Book excerpt: The report consists of three scientific papers, the outcome of three years of experimental work on ice I(h) single crystals and its theoretical interpretation. In the first paper a short description is given of crystal growing and sample handling techniques and of equipment covering the range (10 to the 5th) to (8 x 10 to the -3rd) Hz, 0C to -180C. Rigorous control of error limits and an improved computerized evaluation procedure alloys to resolve the dielectric spectrum of ice into four significant components with very characteristic trends. The interpretation of these data requires new models developed in the second paper. The third paper supplements the a-c polarization studies by d-c and transient measurements ranging from 0.01 to 40000 V/cm, from nanoamperes to microamp. and from 100 microseconds to 3 hrs. It appears that an ideal ice crystal seems really to have no ionic charge carrier transport through its volume but a very strong one along its surfaces. Instead of a saturation current we find a small extrinsic saturation charge, extractable in high fields and giving no evidence of a special proton transfer mechanism across hydrogen bridges. Aged single-crystal samples show six clearly separated relaxation spectra. Many contradictory statements in the literature about activation energies of conduction, etc., become clarified experimentally and understood. (Author).

Book Synopsis Properties of Materials by : Robert E. Newnham

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals are sometimes called 'Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom'. In addition to their great beauty, crystals and other textured materials are enormously useful in electronics, optics, acoustics and many other engineering applications. This richly illustrated text describes the underlying principles of crystal physics and chemistry, covering a wide range of topics and illustrating numerous applications in many fields of engineering using the most important materials today. Tensors, matrices, symmetry and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. While tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anisotropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to quantify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and partly on the basic physics and chemistry of materials. After introducing the point groups appropriate for single crystals, textured materials and ordered magnetic structures, the directional properties of many different materials are described: linear and nonlinear elasticity, piezoelectricity and electrostriction, magnetic phenomena, diffusion and other transport properties, and both primary and secondary ferroic behavior. With crystal optics (its roots in classical mineralogy) having become an important component of the information age, nonlinear optics is described along with the piexo-optics, magneto-optics, and analogous linear and nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Enantiomorphism, optical activity, and chemical anisotropy are discussed in the final chapters of the book.
Book Synopsis Diffusion in Condensed Matter by : Paul Heitjans

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, handbook-style survey of diffusion in condensed matter gives detailed insight into diffusion as the process of particle transport due to stochastic movement. It is understood and presented as a phenomenon of crucial relevance for a large variety of processes and materials. In this book, all aspects of the theoretical fundamentals, experimental techniques, highlights of current developments and results for solids, liquids and interfaces are presented.
Book Synopsis Ferroelectric Domain Walls by : Jill Guyonnet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the nano metric resolution of atomic force microscopy techniques, this work explores the rich fundamental physics and novel functionalities of domain walls in ferroelectric materials, the nano scale interfaces separating regions of differently oriented spontaneous polarization. Due to the local symmetry-breaking caused by the change in polarization, domain walls are found to possess an unexpected lateral piezoelectric response, even when this is symmetry-forbidden in the parent material. This has interesting potential applications in electromechanical devices based on ferroelectric domain patterning. Moreover, electrical conduction is shown to arise at domain walls in otherwise insulating lead zirconate titanate, the first such observation outside of multiferroic bismuth ferrite, due to the tendency of the walls to localize defects. The role of defects is then explored in the theoretical framework of disordered elastic interfaces possessing a characteristic roughness scaling and complex dynamic response. It is shown that the heterogeneous disorder landscape in ferroelectric thin films leads to a breakdown of the usual self-affine roughness, possibly related to strong pinning at individual defects. Finally, the roles of varying environmental conditions and defect densities in domain switching are explored and shown to be adequately modelled as a competition between screening effects and pinning.
Book Synopsis Topics in Surface Chemistry by : Eric Kay
Download or read book Topics in Surface Chemistry written by Eric Kay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at an international symposium on Topics in Surface Chemistry which was held in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany., September 7-9, 1977. The symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany. It has been recognized for many years that our understanding of bulk phenomena and their subsequent exploitation depends largely on our ability to define correlations between microscopic structure and the physical and chemical phenomena of interest. The role played by surface phenomena in the overall behavior of a material has been a subject for speculation for a long time, but only during the last decade or so have experimental and theor etical tools been developed which make it possible to investigate surface structure and related surface phenomena uniquely. Numerous surface spectroscopies have been developed in recent years intended to describe the geometric, vibrational and electronic structure of a surface. Our present understanding of surface, thin film and interfacial phenomena in solid state physics owes much to these developments. In chemistry much of the interest in surface science has come from the obvious implications to such important and diverse fields as catalysis and corrosion. It takes little imagination to recognize that there are many other areas where advances in surface science can be brought to bear.
