Book excerpt: Visible chemical laser amplifiers have been generated in select wavelength regions near 527, 492, and 460 nm employing the highly efficient and selective formation of sodium dimer electronically excited states from the sodium trimer-halogen atom (x=C1, Br, I) reactions. With a focus to increasing amplifier gain length and amplifying medium concentration, an extended path length slit source device has been constructed which created intersecting alkali ahd halogen sheaths forming the basis for the development of a visible chemical laser oscillator. This device has now revealed the first Raman pumping resulting entirely from a chemical reaction, the process being observed in the absence of an external light source. Extrapolations on the Na3-X amplifier concept involving Group IIA metal - F, CI reactions are considered. Very near resonant energy transfers from selectively formed metastable states of SiO to receptor alkali atoms form sodium or potassium atom laser amplifiers, resulting in a gain condition at lambda = 569, 616, 819, and 581 mm.

Book excerpt: The rapid development of lasers in the past few decades has led to their application in almost every field of science and technology. The idea that it should be possible to convert the energy released in chemical reactions of chemical lasers directly into coherent radiation resulted in the advent in the 1960s. These first chemical lasers, however, consumed much more energy to initiate the reaction than they emitted. The search for more ef ficient chemical lasing led to the utilization of chain reactions. However, care had to be taken to maintain the appropriate pressure. In 1970, it was demonstrated that the operation of chemical lasers at atmospheric pressure was also feasible, making it easier and cheaper to construct them. One of the advantages of chemical lasers is the wide range of radia tion wavelengths emitted by them: 1.3 - 26 ~m. The vibrational frequen cies of many molecules fall within this range so that they may convenient ly be used for the operation of such lasers. Progress in the development of chemical lasers is intimately con nected with advances in related fields such as gas dynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, and research into the energy relaxation and transfer processes in molecular systems.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased capabilities in remote sensing, communication and several other areas depend on developments in laser technology. Chemical lasers indicate a high probability of fulfilling these needs through their properties of different wavelengths, high power, high operating efficiency and lower weight. Additionally, optically pumped metal dimers are attractive systems for visible, tunable gas lasers. The development of new improved chemical laser systems and optically pumped laser systems requires an increased understanding and knowledge of the properties and characteristics of candidate reactions and molecules. Detailed spectroscopic studies on both CuF and Ca2 have been carried out. Use of laser photoluminescence has produced spectroscopic information previously unobtainable. We have obtained improved molecular constants and dissociation energies, radiative lifetimes, and quenching cross-sections for electronically excited products. In addition previously unknown electronic states have been identified.
Book Synopsis Selective Chemical Pumping of Electronic States and Formation and Deactivation Processes in Electronic Transition Chemically Pumped Lasers by : James L. Gole

Gole and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of high temperature techniques are applied to the study of visible chemiluminescent phenomena over the pressure range .000001 to 100 torr in order to assess the applicability of several reaction systems for the development of visible Chemicals lasers. Efforts have focused on selective formation of excited electronic states, the nature of electronic state interactions and the behavior of these states over a wide pressure range. In studying chemiluminescent spectra, efforts have concentrated on the determination of activation energies for excited state formation, the determination of excited state quantum yields, the determination of approximate radiative lifetimes for long-lived states, the assessment of rapid energy transfer routes among excited electronic states and the analysis of collisional quenching. Promising systems have been and are being explored in an exploding wire laser system. (Author).
