Book excerpt: The need for sustainable energy use has motivated the exploration of renewable alternative fuels and fuel conversion technology on a global scale. Fuel cells, which convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy with high efficiency and low emissions, provide a promising strategy for achieving energy sustainability. The current progress in fuel cell commercialization is mainly in portable and stationary applications, but fuel cell technology for transportation applications, which make up a substantial portion of the global energy market, have seen little commercial success. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have high potential for addressing the future energy needs of the transportation energy sector. However, one of the prevailing limitations of the PEMFC is the availability of high-performance, cost-effective electrolyte materials. These materials may be realized in the near future by developing multi-functional polymer blends targeted at specific performance capabilities. Due to the near-infinite possibilities of polymer combinations and processing techniques high-throughput polymer characterization techniques are necessary to effectively and systematically screen for optimal materials and relevant structure-property relationships. In this work, a high-throughput mass transport assay (HT-MTA) has been developed to characterize water flux and permeability at multiple sample locations in parallel. The functionality of HT-MTA was evaluated using standard Nafion® films and a model semi-interpenetrated polymer network with commercial polyvinylidine fluoride as the host matrix for a proprietary polyelectrolyte supplied by Arkema, Inc. To further demonstrate the utility of HT-MTA, the instrument was incorporated into the lab's current high-throughput characterization toolset and used to investigate the mechanisms and effects of rapid free radical degradation of Nafion® membranes based on various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and iron(II) sulfate in solution. The results have been used suggest the effects of these regent components on preferential degradation pathways and will prove to be useful in later simulating the membrane performance during in-situ fuel cell lifetime which is both time-intensive and costly. The high-throughput toolset was also used to develop a novel optimized blend consisting of polyetherimide (PEI), a low-cost high performance resin, and sulfonated PEI (S-PEI) made using a relatively mild post sulfonation reaction with trimethylsilyl chlorosulfonate. The effects of blend composition and thermal annealing on film performance were evaluated and the polymer system was shown to have optimal performance properties that should prove to be useful in other high-performance applications where mechanical strength is critical. In general, this work shows promising results for efficiently developing advanced polymer materials using high-throughput screening techniques.

Book excerpt: As alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFC) are regarded as promising and important energy devices, the development of high performance anion exchange membranes are in urgent need, as well as fundamental investigation on the structure-property relationship, which are the motivation of this dissertation. Three different polymer systems are presented and focused on polymer synthesis, material morphology, and ion transport phenomena. Crosslinked membranes are promising as practical materials, however, the understanding and further improvement of its performance is hindered by the lack of an ordered morphology or well-defined chemical structure. In Chapter 2, a series of crosslinked membranes were design to bear cationic groups organized via covalent linkages, which were synthesized by sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT), "click" chemistry, cast/crosslinking process, and solid state quaternization. Significant enhancement in conductivities was observed and presumably attributed to the formation of ion transport channels directed by polycation chains. Excellent membrane performance were observed, including conductivities, water diffusivities, and fuel cell power densities. In Chapter 3, phosphonium containing block copolymers were synthesized and subjected to morphology characterization. Using Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), it was observed that these materials form well-ordered morphologies upon solvent casting, and the ionic block preferred to form a continuous phase. By comparing the anion conductivities, the matrix in a hexagonal phase was proved to be more efficient in ion transport than lamellae. Polycyclooctene (PCOE) based triblock copolymers were synthesized in Chapter 4, by using a special chain transfer agent (CTA) to mediate Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT). The well-defined melting transition (~50 oC) of PCOE enabled the investigation of the thermal transition in hydrophobic block affecting ionic domain behavior. Then metal ion doped star block copolymers were investigated in bulk and thin film forms to demonstrate that the star block copolymer architecture can facilitate microphase separation and thus the preparation of smaller features. Using an ortho-nitrobenzyl ester junction, triblock copolymers based on PEO and PSt were synthesized and applied to hierarchical pattern fabrication in self-assembled thin films. During these studies, the single monomer insertion methodology was developed for high efficiency synthesis of (multi)functional RAFT CTAs. The molecular characterization and controlled polymerization results were documented in Chapter 7. The last chapter contains outlooks based on the research in this dissertation. Methods to improve the previously presented materials were listed. Also, fundamental questions were raised on ion transport membranes, and possible ways to answer them were provided. In addition, potential research directions are proposed.

Book excerpt: Proton exchange membrane Nafion® has been studied using current sensing atomic force microscopy to reveal ionic domains and the local ionic conductivity distribution in the membranes. It is found that the local conductivities are not correlated with the surface topography of the membranes. The local ionic conductivity in the membranes shows several peaks, peak position and peak width of the distribution change with relative humidity, The changes are interpreted as due to the increased sizes and organizations of hydrated clusters in the membranes and the tip effect. Analysis of the conductance distribution of Nafion membranes revealses the dimension and distribution of ionic clusters are very important to determine the structure of Nafion.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The overall objective of this study is to obtain the water transport characteristics of proton exchange membranes like Nafion at subzero temperatures for automotive applications. For this, three different properties of the membrane are quantified: water content, proton conductivity and diffusivity. Water content is computed from the difference in weight between the dry weight of the membrane and the weight of the membrane at each test condition. To quantify proton conductivity and water diffusivity, a test cell is designed and fabricated to measure the voltage across the membrane at test conditions. A three dimensional equation is developed for water content in terms of relative humidity and temperature. Equations for proton conductivity and water diffusion coefficient are presented in terms of water content and temperature. These equations are developed from experimental data obtained between -300C and 300C at different relative humidity.

Their development will take decades of extensive public and private effort to achieve technology breakthroughs and commercial maturity. Government research programs are indispensable for catalyzing the development process. This report maps the IEA countries' current efforts to research, develop and deploy the interlocking elements that constitute a "hydrogen economy", including CO2 capture and storage when hydrogen is produced out of fossil fuels. It provides an overview of what is being done, and by whom, covering an extensive complexity of national government R & D programs. The survey highlights the potential for exploiting the benefits of the international cooperation. This book draws primarily upon information contributed by IEA governments. In virtually all the IEA countries, important R & D and policy efforts on hydrogen and fuel cells are in place and expanding. Some are fully-integrated, government-funded programs, some are a key element in an overall strategy spread among multiple public and private efforts. The large amount of information provided in this publication reflects the vast array of technologies and logistics required to build the "hydrogen economy."--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: We present here the experimental and computational characterization of two novel copolyaramide proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with higher conductivity than Nafion at relatively high temperatures, good mechanical properties, high thermal stability, and the capability to operate in low humidity conditions. The random and block copolyaramide PEMs are found to possess different ion exchange capacities (IEC) in addition to subtle structural and morphological differences, which impact the stability and conductivity of the membranes. SAXS patterns indicate the ionomer peak for the dry block copolymer resides at q = 0.1 Å-1, which increases in amplitude when initially hydrated to 25% relative humidity, but then decrease in amplitude with additional hydration. This pattern is hypothesized to signal the transport of water into the polymer matrix resulting in a reduced degree of phase separation. Coupled to these morphological changes, the enhanced proton transport characteristics and structural/mechanical stability for the block copolymer are hypothesized to be primarily due to the ordered structure of ionic clusters that create connected proton transport pathways while reducing swelling upon hydration. Interestingly, the random copolymer did not possess an ionomer peak at any of the hydration levels investigated, indicating a lack of any significant ionomer structure. The random copolymer also demonstrated higher proton conductivity than the block copolymer, which is opposite to the trend normally seen in polymer membranes. However, it has reduced structural/mechanical stability as compared to the block copolymer. In conclusion, this reduction in stability is due to the random morphology formed by entanglements of polymer chains and the adverse swelling characteristics upon hydration. Therefore, the block copolymer with its enhanced proton conductivity characteristics, as compared to Nafion, and favorable structural/mechanical stability, as compared to the random copolymer, represents a viable alternative to current proton exchange membranes.

Book excerpt: Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), often regarded as a green energy source, have become a promising candidate to replace traditional power sources. One of the obstacles toward commercialization of PEM fuel cells is lack of high performance and low cost proton exchange membranes. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate higher-performance, Nafion-based composite proton exchange membranes that are suitable for operating at higher temperatures (> 85°C). Proton exchange membranes were prepared by adding silica and heteropolyacids (HPAs) to a proton-conducting polymer matrix, Nafion. The added silica powder particles, either by direct mixing or sol-gel reaction, were found to enhance the thermal stability and lower thermal expansion of the composite membranes. Incorporating HPAs into Nafion greatly increased the proton conductivity of Nafion and the single cell performance was also greatly improved. In order to prevent HPA leaching, Y zeolite was used to encage HPA molecules inside its supercages. A templating mechanism was also used to trap HPAs with silica gels. Membranes and membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) with encaged HPAs were studied in light of HPA's effects on the proton conductivity, thermal stability, thermal expansion coefficient, single cell performance, micro-morphology (SEM), and acid leaching. A nonelinear equation from fitted experimental data was proposed to model the relationship between proton conductivity and the acid doping level. The results showed that Y zeolite and silica gel can be used to prevent HPA from leaching by water. In order to increase the mechanical properties and water uptake properties, hydrophilic, expanded PTFE (ePTFE) was used as the scaffold material for PEM.
