Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of polymer-modified bitumens has gained importance in road construction over the past few years. The fields of application are relatively varied and include waterproofing sheets as well as binders for surface dressings, porous asphalt, mastic asphalt and asphalt concrete. Those polymers mainly used are styrene-butadiene-styrene SBS copolymers, ethylene-vinyl acetate EVA and atactic polypropylene APP. In addition to adequate and constant quality of the modified binder, the user is entitled to require a qualitative identification and quantitative determination of the polymer incorporated in a bitumen. Infrared absorption spectroscopy is suggested as an appropriate technique for identifying and determining polymer components in the case of SBS and EVA. Two techniques of preparing samples for measurement and two methods of quantitative interpretation are described. As for APP, its quantitative determination is based on selective solubility in different solvents and infrared spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: The addition of polymers to bitumen allows the modification of certain physical properties, such as softening point, brittleness and ductility, of the bitumen. Polymer modified bitumen: Properties and characterisation provides a valuable and in-depth coverage of the science and technology of polymer modified bitumen. After an initial introduction to bitumen and polymer modified bitumen, the book is divided into two parts. Chapters in part one focus on the preparation and properties of a range of polymer modified bitumen, including polymer bitumen emulsions, modification of bitumen with poly (urethanes), waste rubber and plastic and polypropylene fibres. Part two addresses the characterisation and properties of polymer modified bitumen. Chapter topics covered include rheology, simulated and actual long term ageing studies; the solubility of bituminous binders in fuels and the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to study ageing/oxidation of polymer modified bitumen. Polymer modified bitumen is an essential reference for scientists and engineers, from both academia and the civil engineering and transport industries, interested in the properties and characterisation of polymer modified bitumen. Book excerpt: Solving Problems with Microscopy Comprehensive resource, based on real case examples, on the ability of the microscope for solving problems This book takes a “why to” rather than the common “how to” approach to demonstrate the capabilities of microscopy to solve problems. It provides entertaining and informative case examples and lessons regarding the unique value the microscope brings to problem solving by experienced scientists in various industries, including criminal and civil forensic science, manufacturing, environmental science, pharmaceutical science, cultural heritage, and biological sciences. Sample topics covered in this learning resource include: History of problem solving with microscopy Fortune favors the prepared mind The value of multiple associations The importance of context Knowing your limitations (i.e. knowing what you don’t know) Microscopists and other professional scientists who use microscopy can harness the information in this book to make better and more informed decisions by improving their problem-solving strategies and processes.

Book excerpt: The aim of the studies presented in this report is the implementation of rational concepts and testing procedures for the design and manufacture of bituminous materials for applications in pavement construction. Practical test procedures are recommended for binder evaluation, mix design and performance assessment of bituminous materials. The three main topics addressed are binder testing, mix design and mechanical testing of mixtures. Each is examined through interlaboratory tests and there is a literary review of existing practices and methods for the production of polymer modified binders, mixture design and the mechanical properties of mixtures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sheer volume of topics which could have been included under our general title prompted us to make some rather arbitrary decisions about content. Modification by irradiation is not included because the activity in this area is being treated elsewhere. We have chosen to emphasize chemical routes to modification and have striven to pre sent as balanced a representation of current activity as time and page count permit. Industrial applications, both real and potential, are included. Where appropriate, we have encouraged the contributors to include review material to help provide the reader with adequate context. The initial chapter is a review from a historical perspective of polymer modification and contains an extensive bibliography. The remainder of the book is divided into four general areas: Reactions and Preparation of Copolymers Reactions and Preparation of Block and Graft Copolymers Modification Through Condensation Reactions Applications The chemical modification of homopolymers such as polyvinylchlo ride, polyethylene, poly(chloroalkylene sulfides), polysulfones, poly chloromethylstyrene, polyisobutylene, polysodium acrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloroformate, sulfonated polystyrene; block and graft copolymers such as poly(styrene-block-ethylene-co-butylene block-styrene), poly(I,4-polybutadiene-block ethylene oxide), star chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylene, poly(isobutylene-co-2,3-dimethyl- 1,3-butadiene), poly(styrene-co-N-butylmethacrylate); cellulose, dex tran and inulin, is described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt modification is an important area in the development of new road and pavement materials. There is an urgent demand for road materials that can minimize fracture at low temperatures and increase resistance to deformation at high temperatures. The function of asphalt is to bind aggregate to protect it from water and other harmful agents. In the beginning asphalt was ideal for this purpose, but recently traffic loads have increased and environmental factors have deteriorated more rapidly than before. Asphalt is a byproduct of crude oil in the refining process, and it is considered a complex heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons. Asphalt modification has become an important research area, using several methods and new materials as modifiers.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bitumen is most commonly used as a binder in road pavement construction. Due to the harsh climate changes and heavier traffic loads, bitumen tends to undergo rutting and cracking which severely limits its service life and durability. Bitumen-based binders containing various proportions of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer, crumb rubber (CR) and fumed nanosilica have been synthesized. The modified binders have been studied for rheological properties, storage stability, nanoparticle dispersion, and thermal resistance. In addition, binder-sand composites have been prepared in a binder/sand weight ratio of 1:9 and have been tested for three-point flexural bend tests. Addition of nanosilica dramatically improves the rheological properties of bitumen with enhancements as great as 400% and the compatibility between bitumen and polymers is enhanced. In addition, CR-modified bitumen demonstrates a similar level of performance as SBS-modified bitumen, when both are used synergistically with nanosilica, which leads to beneficial environmental and economic impacts. Finally, the interfacial mechanisms between bitumen, polymers and nanosilica that are responsible for modification of bitumen using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) were investigated and correlated with the performance of the materials.
