Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As demonstrated by the contributions in this volume, the domain of superconducting and low-temperature devices is in a rapidly expanding phase. Interactions between materials sciences, low-temperature physics, astrophysics, nuclear and particle physics have provided the incentive for new experiments, which could ultimately record such rare interactions as double beta decay, neutrino scattering, or collisions of the elusive dark matter halo particles. The theoretical and experimental improvements achieved during the last year have been impressive. Detection of 60 keV resolution with a non-zero spin material as a target seems therefore realizable in the near future. Similarly, impressive achievements on ballistic phonons detection and superheated superconducting detectors have been presented, together with reliable techniques for developing ultra low noise electronics required by these ambitious experiments. Apart from the contributions presented during the symposium, the two original papers by Niinikoski proposing the use of bolometers as particle detectors have been included in this volume. These papers, despite their current interest, have never been published before. The comprehensive style of the papers will appeal to specialists and non-specialists alike, in particular solid-state physicists will find the volume of considerable interest, as the field of materials research continues to benefit from the type of work presented here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.

Book Synopsis Low Temperature Detectors for Neutrinos and Dark Matter by : Klaus Pretzl
Download or read book Low Temperature Detectors for Neutrinos and Dark Matter written by Klaus Pretzl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last few years astrophysicists and elementary particle physicists have been working jointly on the following fascinating phenomena: 1. The solar neutrino puzzle and the question: What happens to the neutrinos on their way from the sun to the earth? 2. The growing evidence that our universe is filled with about 10 times more matter than is visible and the question: What is dark matter made of? 3. The supernovae explosions and the question: What do neutrinos tell us about such explosions and vice versa? The experimental investigation of these phenomena is difficult and involves unconventional techniques. These are presently under development, and bring together such seemingly disparate disciplines as astrophysics and elementary particle physics on the one hand and superconductivity and solid-state physics on the other. This book contains the proceedings of a workshop held in March 1987 at which the above subjects and their experimental investigation were discussed. The proposed experimental methods are very new. They involve frontier developments in low temperature and solid-state physics. The book should be useful to researchers and students who actively work on these subjects or plan to enter the field. It also offers the non-expert reader with some physics background a good survey of the activities in this field.

Book Synopsis Low-Dimensional Superconductivity for Single-Photon Detection in Strong Magnetic Fields by : Tomas Polakovic
Download or read book Low-Dimensional Superconductivity for Single-Photon Detection in Strong Magnetic Fields written by Tomas Polakovic and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconducting nanowire detectors are a very prominent technology in fields that require single-photon detection with very high efficiency, such as quantum computing and communication or nanophotonics. Their high detection rates and unsurpassed timing precision would also make them ideal candidates for detector technology in other fields, such as nuclear and high energy physics. Typical collider experiments, however, operate in much more extreme conditions than most quantum optics setups. One of the main roadblocks for transforming superconducting nanowire photon detectors into superconducting nanowire particle detectors was the question of their performance in strong magnetic fields. In this work, I present the results of developing a novel thin film deposition method called Ion Beam Assisted Sputtering, which allowed me to grow superconducting Niobium Nitride films with upper critical fields as high as 32 T and study their microstructural and electromagnetic properties. As the nanowires are detectors with extremely small sizes, I also explore the nature of the suppression of the superconducting state in ultra-thin films. I propose two possible explanations for this phenomenon, one based on confinement of the BCS condensate, and the other on weak localization and competition between two strongly correlated electronic phases. Finally, I use this technology to fabricate superconducting nanowire single photon detectors capable of detection in fields as high as 5 T, currently the highest field at which nanowire detectors are known to operate. This result demonstrates the potential viability of the technology for nuclear and high energy physics, and is an important stepping stone to developing novel particle detectors.
Book Synopsis History of Original Ideas and Basic Discoveries in Particle Physics by : Harvey B. Newman

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on the History of Original Ideas and Basic Discoveries, held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily, July 27-August 4, 1994, brought together sixty of the leading scientists including many Nobel Laureates in high energy physics, principal contributors in other fields of physics such as high Tc superconductivity, particle accelerators and detector instrumentation, and thirty-six talented younger physicists selected from candidates throughout the world. The scientific program, including 49 lectures and a discussion session on the "Status and Future Directions in High Energy Physics" was inspired by the conference theme: The key experimental discoveries and theoretical breakthroughs of the last 50 years, in particle physics and related fields, have led us to a powerful description of matter in terms of three quark and three lepton families and four fundamental interactions. The most recent generation of experiments at e+e- and proton-proton colliders, and corresponding advances in theoretical calculations, have given us remarkably precise determinations of the basic parameters of the electroweak and strong interactions. These developments, while showing the striking internal consistency of the Standard Model, have also sharpened our view of the many unanswered questions which remain for the next generation: the origin and pattern of particle masses and families, the unification of the interactions including gravity, and the relation between the laws of physics and the initial conditions of the universe.
