the smaller ones? Using a sample covering a wide range of entrepreneurial firms in the UK, the author addresses the lack of strategic thinking in the management of small firms and provides recommendations for effective strategic management processes.

Book excerpt: This innovative book combines theoretical and practical perspectives with the power of storytelling to present a new understanding of leadership as a concept and endeavour in the small business organisation. With the assertion that leadership capability is a key function of small firm survival and growth, it underlines the importance of addressing the phenomenon within small business. Employing storytelling as a fresh alternative to a traditional case study approach, the narrative of leading with purpose in real time is captured alongside relevant and current academic debate. In building upon the Harvard model of purpose driven leadership, the author offers a new definition and discussion of leadership that connects theory to real impact, based on research carried out with UK small business organisations. The overall aim of the book is to provoke interest in small business leadership and generate new knowledge of leading with purpose.

Book excerpt: A HIGH PERFORMANCE STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT PROCESS FOR MID-TIER COMPANIES Luck is not enough. You can create your future with radical thinking and a high performance process. Good processes will produce predictable results in terms of quality, innovation, performance and strategy. Superior processes will raise the bar even higher. Poor processes will reduce results significantly. The strategic processes currently available to small and medium sized businesses were designed for large corporations. They are driven by intense analytics. Their goal is to protect and optimize what already exists. This does not match the needs or the resources of mid-tier companies. This book proposes a high performance strategic planning process for small and mid-sized firms. It starts from the premise that 60 to 80% of the information required to formulate strategy is already present inside the organizaation. Generally, that is sufficent. The challenge is to design a process and develop specific tools or methodologies that are aligned to this approach for mid-tier comanies. Such tools, validated by solid field experience, are presented in the book as well as the culture and the mindset that are required to apply them successfully.
