Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the Construction of the Pianoforte in America In order to understand more comprehensively and sympathetical-l ly the history of the American pianoforte, knowledge of the heri tage bequeathed to the early American inventors is necessary. The precursors of the pianoforte divide themselves into four groups. The monochord, the first of this series, was an instrument used by Pythagoras (582 b.c.) for experiments in the mathematical relation of musical sounds. A single string, presumably catgut, was strung over a wooden box. Directly underneath the string a strip of paper was glued to the top of the box, on which the sections and subdivisions corresponding with the intervals of the scale were marked. The monochord came into universal use among the Greeks, and also in the Roman churches as an instrument to sound the key note for chorus singing. To assure a quicker and more correct ih tonation, Guido d'arrezzo (about 1100 a.d.) used a movable bridge under the string of the monochord, After this invention, further improvements came rapidly. The clavis or keys were applied to the monochord, which then was built with more than one string. Each clavis or key had a tangent or pricker. As soon as the clavis was pressed down, this tangent would prick the string on the proper divisions of the scale, and cause the sounding of the correct tone. The use of the clavis soon led to an increase in the number of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pianoforte, Its Origin, Progress, and Construction: With Some Account of Instruments of the Same Class Which Preceded It; Viz, the Clavichord, the Virginal, the Spinet, the Harpsichord, Etc Amongst the entire range of musical instruments, there is not one, in our day, that possesses so many claims to notice as the Pianoforte - the "household orchestra" of the people. Although it was the birth only of the last century, there have existed, for hundreds of years, instruments which, under different appellations, resembled the Pianoforte in the more important features of construction. Those instruments are but little known to the artist; scarcely, if at all, to the public. But the spirit of enquiry which marks the present ago demands some explanation of those musical fabrics upon which so many of our eminent musicians exercised their mechanical skill, and for which they composed strains which arc listened to with pleasure, even in these days of improvement The history of the Pianoforte has never been attempted on any scale at all commensurate with its interest or importance. Brief, unsatisfactory, and incorrect notices are indeed to be found; but those have only served to lead the enquirer into a net of inaccurate data, or a maze of wild conjecture. Nevertheless, some articles are to be found which must, to a certain extent be exempt from the general stigma; and amongst them the following, all of which have been used in the course of the following pages. M. Fetis's Sketch of the History of the Pianoforte and of Pianists, originally printed in the Revue Musicale, and afterwards partly translated (the translation was left unfinished) in The Harmonicon for 1830-1, a valuable periodical, edited by the late Mr. W. Ayrton. The late Professor Fischhof's Versuch einer Geshichte des Clavierbaues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Piano Came to Be From the dried sinews stretched across the shell of a dead tortoise to the concert-grand piano of the present day is a far flight. Yet to this primitive source, it is said, may be traced the evolution of the stringed instrument which reached its culmination in the piano. The latter has been aptly called the household orchestra, and in tracing its origin one must go far back into the annals of the past. If we accept the Bible as history, and it is the greatest of all histories, the stringed instrument is of very ancient date. It is recorded that the ambassadors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pianoforte and Its Music If, now, I were asked to give a brief but com prehensive definition of the pianoforte, whose or igin, growth, and present status are to occupy our attention in the first large subdivision of this study, I should say that it is an instrument of music the tones of which are generated by strings set in vibration by blows delivered by hammers controlled by a keyboard, the mechanism of which is so adjusted that the force of the blow and the dynamic intensity of the resultant tone are meas urably at the command of the player. Also that it has a sound-board, or resonance-box, to augment the tone after its creation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
