Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the ways in which ideas of heroic discourse and the socio-religious and political needs of the period moulded iconography, this book explores the evolution of the iconography of the early mediaeval Hindu temples of the Indian peninsula, over the course of the sixth-twelfth centuries C.E. In order to study the socio-religious and political atmosphere in which the early mediaeval temple iconography grew and developed its specific forms, the author makes use of the inscriptions, archaeological and the literary materials ranging from the fourth centuries B.C.E. to the thirteenth century C.E., as these give an idea of the continuities and discontinuities in the ideas of heroic and political discourses which lie at the back of the visual art forms that they created. Of particular interest are the royal charters, issued in Sanskrit and Tamil, the religious narratives from the Sanskrit epics and the Puranas, iconographic canons that form a part of the religious texts known as the Agamas, written in Sanskrit, the court literature of the early mediaeval period and the early historical Sangam Tamil literature, apart from the archaeological material from the Indian peninsula. The author focuses particularly on exploring the ideas of power current in the society that created the narrative iconography of the period and the region studied.

Book excerpt: About the Book: For the first time, Mamallapuram, Dharmaraja Ratha is vividly discussed by the hereditarypractising architect and a qualified researcher from the science and technological angle, thereby never been viewed before. Sincere efforts have been applied to reveal the legacies of Dharmaraja Ratha. For delivering this book, the historically significant structures have been visited by the author and explained in an analytical and deductive method. Viewing the Dharmaraja Ratha through the eyes of science and technology as prescribed in the ancient literary texts, desires and effects of the Pallava monarchy in showing the unfettered love for art and architecture and discovering the founder of Dharmaraja Ratha through the Sthapati's technological angle were explained in this book. It is indeed as a musician elucidating the musical structure and fluidity by singing with his tone from his studio. About the Author: Dr.K.Dakshinamoorthy PhD., 59, is the Sthapati in the Heritage Committee, constituted by the High court, for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department, Government of Tamilnadu. He is the Managing Trustee in the Vastu Vedic Trust, founded by his Uncle and guru Dr V. Ganapati Sthapati. His father, Sthapati Sri. S.K. Achary was the Designer Sthapati of Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari. K.Dakshinamoorthy has designed many temples in India and countries such as the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New-Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Srilanka. He has presented many papers in architecture and sculpture, delivered lectures, and he has written a Tamil book 'Uli Ezhutthukkal, ' released by the then Governor of Tamilnadu. His long desire was fulfilled with this book on Vatapikonda Narasimha Pallava's Dharmaraja Ratha, bring out its legacies from an unseen angle, from his workroom, from where Dharmaraja Ratha and its intangible heritage has never been viewed before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To scholars in the field, the need for an up-to-date overview of the art of South Asia has been apparent for decades. Although many regional and dynastic genres of Indic art are fairly well understood, the broad, overall representation of India's centuries of splendor has been lacking. The Art of Ancient India is the result of the author's aim to provide such a synthesis. Noted expert Sherman E. Lee has commented: –Not since Coomaraswamyês History of Indian and Indonesian Art (1927) has there been a survey of such completeness.” Indeed, this work restudies and reevaluates every frontier of ancient Indic art _ from its prehistoric roots up to the period of Muslim rule, from the Himalayan north to the tropical south, and from the earliest extant writing through the most modern scholarship on the subject. This dynamic survey-generously complemented with 775 illustrations, including 48 in full color and numerous architectural ground plans, and detailed maps and fine drawings, and further enhanced by its guide to Sanskrit, copious notes, extensive bibliography, and glossary of South Asian art terms-is the most comprehensive and most fully illustrated study of South Asian art available. The works and monuments included in this volume have been selected not only for their artistic merit but also in order to both provide general coverage and include transitional works that furnish the key to an all encompassing view of the art. An outstanding portrayal of ancient Indiaês highest intellectual and technical achievements, this volume is written for many audiences: scholars, for whom it provides an up-to-date background against which to examine their own areas of study; teachers and students of college level, for whom it supplies a complete summary of and a resource for their own deeper investigations into Indic art; and curious readers, for whom it gives a broad-based introduction to this fascinating area of world art.

Book excerpt: In the study of Indian art prior to the Mughal period, portraiture has so far been much neglected, when its existence has not simply been denied. This book is an attempt to reassess this issue, by showing that portraits have existed in great number in early India, since probably the first artistic achievements. Through a close scrutiny of sculpted and (more rarely) painted images brought together with textual and epigraphical references, it aims at highlighting the specificities of Indian portraiture, its relationship with divine images and, consequently, at understanding the development of Indian imagery. It questions also the social and religious implications related to this issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a full account of Siva's Dance of Bliss, which has become a popular symbol in the West for Hinduism and Eastern Mysticism. Siva is one of the two main gods of Hinduism, and his worshippers comprise half of all Hindus. Siva's Dance of Bliss is based on a remarkable Sanskrit poem written by Umapati Sivacarya, Saiva theologian and temple priest in Cidambaram, South India, in the fourteenth century. Starting with the bronze image of Nataraja, King of Dancers, thereafter the Cidambaram temple, its myth and its priests are viewed in the light of the poem. Umapati's Saiva theology is discussed in relation to his life and also in relation to Vedanta and yoga. The iconography and mythology of the Goddess and of other forms of Siva provide necessary perspective. Art from Cidambaram and neighbouring sites illuminates the text.
