Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The relationships between the Devil and disease, sickness and sin, healing and forgiveness, and exorcism and deliverance form an intriguing and controversial set of issues. This monograph brings some clarity to the topic by offering the first full-length examination of the origins of illness in New Testament thought. In an attempt to respect the diversity of thought within the New Testament, the author employs a method that allows the distinctive contributions of each New Testament writer to be appreciated on their own terms. These readings are followed by an attempt at the construction of a New Testament theology of the Devil, disease and deliverance where the distinctive New Testament voices on this topic are heard in relation to one another. The monograph concludes with a chapter devoted to the implications of this study for Pentecostal theology and ministry."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: In this Centre for Pentecostal Theology Short Introduction to Spiritual Warfare, African Pentecostal theologian and church leader, Opoku Onyinah offers a helpful introduction to and overview of a much debated and controversial topic for the parish as well as the academy. Part One is devoted to an overview of what people are saying about spiritual warfare, territorial warfare, and an initial identification of some problems with the spiritual warfare paradigm. Part Two offers a biblical redefinition of spiritual warfare, and the way in which Jesus' own victories serve as a paradigm for the believer. Part Three focuses on spiritual strongholds that are evidence of a variety of Satan's schemes. In Part Four, Onyinah identifies and defines the weapons Christians have at their disposal when doing battle with Satan and those under his sway, with an entire chapter devoted to deliverance - offering guidance on how to discern when deliverance is needed. The author of an academic work on 'Witchdemonology', in this book Dr Onyinah makes his theological training and ministerial experience accessible to those seeking basic practical guidance on this topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A worldview of "spiritual warfare" is widely held among charismatics and Pentecostals, but it has been criticized for producing paranoia and denying personal responsibility. It is less well known that the term was first used in print around 1970 by Anglican charismatics. What did it mean to them then, and what are the practical effects of their worldview? Should we now be adopting a more sophisticated ontology of evil, such as Nigel Wright's "non-ontological realist" view or Amos Yong's "apophatic theology" of the demonic, rather than the traditional one that Satan and demons are real ontological entities? This practical theological study begins with a study of Anglican charismatic pioneers, and an in-depth case study of a charismatic Anglican congregation, before grappling with the ontological question in dialogue with Wright (together with Barth and Walter Wink), Yong, and Gregory Boyd. A fresh engagement with the biblical texts then argues for a positive, realist ontology for rebellious demonic powers and presents a Trinitarian model of spiritual warfare praxis that emphasizes personal responsibility and promotes freedom from fear.

If you think you’ve read all you need to know about healing, it’s time to take another look. In this updated edition with expanded material, Dr. Wright clearly shows that disease is not a random occurrence and that science and medicine have their place in dealing with illness but can only offer disease management. What if the answers to true healing and freedom have been in the Bible all along? Dr. Wright spent decades learning the spiritual roots of disease and blocks to healing. In his journey, he discovered that there is a spiritual root issue in about 80 percent of all diseases, which is a direct result of a breakdown in our relationship with God, ourselves, or others. Through his groundbreaking teachings, he helped hundreds of thousands to experience wholeness in their lives. If you have recently received a diagnosis or have been struggling with your health for years, there is hope and healing ahead. “Dr. Henry Wright destroys the lie that we are helpless victims of diseases…. This book is long overdue and is essential reading for any Christian struggling with sickness and for those who seek to minister to them.” —Dr. Rebecca Williams, MA, MB ChB, DRCOG, DCH, DTM&H “Dr. Wright uses a solid scriptural base to reveal the roots of disease and give clear guidance on how we can be free in spirit, soul, and body!” —Sheila Pitcock, LVN

Book excerpt: "My initial goal was to write a book on the defeat of Satan in New Testament theology covering all the witnesses of the New Testament using a title suchas 'falling like lightning.' ... But it became evident that although the defeat of Satan is central to the exorcisms of the synoptic gospels, many authors of the New Testament simply do not speak explicitly about a 'defeat of Satan.' For example, Paul, Ephesians and Colossians, if they explicitly speak of the devil (or allude to him), speak instead of nbeing redeemed from the dominion of Satan. ... I therefore moved more in the direction of considering how the human being is redeemed from the effects of Satan."--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What place do the four Gospels give Satan, demons, and Jesus’ human opponents (including Jewish leaders but also Jesus’ disciples) in their accounts of Jesus’ life? This study takes a literary-historical approach to the Gospels, examining them as narratives. It shows how the authors were in the process of developing the devil as a character and determining which roles he filled. New interpretations of individual passages in the Gospels are given as well as new understandings of the theological emphases of each author. This study is also a contribution to redaction criticism and the relative chronology of the Gospels. It employs the theory of Matthean posteriority which revolutionizes our understanding of the literary relations between the Gospels and allows for a new understanding of theological development in early Christianity.

John Eckhardt has created the ultimate deliverance thesaurus to help believers know the specific names and attributes of demons so they can become more successful in casting them out. We fear the unknown, but there is power in identification. The demons unmasked in this thesaurus are well aware that they are subject to the name of Jesus, the name above every name! By identifying demons, the believer strips them of their power and exhibits Christ’s authority over every demon. Don’t run from the devil; begin casting out the enemy and stand victorious with Jesus Christ!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cato Gulaker employs narrative criticism to explore where the depiction of Satan found in the Book of Revelation is positioned on the axis of two divergent roles. The literary character of Satan is commonly perceived to gradually evolve from the first divine agents in the Hebrew Bible, representing the darker sides of the divine governing of affairs (Job 1–2; Zech 3; 1 Chr 21:1; Num 22:22, 32), to the full-blown enemy of God of the post-biblical era. However, Gulaker posits that texts referring to Satan in between these two poles are not uniform and diverge considerably. This book argues for a new way of perceiving Satan in Revelation that provides a more probable reading, as it creates less narrative dissonance than the alternative of the ancient combat myth/cosmic conflict between Satan and God. From this reading emerges a subdued Satan more akin to its Hebrew Bible hypotexts and Second Temple Judaism parallels – one that fits seamlessly with the theology, cosmology and the overarching plot of the narrative itself. Gulaker explores the functions of Satan in a text written relatively late compared to the rest of the New Testament, but with strong affinities to the Hebrew Bible, concluding that Satan is characterized more as the leash, rod, and sifting device in the hand of God, than as his enemy.
