Book excerpt: Published in the 50th anniversary year of the landmark Title IX gender equity legislation becoming law, "The Right Thing to Do" is both a chronicle of the rise of women's intercollegiate athletics in the United States and a biography of one of the movement's leaders, Kit Saunders-Nordeen, the first director of women's athletics at the University of Wisconsin and vice president of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). When Kit arrived on the Madison campus for graduate school in 1964, competitive athletics for women was actively discouraged. The longtime director of women's physical education at UW-Madison, Blanche Trilling, had been a national voice in advocating participation, but never competition, for women collegians. Across the next decade, Kit changed hearts and minds, establishing a vibrant non-varsity women's sports program at UW. It took some doing. Funds for travel and uniforms were so scarce the athletes sold Christmas trees and did odd jobs to help. The passage of Title IX in 1972 - requiring universities receiving federal funds to not discriminate by gender - provided a boost. Kit was named the UW's first director of women's intercollegiate athletics in 1974, signaling varsity status for women. But Title IX was not a panacea. In 1979, seven years after it became law, the UW women's crew famously changed clothes outside men's athletic director Elroy Hirsch's office because they still didn't have a locker room. A short time later, as women's programs continued to grow, the NCAA - having ignored women's athletics for years - moved to usurp the AIAW, resulting in a bitter battle. Against this backdrop of administrative struggle and intrigue, the young women athletes shined. UW produced celebrated stars like Carie Graves (crew) and Cindy Bremser (track), while earning early national championships in crew and cross-country. The public took notice. In 1990, a women's volleyball match in Madison drew nearly 11,000 fans. Kit Saunders-Nordeen watched that match from the stands with tears in her eyes. Her story, alongside the larger narrative of women intercollegiate athletes refusing to be denied and emerging triumphant, will stir any reader who cares about sports and fair play - on and off the field. As Judy Sweet, the first woman president of the NCAA, who as a student was mentored by Kit in Madison, writes in the book's foreword: "We must remain vigilant and ensure that our daughters have the same opportunities and support as our sons."

The publication of the yearbook did not become annual until 1887, as such there are no yearbooks for 1885 or 1886. The only other interruption in yearbooks was for the years 1973 and 1974. There are still yearbooks from these years, but they were published by the Wisconsin Alumni Association rather than the student body, as such they are spare, consisting mostly of portraits of students. UW Archives currently holds at least one copy of every published volume. The 1st copy of each volume is held onsite at UW Archives while the second and third copies, where they exist, are held offsite.

Female physical educators were among the key experts who influenced this revolution. Drawing on extensive archival research, this book examines the ideas, experiences, and instructional programs of white and black female physical educators who taught in public schools and diverse colleges and universities, including coed and single-sex, public and private, and predominantly white or black institutions. Working primarily with female students, women physical educators had to consider what an active female could and should do in comparison to an active male. Applying concepts of sex differences, they debated the implications of female anatomy, physiology, reproductive functions, and psychosocial traits for achieving gender parity in the gym. Teachers' interpretations were contingent on where they worked and whom they taught. They also responded to broad historical conditions, including developments in American feminism, law, and education, society's changing attitudes about gender, race, and sexuality, and scientific controversies over the nature and significance of sex differences. While deliberating fairness for female students, white and black women physical educators also pursued equity for themselves, as their workplaces and nascent profession often marginalized female and minority personnel. Questions of difference and equity divided the field throughout the twentieth century; while some women teachers favored moderate views and incremental change, others promoted justice for their students and themselves by exerting authority at their schools, critiquing traditional concepts of "difference," and devising innovative curricula. Book excerpt: During the early 1930s, Dorothy Louise Anderson became the first woman to compete in intercollegiate athletics at what was then the Pennsylvania State College. She played on the varsity mens tennis team, earning a letter and graduating in 1935. She later had a notable career as an amateur tennis player, including winning the Wisconsin womens tennis championship in 1942. Almost three decades after Anderson played for the Nittany Lions, the university began their womens varsity program in 1964 as part of the old Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. This paper explores Andersons career at Penn State in an effort to determine whether she was aberrationthe only woman to have competed in intercollegiate sport before the development of womens varsity teams in the 1960sor a harbinger of future developments in womens sports at Penn State.There are a series of questions addressed throughout the paper regarding Dorothy Anderson, a woman that played on the mens varsity tennis team in the 1930s, including: Who is Dorothy Anderson, and why was she the first woman at Penn State to pioneer the intercollegiate sport? Is Dorothy Anderson unique, or, were there were women similar to her around the country at other universities? The main source of information regarding Ms. Anderson is from the Penn State archives, as it holds the majority of the information about her time at Penn State. That information includes publications from local newspapers, yearbooks, and any other samples written about her from her time at Penn State. Additionally, research was pulled from major publications such as the New York Times, Pittsburgh Gazette, and Philadelphia Inquirer. The archives of other universities were also utilized with the assistance of the archivists working there. There has also been a great deal of research and facts about other women competing on mens teams and at other universities across the country. Although Dorothy Anderson was not the only person to compete on a mens varsity team, she was one of the earliest to do so, with only a few athletes coming before her. Through her success on the tennis court, Dorothy Anderson was able to thrive and pave the way for women across the university. Further, she was able to alter traditional views of women in sport based upon her successful performances and poise on the tennis court while playing men. This change extended beyond just Penn State to other universities, especially ones that she played at and in which she caused controversy. Intriguingly, Penn State mens tennis coach, Dink Stover, recruited her for the squad.The paper, as a whole, will give a background on womens sport and athletics and the development of the views on women in sport. It then delves into some of the history around womens sport in the Big Ten to give a bit further background. After that, the paper looks at women across the country that have competed on mens teams before the passing of Title IX. Finally, the paper arrives at Dorothy Anderson the center of the paper. Though she was not the only woman to compete on a mens team, she was one of very few, and she was one that was very successful.Dorothy Anderson, through her success playing against men at the varsity level, had an impact on views of women in sport, especially in the Penn State community. Through her nearly perfect season, she was able to show that women are able to compete with men and deserve a chance to compete, even nearly forty years before the passing of Title IX. Still, it took nearly three decades for Penn State to create a varsity womens tennis team. Andersons career opens windows into how women challenged male domination of intercollegiate sport and reveals that even highly successful pioneering efforts did not bear fruit until many decades of struggle had transpired.
