Book Synopsis The New Zealand Dictionary by : E. Orsman
Download or read book The New Zealand Dictionary written by E. Orsman and published by . This book was released on 1994-10-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ready acceptance of the first edition and the up-dating of parts of the research database, plus generous comments and suggestions for improvement allowed the prompt completion of the second edition of this unique dictionary only 15 months after the release of the first. This is now available in a sewn limp-covered edition. The jacketted Library Edition is now out of print. This is the first comprehensive dictionary of distinctive New Zealand English which is one of the youngest regional dialects of English but equal in status with such older regional dialects as those of Britain, North America or Australia. It is obvious that its differences from these other varieties of English must be much fewer than the similarities. However, dialect study tends to focus not on the vast common ground but rather on the distinctive differences in the broad area of spelling, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Most readers rely on the differences in the last two - pronunciation and vocabulary - to indicate the existence of a really distinctive New Zealand dialect. In this respect the special contribution of loanwords from Maori is most noticeable. The dictionary includes the most frequently used words and phrases which are in some way distinctively, and often exclusively, part of the spoken or written language of English-speaking New Zealanders. The dictionary makes the further obvious point that New Zealand English is a national language, one of two recognised by New Zealanders as their own.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of New Zealand by : Janine Hayward
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of New Zealand written by Janine Hayward and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse elements have created New Zealand’s distinctive political and social culture. First is New Zealand’s journey as a colony, and the various impacts this had on settler and Maori society. The second theme is the quest for what one prominent historian has labelled ‘national obsessions’ – equality and security, both individual and collective. The third, and more recent, theme is New Zealand’s emergence as a nation with a unique identity. New Zealand’s small geographic size and relative isolation from other societies, the dominant influence of British culture, the resurgence of Maori language and culture, the endemic instability of an economy based on a narrow range of pastoral products, and the dominance of the state in the lives of its people, all help to explain much of the present-day New Zealand psyche. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of New Zealand contains a chronology, an introduction, appendix, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 800 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about New Zealand.
