The first involves the commissioning of an extant but at the time, unproven bubbling fluidised bed fast pyrolysis unit. The unit was designed for an intended nominal throughput of 300 g/h of biomass. The unit came complete with solids separation, pyrolysis vapour quenching and oil collection systems. Modifications were carried out on various sections of the system including the reactor heating, quenching and liquid collection systems. The modifications allowed for fast pyrolysis experiments to be carried out at the appropriate temperatures. Bio-oil was generated using conventional biomass feedstocks including Willow, beechwood, Pine and Miscanthus. Results from this phase of the research showed however, that although the rig was capable of processing biomass to bio-oil, it was characterised by low mass balance closures and recurrent operational problems. The problems included blockages, poor reactor hydrodynamics and reduced organic liquid yields. The less than optimal performance of individual sections, particularly the feed and reactor systems of the rig, culminated in a poor overall performance of the system. The second phase of this research involved the redesign of two key components of the unit. An alternative feeding system was commissioned for the unit. The feed system included an off the shelf gravimetric system for accurate metering and efficient delivery of biomass. Similarly, a new bubbling fluidised bed reactor with an intended nominal throughput of 500g/h of biomass was designed and constructed. The design leveraged on experience from the initial commissioning phase with proven kinetic and hydrodynamic studies. These units were commissioned as part of the optimisation phase of the study. Also as part of this study, two varieties each, of previously unreported feedstocks namely Jatropha curcas and Moringa olifiera oil seed press cakes were characterised to determine their suitability as feedstocks for liquid fuel production via fast pyrolysis. Consequently, the feedstocks were used for the production of pyrolysis liquids. The quality of the pyrolysis liquids from the feedstocks were then investigated via a number of analytical techniques. The oils from the press cakes showed high levels of stability and reduced pH values. The improvements to the design of the fast pyrolysis unit led to higher mass balance closures and increased organic liquid yields. The maximum liquid yield obtained from the press cakes was from African Jatropha press cake at 66 wt% on a dry basis.

Book excerpt: "In places like Quebec, with a long winter, the use of fossil fuels for heating applications, besides emitting large amounts of GHGs, has also brought economic problems to greenhouse owners because of its high cost over long periods of time. It is therefore imperative to develop a biofuel, such as pyrolytic oil, that can be used in heating boilers at a lower environmental and economic cost. A standard (ASTM D7544) has been developed to regulate the quality of pyrolytic oil or bio-oil to be used in stationary combustion systems. One of the main parameters established is the water content in the oil, since this can influence other properties of the bio-oil such as viscosity, calorific value, density, and acidity. The aim of this doctoral research project was to produce a pyrolytic oil capable of being used in heating applications and to offer the first step towards the chemical extraction process, by analyzing and evaluating the chemical composition of the feedstock, the operating conditions under which the pyrolysis is performed, and the type of condensation system used to collect the bio-oil. A semi-pilot vertical auger pyrolysis reactor designed by IRDA and CRIQ was selected as the technology to produce bio-oil, using black spruce as feedstock given its high availability in Quebec. As a first stage, the effect of the operational variables of the fast pyrolysis on the water content in the oil as well as its yield was studied. Four variables were selected from literature review and preliminary experiments. As a result, the optimal conditions obtained allowed the production of a bio-oil with one of the lowest water contents (16.8 wt.%) and dissolved solids content (0.1 wt.%) published for auger reactors.The second stage was the combination of the microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MHT) pre-treatment with the optimal operational variables of fast pyrolysis obtained previously, aiming to evaluate and optimize the effect of this treatment on the quality of the hydrochar and, consequently, on the quality of the bio-oil. The optimization of this pre-treatment was targeted to minimize both hemicellulose and ash content responses. As a result, the pretreated biomass or hydrochar at optimal conditions showed a significant decrease in the ash content by 58% and 12.5% in the content of hemicellulose. By pyrolyzing this hydrochar, a higher total bio-oil yield was obtained, which increased by 24% and a reduction of 35% in moisture content (10.5 wt.%) was achieved.Finally, the third stage of this research consisted of the design and evaluation of a fractional condensation system. Two and three stages of condensation were evaluated with a decreasing temperature profile to assess the condensation efficiency with respect to the number of stages and temperatures used. The results showed an increase in condensation efficiency of 35% by adding the third condensation stage. Overall, statistical optimization models were obtained that predict the values of the most critical biomass variables and pyrolytic operating conditions that affect bio-oil quality, which can be replicated for different types of biomass. It also offers effective methods for the separation of bio-oil into different fractions, which would serve as a first step in the extraction of chemicals of interest"--

Book excerpt: This work aimed to develop a carbon-based solid acid catalyst derived from renewable biomass resources for the catalytic pyrolysis process. The sulfonated activated carbon (SAC) was effectively used as a catalyst to directly convert lignocellulosic biomass to produce high-value liquid products in a single-step process. The SAC was synthesized via microwave carbonization of phosphoric acid-activated corncob followed by sulfuric acid sulfonation. The activation and carbonization processes were carried out to develop micropores and mesopores on the carbon structure. The presence of micro- and mesopores was beneficial for the accommodation of the intermediate compounds of different molecular sizes from the biomass pyrolysis to react within the pore openings of the SAC. In addition, the sulfonation treatment facilitated the integration of acid sites on the catalyst surface to enhance the catalyst activity and selectivity, enabling the production of abundant target compounds. Lower sulfonation temperature can lead to higher SO3H density, which in turn increases the selectivity of bio-jet fuel range hydrocarbons from catalytic co-pyrolysis of Douglas fir (DF) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The SAC promoted the conversion of guaiacols and furans intermediates to form phenolics that led to the production of highly phenolic bio-oil from the catalytic pyrolysis of DF. Further, SAC was an effective catalyst for catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic for the selective production of bio-jet fuel range hydrocarbons (aromatics and C8-C16 alkanes) in the oil phase bio-oil and phenolic compounds (phenols and methylphenols) in the aqueous phase bio-oil. The SAC promoted the catalytic cracking of the long-chain polymers of the LDPE and possible interaction of DF-derived compounds and LDPE-derived olefins via Diels-Alder reaction, rearrangement, cracking, dehydration, and aromatization reactions to produce bio-oil with improved quality. Kinetic studies showed that SAC addition enhanced the reaction rate of DF thermal degradation but may require higher activation energy. On the other hand, SAC had a positive catalytic effect in LDPE decomposition as evidenced by the reduction in activation energy, suggesting its potential application in the catalytic pyrolysis of plastics.

Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is the demonstration and development of a novel biomass pyrolysis technology for the production of a stable bio-oil. The approach is to carry out catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) and upgrading together with pyrolysis in a single fluidized bed reactor with a unique two-level design that permits the physical separation of the two processes. The hydrogen required for the HDO will be generated in the catalytic section by the water-gas shift reaction employing recycled CO produced from the pyrolysis reaction itself. Thus, the use of a reactive recycle stream is another innovation in this technology. The catalysts will be designed in collaboration with BASF Catalysts LLC (formerly Engelhard Corporation), a leader in the manufacture of attrition-resistant cracking catalysts. The proposed work will include reactor modeling with state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics in a supercomputer, and advanced kinetic analysis for optimization of bio-oil production. The stability of the bio-oil will be determined by viscosity, oxygen content, and acidity determinations in real and accelerated measurements. A multi-faceted team has been assembled to handle laboratory demonstration studies and computational analysis for optimization and scaleup.
