Book Synopsis Adhesion in Cellulosic and Wood-Based Composites by : John F. Oliver
Download or read book Adhesion in Cellulosic and Wood-Based Composites written by John F. Oliver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellulose is a versatile and renewable natural resource which has attracted increasing attention in the last decade, expecially after the energy crisis of 1973. Apart from its extensive use as asolid product, wood is the most important source of cellulose fibres for papermaking and is also widely used as a source of energy. The form and availability ot· the forest provides a great opportunity for technological improvement and innovation in the future to satisfy the foreseeable increasing demand for wood based products. For example, North American sawmills and plywood mills presently recover only about 45 to 55% of logged wood while the remainder is disposed as waste, if it is not used in pulp manufacturing. In addition, top and branch wood, and logs from non-commercial species which are presently not recovered from the logging sites could provide an abundant and relatively inexpensive resource for the manufacture of composite products. Other valuable potential sour ces of cellulosic materials are waste paper and agricultural waste. A composite is the consolidation of two polymerie materials such that one of the components acts as the adhesive binder while the other forms the substrate matrix. In some cases, the matrix and the adhesive may be the same materials. To maximize the adhesion potential of the composite, the properties of the substrate which can enhance, hinder or complicate the development of optimum adhesion should be thoroughly explored and identified.

Book Synopsis Wood-Plastic Composites by : Anatole A. Klyosov
Download or read book Wood-Plastic Composites written by Anatole A. Klyosov and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-10-12 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, practical guide to wood-plastic composites and their properties This is the first book that presents an overview of the main principles underlying the composition of wood-plastic composite (WPC) materials and their performance in the real world. Focusing on the characteristics of WPC materials rather than their manufacture, this guide bridges the gap between laboratory-based research and testing and the properties WPC materials exhibit when they're used in decks, railing systems, fences, and other common applications. Complete with practical examples and case studies, this guide: Describes compositions of WPC materials, including thermoplastics, cellulose fiber, minerals, additives, and their properties Covers mechanical properties, microbial resistance, water absorption, flammability, slip resistance, thermal expansion-contraction, sensitivity to oxidation and solar radiation, and rheological properties of hot melts of WPC Covers subjects that determine esthetics, properties, performance, and durability of wood-plastic composite products Includes comparisons of different ASTM methods and procedures that apply to specific properties This is a comprehensive, hands-on reference for scientists, engineers, and researchers working with wood-plastic composites in plastics and polymers, materials science, microbiology, rheology, plastic technology, and chemical engineering, as well as an outstanding text for graduate students in these disciplines. It's also an excellent resource for suppliers and WPC manufacturers, and an accessible guide for developers, homebuilders, and landscape architects who want to know more about wood-plastic composites and their performance in the real world.

Book Synopsis Materials for Architectural Design 2 by : Victoria Ballard Bell
Download or read book Materials for Architectural Design 2 written by Victoria Ballard Bell and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As architecture and design programmes throughout the world break out of the classroom and adopt the holistic methods of design/build programs, Materials for Architectural Design 2 is a survey that bridges the gap between construction materials and design sensibility. Authors Victoria Ballard Bell and Patrick Rand have revisited the format of their award-winning first volume and present sixty new case studies of materials put to imaginative use by today's brightest architects. Bell and Rand introduce each material type - glass, concrete, wood, metal, plastic and masonry units - with new text describing its history and significance. Accessible case studies highlight recent advances in design and construction around the world - from a wooden church in Finland (JKMM Architects) and hand-crafted bamboo huts in Thailand (TYIN Tegnetsue Architects) to a bank encased in a glass shroud in Denmark (Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects) and a museum faced with thousands of multicoloured ceramic rods in Germany (Sauerbruch Hutton). In a materials landscape that constantly changes to meet the demands of contemporary designers, Materials for Architectural Design 2 is an up-to-date guide to the best and most exciting materials at their disposal.
