Since the material for this volume was gath ered, admirable guides to the sources in England have been published by Professor Andrews and Miss Daven port. It is unnecessary, therefore, to enlarge here upon their nature. In the bibliographical note I have listed the principal sources which in the footnotes are indicated only by abbreviations. With a deep sense of gratitude I acknowledge the painstaking care with which Professor Charles M. Andrews has read my manuscript and proof and ofiered valuable criticisms. For suggestions from Professor Wilbur C. Abbott also I am very thankful. To Mr. Hubert Hall and other archivists in England I am deeply indebted for access to manuscripts. Professor Herbert L. Osgood's kindly interest in my work from time to time has been a great encouragement. No one who has recently attempted the investigation of colonial history can fail to pay tribute to the careful guidance of Mr. George L. Beer, whose books are models of historical scholarship. Above all, I feel profoundly indebted to two great and beloved teachers, now deceased - Edward Gaylord Bourne and Guy Stevens Callender. To them is owing very largely whatever contribution to early American history this volume may contain. And finally. Book excerpt: This study deals with the economic and political impact of the American War of Independence (1775-1783) on the development of the British West Indian colonies. On the basis of extensive archival material and statistical data, the author demonstrates that the American Revolution not only cut off the British West Indies from its main source of food and plantation supplies, but also sparked a continuous fall in the production of sugar and other staples, leading to the economic decline of the sugar colonies at the end of the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: This volume looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region, depending upon their methods of interpretation and differing styles of communicating their findings. The chapters discussing methodology are followed by studies of particular themes of historiography. The second half of the volume describes the writing of history in the individual territories, taking into account changes in society, economy and political structure. The final section is a full and detailed bibliography serving not only as a guide to the volume but also as an invaluable reference for the General History of the Caribbcan as a whole.

Book excerpt: Ryden challenges conventional wisdom regarding the political and economic motivations behind the final decision to abolish the British slave trade in 1807. His research illustrates that a faltering sugar economy after 1799 tipped the scales in favour of the abolitionist argument and helped secure the passage of abolition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were 26—not 13—British colonies in America in 1776. Of these, the six colonies in the Caribbean—Jamaica, Barbados, the Leeward Islands, Grenada and Tobago, St. Vincent; and Dominica—were among the wealthiest. These island colonies were closely related to the mainland by social ties and tightly connected by trade. In a period when most British colonists in North America lived less than 200 miles inland and the major cities were all situated along the coast, the ocean often acted as a highway between islands and mainland rather than a barrier. The plantation system of the islands was so similar to that of the southern mainland colonies that these regions had more in common with each other, some historians argue, than either had with New England. Political developments in all the colonies moved along parallel tracks, with elected assemblies in the Caribbean, like their mainland counterparts, seeking to increase their authority at the expense of colonial executives. Yet when revolution came, the majority of the white island colonists did not side with their compatriots on the mainland. A major contribution to the history of the American Revolution, An Empire Divided traces a split in the politics of the mainland and island colonies after the Stamp Act Crisis of 1765-66, when the colonists on the islands chose not to emulate the resistance of the patriots on the mainland. Once war came, it was increasingly unpopular in the British Caribbean; nonetheless, the white colonists cooperated with the British in defense of their islands. O'Shaughnessy decisively refutes the widespread belief that there was broad backing among the Caribbean colonists for the American Revolution and deftly reconstructs the history of how the island colonies followed an increasingly divergent course from the former colonies to the north.
