Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role might the Devil have in health and illness? The Devil is Disorder explores constructions of the body, health, illness and wider misfortune in a Trinidadian village where evangelical Christianity is growing in popularity. Based on long-term ethnography and locating the village in historical and global context, the book takes a nuanced cosmological approach to situate evangelical Christian understandings as shaping and being shaped by their context and, in the process, shaping individuals themselves. As people move from local to global subjects, health here stretches beyond being a matter of individual bodies and is connected to worldwide flows and networks, spirit entities, and expansive moral orders.

Book excerpt: "The relationships between the Devil and disease, sickness and sin, healing and forgiveness, and exorcism and deliverance form an intriguing and controversial set of issues. This monograph brings some clarity to the topic by offering the first full-length examination of the origins of illness in New Testament thought. In an attempt to respect the diversity of thought within the New Testament, the author employs a method that allows the distinctive contributions of each New Testament writer to be appreciated on their own terms. These readings are followed by an attempt at the construction of a New Testament theology of the Devil, disease and deliverance where the distinctive New Testament voices on this topic are heard in relation to one another. The monograph concludes with a chapter devoted to the implications of this study for Pentecostal theology and ministry."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The universal human instinct is to run from an outbreak of disease like Ebola. These doctors run toward it. Their job is to stop epidemics from happening. They are the disease detective corps of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the federal agency that tracks and tries to prevent disease outbreaks and bioterrorist attacks around the world. They are formally called the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS)—a group founded more than fifty years ago out of fear that the Korean War might bring the use of biological weapons—and, like intelligence operatives in the traditional sense, they perform their work largely in anonymity. They are not household names, but over the years they were first to confront the outbreaks that became known as hantavirus, Ebola, and AIDS. Every day they work to protect us by hunting down the deadly threats that we forget until they dominate our headlines, West Nile virus, anthrax, and SARS among others. In this riveting narrative, Maryn McKenna—the only journalist ever given full access to the EIS in its fifty-three-year history—follows the first class of disease detectives to come to the CDC after September 11, the first to confront not just naturally occurring outbreaks but the man-made threat of bioterrorism. They are talented researchers—many with young families—who trade two years of low pay and extremely long hours for the chance to be part of the group that are on the frontlines, in the yellow suits and masks, that has helped eradicate smallpox, push back polio, and solve the first major outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease, toxic shock syndrome, and E. coli O157 and works to battle every new disease before it becomes an epidemic. Urgent, exhilarating, and compelling, Beating Back the Devil takes you inside the world of these medical detectives who are trying to stop the next epidemic—before the epidemics stop us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people are predators. They have been predators all their lives. But when you encounter these people, they will not present themselves as predators. The absolute reverse is the case. They will depict themselves as victims and prey, heroically fighting back against the predators. They will style themselves as martyrs, fixers, healers, gurus, ascended masters, saviors, messiahs. There is no lie they are not prepared to tell. The bigger the lie, the better the lie, as far as they are concerned. Who are these people? They are the people with Lucifer Syndrome. But the world has a different name for them. It calls them malignant narcissists. However, their prototype is Lucifer, who believed himself the brightest and most perfect of all Creation. Lucifer hated and envied God and could not accept God's superiority and brighter light. It drove him mad. It drove him to war. It drove him to his destruction, his immortal mortification in hell. Evil is real, and there is real evil in our midst. Luciferians are walking amongst us, always lying to us, always trying to do us harm. Like Lucifer himself, they adore themselves and think they are God. They want everyone else to kneel to them and worship them, and they are prepared to say and do anything and trample over any and all bodies to get there. M. Scott Peck called them the "People of the Lie", and that's absolutely right. These people are incapable of being truthful. Humanity can now give a name to the worst and most dangerous people on earth – a menace to all decent, moral, ethical people. They are malignant narcissists and they are pure evil. They have no redeeming qualities. None. The human race must learn to identify them and take decisive action against them, to cut out this cancer of evil. The Antichrist does not present himself as a monster. He presents himself as Christ. Never forget that. There are those on YouTube and social media literally preaching that Lucifer is Jesus. Watch out for them. The snake from Eden has come forth again, and its hiss and lies are louder than ever. If we cut off the head of the snake, we can return to Eden. Isn't it time we faced down evil? Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." It has always been thus. Adam and Eve were deceived by the shining lies of the first malignant narcissist – Lucifer. We must not be. Like the cherubim with their fiery swords, we must drive out the snakes amongst us, the Luciferian predators, the evil narcissists. It's God's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluoride and fluoridation will go down as one of the greatest controversies of the 20th century. Up until the early 1940’s, fluorine’s effect on life was always deemed poisonous. It was proven to be altering enzymes used by living organisms to carry out a multitude of essential processes. Fluorine, the most reactive element on the planet, is also the strongest free radical. Scientists in the 1930’s and 1940’s experimented with this element to create the most deadly nerve gasses, rocket fuel, and radioactive U235 for the bomb. As a wood preservative, rodentcide and insecticide, fluorine compounds are second to none. As an Orthodontist, I began investigating the increasingly prevalent lines and spots that I saw on the enamel of children. Like rings on a tree, they indicate excessive fluorine exposure. I started to ask the question, “How does fluorine cause these marks?” Chronic doses of fluoride, like arsenic and lead, accumulate in our bodies causing a blockage in the way cells breathe and leads to the malformation of collagen. Cancer, diabetes, thyroid and neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, heart disease, arthritis and osteoporosis have all been linked to chronic fluoride ingestion. We are now exposed to increasing doses of fluoride from toothpaste, rinses, water, food, medicines, showering, bathing, and even the air that we breathe. Our environment has become a literal fluoride dumping ground. This book explores many chronic diseases that plague man today and looks at the scientists that connected these diseases to chronic exposures of fluoride.

Book excerpt: In this in-depth study, The Lucifer Syndrome, by author Bill Faught, Jr., examines the historical biblical text, bringing forth the flaws of Lucifer's character; the reasons for his disqualification and banishment from heaven; and the remedy for his infectious disease infiltrating today's worship and leadership. Informative and insightful, The Lucifer Syndrome is an intriguing and masterful description of eternity's past, present, and future. This astute look into the Scripture will pull a wide range of believers into the real world of heaven and God's love-call to the earth. When every believer stands before the judgment seat of Christ, he hopes to hear, 'Well done. You have not exemplified The Lucifer Syndrome.'

Book excerpt: This 2012 release also includes the complete revised text of the author's well-received 1996 book The Unwelcome Companion, An Insider's View of Tourette Syndrome. The 1996 edition was one of the first books written by a person with TS that openly discussed the internal mental processes that accompany tics and other symptoms. The new chapters further reveal (in greater detail) how it feels to experience the tics, obsessions, and compulsions commonly associated with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. The book only lightly touches on medical information and remains highly focused on taking the reader far inside the Tourettic mind. For those interested in a view of Tourette syndrome from within, this is a "must read."

Book excerpt: Many Christians live as though they are effectively alone in the world. However, there is another realm of intelligent life that plays a role in the world—angelic beings. This book explores the doctrine of angels and demons, answering key questions about their nature and the implications for Christians' beliefs and behavior, helping readers see their place in the larger biblical plotline that includes supernatural beings. An understanding of the reality of angels and demons encourages believers to be vigilant in the light of spiritual warfare and to be confident in Christ's victory on the cross.

This was extremely difficult for me because it was hard to line up with my long-held views of spiritual and mental health. Then while pastoring my wife's home church I had a complete emotional breakdown. In 2008, I spent two different weeks in a hospital on suicide watch. I was diagnosed with a bipolar condition. Because of professional advice, I retired from the pastoral ministry. This book is my story. I was encouraged to write this by my psychiatrist. It is full of gut-wrenching truth but is also full of hope and encouragement. I genuinely believe that many might be helped by reading this book and applying some of the principles that have helped me. Remember, God still loves you and never gives up on you. Raymond Edwards

Book excerpt: This volume explores culture-bound syndromes, defined as a pattern of symptoms (mental, physical, and/or relational) experienced only by members of a specific cultural group and recognized as a disorder by members of those groups, and their coverage in popular culture. Encompassing a wide range of popular culture genres and mediums – from film and TV to literature, graphic novels, and anime – the chapters offer a dynamic mix of approaches to analyze how popular culture has engaged with specific culture-bound syndromes such as hwabyung, hikikomori, taijin kyofusho, zou huo ru mo, sati, amok, Cuban hysteria, voodoo death, and others. Spanning a global and interdisciplinary remit, this first-of-its-kind anthology will allow scholars and students of popular culture, media and film studies, comparative literature, medical humanities, cultural psychiatry, and philosophy to explore simultaneously a diversity of popular cultures and culturally rooted mental health disorders.

Drawing from Jewish and Christian theories, Eckardt describes comedy as a means to distinguish the divine from the diabolic. He presents a thorough critique of efforts throughout history to justify God in the presence of radical evil and suffering. How to Tell God From the Devil is a sequel to Eckardt's fascinating earlier study Sitting in the Earth and Laughing. Eckardt employs a variety of historical, psychological, sociological, philosophical, and theological sources. He discusses and assesses such diverse figures as Martin Luther, Reinhold Niebuhr, Zen Buddhists, Conrad Hyers, Nancy A. Walker, Jon D. Levenson, and Harvey Cox. How to Tell God From the Devil is an exceptional work, and will be significant and enjoyable for sociologists, theologians, philosophers, and specialists concerned with the study of humor.
