Book excerpt: Generals Lewis Walt, Raymond Davis, and Lieutenant General Victor Krulak had highly successful Marine Corps careers beginning with their commissioning in the 1930s. The purpose of this monograph is to examine their development as young officers from pre-commissioning until they assumed battalion command and to identify common trends potentially applicable to the Marine Corps officer procurement and development system today. The methodology for this study included a review of the officers' Official Marine Corps personal records, interviews, and a document search at the United States Marine Corps' Archives, History Division and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The research examines the pre-commissioning education, activities and experiences of each officer prior to joining the Marine Corps, their wide and varied experiences as young officers in the operational forces, and the impact of mentorship on the officers' early careers. The officers commissioned in the 1930s benefited from several characteristics that are different from today's newly commissioned officers. First, they had a wide range of experiences prior to commissioning, including military experience in the Reserve Officer Training Corps or the National Guard. Second, their first tours in the operating forces provided them with a multitude of opportunities to lead Marines both in the United States and abroad. Finally, due to the small size of the officer corps, and the nature of the service, a very active, yet informal mentoring network not only guided the young officers, but also provided them opportunities. This monograph contains three specific recommendations for the Marine Corps in the development of junior officers. First, the Marine Corps needs to improve the formal aspects of developing junior officers through a refocus and re-emphasis of the Supplemental MOS program and an implementation of a pathway for young officers to observe units in action prior to them assuming their first operational billet. Second, formalize and incorporate a program to expose young officers to the responsibilities and duties from marines who are veterans of the current environment. Third, increase the senior officers' and staff non-commissioned officers' education and awareness of the importance of mentoring to the development of junior officers and encourage the development of meaningful mentoring relationships between the junior and senior officers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the multi-faceted phenomenon of Finnish military effectiveness in the Winter War (1939–40). Drawing on a wide array of primary and secondary sources, Pasi Tuunainen shows how by focusing on their own strengths and pitting these against the weaknesses of their adversary, the Finns were able to inflict heavy casualties on the Red Army whilst minimizing their own losses. The Finns were able to use their resources for effective operational purposes, and perform almost to their full potential. The Finnish small-unit tactics utilized the terrain and Arctic conditions for which they had prepared themselves, as well as forming cohesive units of well-motivated and qualitatively better professional leaders and citizen soldiers who could innovate and adapt. The Finnish Army had highly effective logistics, support and supply systems that kept the troops fighting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world today there are obvious trouble spots that have the potential to explode into serious conflicts at any time in the immediate or distant future. This study examines what history suggests about the future possibilities and characteristics of war and the place that thinking about conflict deserves in the formation of American strategy in coming decades. The author offers a historical perspective to show that armed conflict between organized political groups has been mankind's constant companion and that America must remain prepared to use its military power to deal with an unstable, uncertain, and fractious world.Williamson Murray shows that while there are aspects of human conflict that will not change no matter what advances in technology or computing power may occur, the character of war appears to be changing at an increasingly rapid pace with scientific advances providing new and more complex weapons, means of production, communications, and sensors, and myriad other inventions, all capable of altering the character of the battle space in unexpected fashions. He explains why the past is crucial to understanding many of the possibilities that lie in wait, as well as for any examination of the course of American strategy and military performance in the future—and warns that the moral and human results of the failure of American politicians and military leaders to recognize the implications of the past are already apparent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Board of the Navy, in existence from 1900 to 1950, was a uniquely American and unparalleled strategic planning organization. As John T. Kuehn shows, this was the United States' first modern general staff in peacetime, as well as the nexus for naval thought and strategic thinking. The Board's creation reflected the reformist spirit of the era that also gave birth to the Army War College, the Army General Staff, and the Chief of Naval Operations. As such, the General Board and its mission also reflected an attempt to reconcile the primacy of civilian control of the military with an increasing need for more formal military and naval planning establishments, processes, and methods. Thus the General Board's very name reflected the idea shared by both corporate America and naval tradition that challenges and problems could be met with special, temporary organizational bodies. By the 1920s the General Board had become a permanent feature of the Navy and was regarded as the premier strategic "think tank" for advice to the Secretary of the Navy. Evolving over the course of its existence, the Board developed into a bona fide institutional component atop the service's hierarchy. Kuehn highlights how this small body, wielding immense influence over the span of its organizational life, was an innovative, progressive, and productive force for the security of the United States in peace and for naval success in war. The service of the men comprising the Board is little known, but their collaborative ethos should serve as a model for their modern counterparts. Kuehn's organizational history of the General Board provides context on the complexities and turbulence involved in building the modern Navy that transitioned over time from coal and sail to nuclear-powered warships. America's First General Staff offers the first single-volume history of the General Board of the Navy, as well as an analysis of the U.S. Navy during periods of great change in both peace and war.
