Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dictation Spelling Book, Vol. 1 This book is the result of a plan successfully worked out in the class-room by the compilers, and is therefore the direct outcome of practical experience. The chief object of the dictations is the teaching of correct spelling, but there are other distinct and definite aims. The two books constituting the series are in tended to cover the spelling work of four or five years, beginning with the fourth year. The first few dictations present little difficulty except that of paragraph form; but as the work advances, beside words which already form part of the child's speaking vocabulary, and are therefore valuable only as words to be correctly spelled, each selec tion also presents certain entirely new words with which the child has no acquaintance, and which are valuable not only as spelling material, but also as they serve to enrich his vocabulary. In teaching such words, it seems most essential that they be presented in their proper relation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common School Spelling Book American school children, from the descendants of the early colonists to the little immigrants of today, come from many races. These races do not attach the same sounds to the letters of the English alphabet. But if American chil dren may see in the pages of their first spelling book the usual combinations of English sounds in words, if they are made to feel the strength and beauty and natural growth of these words, they will develop instinctively a kind of language patriotism. They will come to know that the languages of their parents are represented just as truly in the structure of the English language as their races are rep resented in the American people. These different race-elements in our language have brought with them their conflicting systems of spelling. Nevertheless, in spite of this conflict, the majority of Eng lish words are fairly regular in spelling; that is, they are spelled according to rational principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word and Sentence Book a Graded Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 Spelling has an important place as a language exercise, and ability to use the pen in taking sentences from dictation is an efficient aid to composition. Writing sentences from dictation compels attention to details besides spelling. The correct use of capitals and punctuation marks, the division of words into syllables, and the selection of words which have homonyms cannot be overlooked. If proficiency in these could be attained, the instruction in composition would be relieved of many difficulties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictation Day by Day: A Modern Speller; Third Year Dictation day BY day is published with the hope that it may appeal to the teacher of the average child. A careful supervision of the work of little children has led the writer to believe that too much is often attempted during the first few years of a child's life. In the large cities, the standard cannot be what a few children, under exceptional circumstances, are able to accomplish, but what the child of ordinary capacity is able to master. Therefore the first principle Of these books is absolute Simplicity. A second principle that finds expression here is Repetition. All small, troublesome words the bane of composition work are repeated again and again, in every grade of the series. In these books, the unnatural arrangement of columns of words is reduced to a minimum. The old-fashioned method of teaching children to read, by compelling them to learn lists Of words, is happily abolished, and the day is not far distant When a similar method of teaching spelling will also be relegated to the Land of Forgotten Things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Book of Words and Dictation Exercises, or Advanced Lessons in Spelling Whenever a new book on any subject is presented to the public, every interested reader properly expects good and sufficient reasons to be assigned, and the authors of these spellers desire to place before the teachers of the country their reasons for the issuing of this Graded Series. It is a reproach to our schools that poor results in spelling are the rule, notwithstanding the fact that a large share of the school-day is devoted to the subject; and this being the case, it is natural that interested teachers should attempt to find a remedy, sparing no means to economize precious time in every subject of school study. We believe that the poor results in spelling are not due to indifference on the part of the pupils or the teachers, but rather to the manner in which the spelling books of the day have been planned and arranged. In this connection it may. Be proper to state that the authorship of these many spelling books is to be ascribed to teachers not actually engaged in the teaching of spelling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spelling Book After interest in a word has been aroused, the child's mind must be concentrated upon the peculiarity of its spelling and appealed to through all possible avenues, the eye, the ear, and the hand. So clear and strong should be the image formed that it becomes individual, even personal. For this reason, words included in this book have not been classified after the ace, mace, lace fashion, but have been purposely distributed so that each new word invites to fresh attack. There is no less authority for this mode of procedure than William T. Harris, who says that spelling lists should be arranged so as not to bring together a number of words of the same combination, and thereby paralyze the memory, as is too frequently the case in the lists given in spelling-books which, for example, collect in one lesson the words ending in tion, or tain, or ture, or ctous, etc., thus giving the pupil by the first word that is spelled a key to all that follow. In the first grade, however, there is a list of words containing the fundamental phonograms for ear training. The words in the book have not been syllabicated for two reasons that the child's image of the new word may be a unit, and that he may master it more thoroughly by analyzing it for himself. Especial attention is called to the exercises in construction which offer the child a larger practice in the ultimate use to which spelling is put that of composition. They are planned to correlate with the child's life at home and at school and to give him, as need arises, the spelling for particular words. (see index on pages xiii and xiv, also Suggestions to Teachers.) It is believed that in each case the lists of words will be found to include not only words requiring drill, but also words that will lead to a fuller life and a choicer diction. It is certainly desirable for a child to associate modest demeanor, self-control, and august presence with Washington; patience.
