Book excerpt: A review of the literature dealing with stressful life events reveals that little work has been undertaken in this field dealing solely with adolescents, and indeed the majority of studies undertaken have been conducted in Amercia. The aim of the present study was to design an Anglicized version of the Yeaworth (1980) Adolescent Life Change Event Questionnaire, and determine life events that are considered stressful by adolescents. A 39 item questionnaire was thus developed, adapted fram the Yeaworth (1980) scale, and administered to 333 school students in Great Britain. The data frcm the study was collated and statistically analyzed and a check-list of life events that adolescents considered stressfull, emerged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Stress is the definitive resource for health and social scientists interested in assessing stress in humans. With contributions from leading experts, this work provides for the first time a unified conceptual overview of the intricate relationship between stress and a variety of disorders. Its interdisciplinary approach to the selection of appropriate environmental, psychological, and biological measures includes comprehensive evaluations and practical advice regarding a wide range of measurement approaches. For environmental stress, techniques such as checklists and interviews that measure life event, daily event, and chronic stress are discussed. An analysis of psychological measurements includes methods for assessing stress appraisal and affective response. Neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, and immune measures are examined as important biological stress assessments. Contributors also uncover the conceptual underpinnings of each approach as well as the various costs and benefits of available assessment techniques. Reflecting the diversity of theoretical conceptions of stress, Measuring Stress masterfully provides integrative, incisive guidelines that will prove invaluable to students, clinicians, and researchers in health and social psychology, medicine, nursing, epidemiology, sociology, and psychiatry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depending on the definition of this concept that is adopted, adolescence is the narrow threshold or a vast no-man's land that separates adulthood from childhood. In one -physica1ist- view, adolescence begins when secondary sex characters become noticeable and ends when they are fully developed. In another -socio1ogica1- view, adolescence ends when social independence has been gained. It may easily take many years more to span the interval between those two events. In this collection of papers by specialists from various disciplines, physical, psychological and social aspects of adolescence are considered. The book originates from a postgraduate course for medical practitioners, who deal with adolescents, but the range of the papers is such that we hope it may be of value to a much wider readership, including educators and all who are concerned with adolescents. The course was entitled: 'Adolescence: psychological, social and biological aspects', and was held in Leiden in November 1981. It was the fourth in a series of Boerhaave Courses instigated by the Dutch Growth Foundation of available. which a published record has now become Previous titles are 'Somatic growth of the child' (1966), 'De samenstel1ing van het mense1ijk 1ichaam' (1968) (=Human body composition), and 'Normal and abnormal development of brain and behaviour' (1971). VI The detailed programme of the course was planned by Dr. F.J. Bekker, Prof. Dr. J.L. van den Brande, Prof. Dr. W. Everaerd, Prof. A.Th. Schweizer and Prof. Dr. J.J. van der Werff ten Bosch.

Book excerpt: Psychologists have long been interested in the problems of children, but in the last 20 years this interest has increased dramatically. The in tensified focus on clinical child psychology reflects an increased belief that many adult problems have their origin in childhood and that early treatment is often more effective than treatment at later ages, but it also seems to reflect an increased feeling that children are inherently important in their own right. As a result of this shift in emphasis, the number of publications on this topic has multiplied to the extent that even full-time specialists have not been able to keep abreast of all new developments. Researchers in the more basic fields of child psychol ogy have a variety of annual publications and journals to integrate research in their areas, but there is a marked need for such an integra tive publication in the applied segment of child and developmental psychology. Advances in Clinical Child Psychology is a serial publication designed to bring together original summaries of the most important developments each year in the field. Each chapter is written by a key figure in an innovative area of research or practice or by an individual who is particularly well qualified to comment on a topic of major contemporary importance. Each author has followed the stan dard format in which his or her area of research was reviewed and the clinical implications of the studies were made explicit.

They argue that the assumption that youth are automatically debilitated by this violence is too simplistic: effective care must include an awareness of motives and beliefs, roles they played in the conflict, relationships, et cetera.

Incorporating the latest Australian, British and American research it is an introduction to contemporary theory and issues in the study of child and adolescent development. Heavily illustrated and with a clear design, this sensitively written text is highly readable for students in several disciplines. Modelled on a highly successful first edition published in 1993, the text has been totally reconceptualised. A more thematic linking of materials in the text will allow both students and teachers to follow development either chronologically or thematically. Also, a life cycle approach to topics as they arise will be a very useful addition for many students. The text has an array of useful features, including definitions in the margins, a glossary, discussion questions and activities. Free online support is available, including multiple choice questions, a child observation manual, an easy student guide to research design and techniques, and worksheets. Please note the book no longer comes with a CD; all the CD content is now available via the Website.
