Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the English Novel IN every discussion of tendencies the term evolution claims a place with almost the insist ence of a prescriptive right. No other term localizes the phenomena so definitely, and con veys so promptly the notion of progress in a general line of tendency. Nevertheless, I think most of us would, if we could, rather avoid the term than insist upon it in literary discussion. For the use of the word evolution seems to involve a very elaborate theory. In the title of this chapter - The Evolution of the Novel - the idea suggested indicates that we can name the earlier forms out of which the true novel has been evolved; can arrange. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the English Novel This book aims to trace in outline the course of English fiction from Arthurian romance to Stevenson, and to indicate, especially in the earlier chapters, Continental sources and tributaries. I hope that the volume may be of service to the student as a preliminary to detailed investigation in special epochs; and of interest to the general reader, who may wish to follow some of the more important steps whereby a fascinating literary form has become what it is through modifications in structure and content. The apparent law that has governed these changes is the same as is operative in all literary development: the principle of action and reaction in the ordinary acceptation of the terms. This law has a psychological basis. We are by nature both realists and idealists, delighting in the long run about equally in the representation of life somewhat as it is and as it is dreamed to be. There is accordingly no time in which art does not to some extent minister to both instincts of human nature. But in one period the ideal is in ascendency; in another the real. Why this is so we have not far to seek. Idealism in course of time falls into unendurable exorbitancies; realism likewise offends by its brutality and cynicism. It embodies what is most enduring in thought, and records what is best worth remembering in deeds. A people may be conquered it may lose its individuality; it may change its religion, its govern ment, its soil but so long as its literature remains, its growth and development, its rise and fall, its character and genius continue objects of interest and teach a les son to all who wish to be instructed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Novel IT is somewhat curious that there is, so far as I know, no complete handling in English of the subject of this volume, popular and important though that subject has been. Dunlop's History of Fiction, an excellent book, dealt with a much wider matter, and perforce ceased its dealing just at the beginning of the most abundant and brilliant development of the English division. Sir Walter Raleigh's Englirb Novel, a book of the highest value for acute criticism and grace of style, stops short at Miss Austen, and only glances, by a sort of anticipation, at Scott. The late Mr. Sidney Lanier's Englirb Novel and tbe Principle of its Development is really nothing but a lauda tory study of George Eliot, with glances at other writers, including violent denunciations of the great eighteenth century men. There are numerous monographs on parts of the subject: but nothing else that I know even attempt ing the whole. I should, of course, have liked to deal with so large a matter in a larger space: but one may and should cultivate the garden even if it is not a garden of many acres in extent. I need only add that I have endeavoured. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Novel: Being a Short Sketch of Its History From the Earliest Times to the Appearance of Waverley This is a little book on a great subject. Its aim is critical and historical; to furnish studies of the work of the chief English novelists before Scott, connected by certain general lines of reasoning and speculation on the nature and development of the novel. Much material has been omitted, and many works silently passed over, in the effort to attain a fair perspective and a reasonable continuity of treatment within a narrow compass. I much regret that my limited opportunities of access to a great library forbid my attempting a bibliography of the English Novel. Such a work would be the best companion to the present history. My warmest thanks are due to Mr. John Sampson, librarian of University College, Liverpool, for many valuable criticisms, and for the gift of an index.
