Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magic springs from unexpected sources. In the second novel of The Werewolves of Rebellion series, Phillip Andrews, second-in-command of the Werewolves of Rebellion, bumps into Daffodil, a leggy blond, and falls hard for her. There’s only one problem—she’s the River Rebel’s branded property. But Daffodil has even worse problems and finds herself in a dangerous, abusive sexual game with Ezra Smith, acting president of the River Rebels. Upon meeting Phillip, Daffodil can’t get him out of her mind. He gives her hope and strength, things no man has ever inspired in her before. If she tries to leave the River Rebels, Ezra will surely find her and murder Phillip. And when she foils one of Ezra’s human-trafficking shipments, Daffodil is forced to escape the MC and go into hiding in Phillip’s arms. As Halloween approaches, the Werewolves of Rebellion are faced with bizarre deaths in their MC. Men are found drained of everything, leaving only mummified husks behind. Demon-women tantalize dreams and frighten everyone in the MC. Bernadette, mate to club president Frank Nightshade, is now an apprentice witch, but although she keeps trying to protect the MC and Frank’s clan from evil, now she must save Phil and his new woman, Daffodil, too. The only way that Phil and Daffodil can be together is to vanquish the demons, but in doing so, how many will lose their lives, and will it be worth it for their love?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merezhkovsky's bold claim that "all Russian literature is, to a certain degree, a struggle with the temptation of demonism" is undoubtedly justified. And yet, despite its evident centrality to Russian culture, the unique and fascinating phenomenon of Russian literary demonism has so far received little critical attention. This substantial collection fills the gap. A comprehensive analytical introduction by the editor is follwed by a series of fourteen essays, written by eminent scholars in their fields. The first part explores the main shaping contexts of literary demonism: the Russian Orthodox and folk tradition, the demonization of historical figures, and views of art as intrinsically demonic. The second part traces the development of a literary tradition of demonism in the works of authors ranging from Pushkin and Lermontov, Gogol and Dostoevsky, through to the poets and prose writers of modernism (including Blok, Akhmatova, Bely, Sologub, Rozanov, Zamiatin), and through to the end of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the true story of a political murder that horried Russians in 1869, Fyodor Dostoevsky conceived of Demons as a "novel-pamphlet" in which he would say everything about the plague of materialist ideology that he saw infecting his native land. What emerged was a prophetic and ferociously funny masterpiece of ideology and murder in pre-revolutionary Russia.

Book excerpt: This sourcebook provides the first systematic overview of witchcraft laws and trials in Russia and Ukraine from medieval times to the late nineteenth century. Witchcraft in Russia and Ukraine, 1000–1900 weaves scholarly commentary with never-before-published primary source materials translated from Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. These sources include the earliest references to witchcraft and sorcery, secular and religious laws regarding witchcraft and possession, full trial transcripts, and a wealth of magical spells. The documents present a rich panorama of daily life and reveal the extraordinary power of magical words. Editors Valerie A. Kivelson and Christine D. Worobec present new analyses of the workings and evolution of legal systems, the interplay and tensions between church and state, and the prosaic concerns of the women and men involved in witchcraft proceedings. The extended documentary commentaries also explore the shifting boundaries and fraught political relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the fourth of five planned in Joseph Frank's widely acclaimed biography of Dostoevsky, covers the six most remarkably productive years in the novelist's entire career. It was in this short span of time that Dostoevsky produced three of his greatest novels--Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Devils--and two of his best novellas, The Gambler and The Eternal Husband. All these masterpieces were written in the midst of harrowing practical and economic circumstances, as Dostoevsky moved from place to place, frequently giving way to his passion for roulette. Having remarried and fled from Russia to escape importuning creditors and grasping dependents, he could not return for fear of being thrown into debtor's prison. He and his young bride, who twice made him a father, lived obscurely and penuriously in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, as he toiled away at his writing, their only source of income. All the while, he worried that his recurrent epileptic attacks were impairing his literary capacities. His enforced exile intensified not only his love for his native land but also his abhorrence of the doctrines of Russian Nihilism--which he saw as an alien European importation infecting the Russian psyche. Two novels of this period were thus an attempt to conjure this looming spectre of moral-social disintegration, while The Idiot offered an image of Dostoevsky's conception of the Russian Christian ideal that he hoped would take its place.

Book excerpt: Based on Lu Xun's works and book collections, this book explores the significant influence of Russian literature, art, and thinking on Lu Xun's thoughts and works. Through the analysis of rich historical materials and literary texts, this book shows the profound influence of Russian literary and artistic resources on Chinese writers, especially on Lu Xun. It delves into Lu Xun's literary and translation concepts, as well as his intellectual and aesthetic views, all of which bear the imprint of Russian culture. The author closely examines notable themes in his works, including nationality, class, the avant-garde, and cosmopolitanism, which offer insight into his overarching historical vision and provide a glimpse into the era. Unlike previous studies of the influence of Russian literature, this book delves deeper into literary history by examining intellectual history without adhering to a pan-ideological point of view. Through the lens of cultural history, it also illuminates the cultural landscape of modern China, unraveling the intellectual ideas and debates of the twentieth century and the emergence of Chinese left-wing literature. The title will appeal to scholars, students, and general readers interested in Lu Xun studies, modern Chinese literature, and Chinese culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reissued with an introduction by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a stunning and disquieting novel of heroism and cowardice A masterful novel that was a huge bestseller in Europe, The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman is a testament to the power of literature. Now with an introduction by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who named it her “favorite book no one else has heard of” in the New York Times, the novel follows Irma Seidenman, a young Jewish widow in Nazi-occupied Warsaw in 1943, who possesses two attributes that can spell the difference between life and death: blue eyes and blond hair. With these features, and a set of false papers, she slips out of the ghetto, passing as the wife of a Polish officer, until one day an informer spots her on the street and drags her off to the Gestapo. At times a dark lament, at others a sly and sardonic thriller, The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman is the story of the thirty-six hours that follow Irma's arrest and the events that lead to her dramatic rescue as the last of Warsaw’s Jews are about to meet their deaths in the burning ghetto.

Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study in any language about this Russian artist--Marius Petipa's colleague and Tchaikovsky's collaborator--who is widely celebrated and yet virtually unknown. It follows Ivanov from his infancy in a St Petersburg foundling home through to his career as a dancer, r gisseur, and choreographer in the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet. Ivanov's artistic world is described, as is his legacy-- some dozen works, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the famous dances from Prince Igor--that inspired Mikhail Fokine in the next generation. The book is richly documented, including the first complete publication of Ivanov's memoirs and hundreds of citations, many published here for the first time, from state documents, reminiscences, and criticism.
