Bandfield through his own words, transcribed through four of his diaries. Bandfield served on board the USS Vanderbilt as they chased the CSS Alabama across the Atlantic Ocean, and later served on board the USS Brooklyn during the Battle of Mobile Bay and the battles at Fort Fisher. Experience firsthand the journey of this Civil War Marine in this all-new volume documenting the life of Bandfield, edited by his descendants, Troy A. Hillman and Joan (Hillman) Hill. Also included in this volume is a biography of his life, family photos, several letters, perspectives on his life as seen through pension files, and finally, the brief "diary" of Pvt. Edwin C. McKee, fellow Marine, who recorded a month and a half of his voyage on the Vanderbilt, and whose voice is also preserved in these pages.

Book excerpt: The confiscated Yankee diary that ran in the Confederate press, fully annotated and illustrated with drawings by a fellow Civil War Marine. On September 28, 1863, the Galveston Tri-Weekly News included an item headlined “A Yankee Note-Book.” It was the first installment of a diary confiscated from U.S. Marine Henry O. Gusley, who had been captured at the Battle of Sabine Pass. It was so popular, the newspaper made an ongoing series of the entire diary, running each excerpt twice. For Confederate readers, Gusley's diary provided a rare glimpse into the opinions and feelings of an ordinary Yankee, an enemy whom—they quickly discovered—it would be easy to regard as a friend. This book contains the complete text of Henry Gusley’s Civil War diary, expertly annotated and introduced by Edward Cotham. One of the few surviving journals by a U.S. Marine serving along the Gulf Coast, it records some of the most important naval campaigns of the Civil War, including the spectacular Union success at New Orleans and the embarrassing defeats at Galveston and Sabine Pass. It also offers an unmatched portrait of life aboard ship. It also includes previously unpublished drawings by Daniel Nestell—a doctor who served alongside Gusley—depicting many of the events the diary describes. Together, Gusley's diary and Nestell's drawings are like picture postcards from the Civil War: vivid, literary, moving dispatches from one of “Uncle Sam's nephews in the Gulf.”

Book excerpt: When poet Fannie Toyne talked about her father, Charles Brother, which was hardly ever, she said her earliest memory was being thrown out a window. When Civil War Marine Charles Brother talked about "the boys," which was often, he talked of the pursuit of that prize ship and the Battle of Mobile Bay when Admiral Farragut reportedly cried out, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" Drenched in history and sea salt, The Boys of Bath is a saga of sacrifice and loyalty, exhibiting the few and proud men of rare, high spirit: the first to go in, not flinching for canon, shipwreck, or mines. Charles Brother wrote of life in Bath, New York, and in the barracks in Boston and Brooklyn, the New York Draft Riots, gunnery, targets, storms, and drilling with terrific shipmates-men who were agile and ready to fly in the ropes and through life-his fraternity. His story is about the bloody correction of the nineteenth century, made by grandsons of slave owners, a story relevant only to those who know well this business of being wrong about all of it-the true cost of sin against a race and the exit strategy, the unspoken promise to be silent, the pursuit of a prize, and the torpedo mines primed to give way to that switch, even those only in your head.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, an Irishman who in June 1922 was assassinated on his doorstep in London by Irish republicans, was one of the most controversial British soldiers of the modern age. Before 1914 he did much to secure the Anglo-French alliance and was responsible for the planning which saw the British Expeditionary Force successfully despatched to France after the outbreak of war with Germany. A passionate Irish unionist, he gained a reputation as an intensely 'political' soldier, especially during the 'Curragh crisis' of 1914 when some officers resigned their commisssions rather than coerce Ulster unionists into a Home Rule Ireland. During the war he played a major role in Anglo-French liaison, and ended up as Chief of the Imperial General Staff, professional head of the army, a post he held until February 1922. After Wilson retired from the army, he became an MP and was chief security adviser to the new Northern Ireland government. As such, he became a target for nationalist Irish militants, being identified with the security policies of the Belfast regime, though wrongly with Protestant sectarian attacks on Catholics. He is remembered today in unionist Northern Ireland as a kind of founding martyr for the state. Wilson's reputation was ruined in 1927 with the publication of an official biography, which quoted extensively and injudiciously from his entertaining, indiscreet, and wildly opinionated diaries, giving the impression that he was some sort of Machiavellian monster. In this first modern biography, using a wide variety of official and private sources for the first time, Keith Jeffery reassesses Wilson's life and career and places him clearly in his social, national, and political context.

Book excerpt: Revised and updated Shortlisted for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award From one of the most important economic thinkers of our time, a brilliant and far-seeing analysis of the current populist backlash against globalization. Raghuram Rajan, distinguished University of Chicago professor, former IMF chief economist, head of India's central bank, and author of the 2010 FT-Goldman-Sachs Book of the Year Fault Lines, has an unparalleled vantage point onto the social and economic consequences of globalization and their ultimate effect on our politics. In The Third Pillar he offers up a magnificent big-picture framework for understanding how these three forces--the state, markets, and our communities--interact, why things begin to break down, and how we can find our way back to a more secure and stable plane. The "third pillar" of the title is the community we live in. Economists all too often understand their field as the relationship between markets and the state, and they leave squishy social issues for other people. That's not just myopic, Rajan argues; it's dangerous. All economics is actually socioeconomics - all markets are embedded in a web of human relations, values and norms. As he shows, throughout history, technological phase shifts have ripped the market out of those old webs and led to violent backlashes, and to what we now call populism. Eventually, a new equilibrium is reached, but it can be ugly and messy, especially if done wrong. Right now, we're doing it wrong. As markets scale up, the state scales up with it, concentrating economic and political power in flourishing central hubs and leaving the periphery to decompose, figuratively and even literally. Instead, Rajan offers a way to rethink the relationship between the market and civil society and argues for a return to strengthening and empowering local communities as an antidote to growing despair and unrest. Rajan is not a doctrinaire conservative, so his ultimate argument that decision-making has to be devolved to the grass roots or our democracy will continue to wither, is sure to be provocative. But even setting aside its solutions, The Third Pillar is a masterpiece of explication, a book that will be a classic of its kind for its offering of a wise, authoritative and humane explanation of the forces that have wrought such a sea change in our lives.
