Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farming Costs Every enterprise working to supply a market has two sides, the technical side involving the use Of special skill in the various processes involved in the production Of the particular commodities concerned, and the managerial side working to control this technical skill to the end that effort may be economically applied so that the final product-cost will be brought out as low as possible. As a business grows in size so does the tendency increase to separate the func tions of the technical and the managerial staff, until, in the great industrial organizations of today, we find a fairly complete division between them, and a demand has sprung up for individuals who, knowing little or even nothing of the technical side of a business, are able to control it success fully by a system of management based on the compilation of records of cost in every process and department. A man who is 100 per cent. Efficient as the manager of one par ticular business is 90 per cent. Efficient as the manager of any business is the dictum Of a certain successful manu facturer who values technical knowledge in a manager at no more than 10 per cent. Of his total equipment, and it is certainly true that most of the large industrial enterprises Of our day are controlled by men who are well versed in management and the means to analyse the processes of production rather than in their technique. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: February 24, 1969 The costs of farming, continuing their upward trend in 1968, were about 3 percent, or just over $1 billion, higher than in 1967 (table At the same time production increased about 2 percent. Total farm ex penses in 1968 for inputs and services of nonfarm origin were almost 5 percent above 1967, while outlays for farm-produced items-feed, seed, and livestock-were down 1 percent. Overhead costs continued a persis tent rise. The higher total expenses in 1968, however, were more than offset by increased receipts from farming, and realized net farm income for the year was around billion, up from billion in 1967 but below the billion in 1966. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reliability and Adequacy of Farm-Price Data In combining the farm prices for all States into a United States monthly farm price for each product, as released each month by the department, the State prices have been weighted according to the latest estimate of the production of each crop, in the case of crops, and according to the number of head of each class of live stock on farms January 1, in the case of livestock. Census produc tion weights are used for livestock products and for such other products as can not be weighted as indicated above. With crops, the December estimates of production by States are used as weights as soon after the estimates are made as possible, usually with the January prices. Since the December 1 prices are used in determining the December value of crop production by States and for the United States, the average value per unit of the United States production of a given cr0p is also the United States average price for December 1. The December estimates of produc tion are used as constant weights for the ensuing year until the December estimates are again available unless there has been a marked shift in production, in which case a change in weights to the current year's estimated production is made at or about harvest time. When the January 1 estimates of livestock are used as weights, the new weights are used each year with the February monthly prices, as well as with the January 1 values of livestock per head. This method lends itself readily to determining an average 'price for the United States each month as the prices become available. It has the disadvantage of giving a State the same weight each month of the year whether there are many sales during that month or only a few. In case no prices are reported from a given State in any particular month, only the prices and weights of the States reporting are used in determining the United States average. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: May 22, 1962 However, last year's increase over the 1960 farm production expenses was more than offset by the higher gross farm income. This additional income came about equally from higher Government payments, and from an increase in cash receipts from marketings of farm products. A larger volume of livestock and livestock product marketings, together with a slight improvement in prices received for crops, produced the increase in cash receipts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation, Vol. 1: September, 1946 Real gains have been made in productive efficiency during the past decade. Farm operators have increased production to to 50 percent and reduced unit costs by almost the same amount. These gains are the result of a number of factors that have not been shared uniformly by families on all types of farms. Increased production at lower unit costs is essential to improvement in the material standard of farm living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: November, 1960 The rise in total farm production expenses in the United States leveled off this year, and little change is expected in 1961. Production expenses for goods and services of nonfarm origin generally were about the same or slightly higher in 1960 compared with 1959. Total wages paid to hired labor were about the same, but interest payments and taxes rose sharply. Expenditures for livestock and feed, which were obtained largely from other farmers, were lower in 1960 than in 1959. Because of the increase in average size of farms, expenditures per farm continued to rise. Costs and returns on eight types of farms, widely scattered throughout the country and representative of much of U. S. Agriculture, indicate that production expenses were generally higher in 1960 than in 1959; increases ranged up to 12 percent on Intermountain cattle ranches where, because of the drought, more hay was bought at higher prices. In the first 10 months of this year, prices paid by farmers in the United States for production items, including interest, taxes, and wage rates, averaged about a third of 1 percent higher than a year earlier. Prices paid for farm machinery were about 3 percent higher, and wage rates of hired labor averaged about 4 percent higher than a year earlier. Taxes were 8 percent higher than a year ago, and interest payments per acre on total mortgage indebtedness were nearly 10 percent higher than last year. Prices of most other goods and services of nonfarm origin were about the same as in 1959. With carryover of feed at an all-time high and production of another near record crop of both feed grains and forage this year, feed prices have averaged slightly lower than a year ago. Prices of feeder and replacement livestock averaged about 8 percent lower so far this year. In October, prices of feeder cattle averaged 10 percent lower than a year earlier. Prices paid for feeder lambs and milk cows also were lower, but prices of feeder pigs, baby chicks and turkey poults were higher than a year ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Estimating Agricultural Costs of Production: Workshop Proceedings There is no clear answer as to the better source. The engineer probably knows more about the technical capabilities of a machine and a labor efficiency expert probably knows more about labor requirements for accomplishing a specific task. But the farmer may know something more about what he in fact does than either expert. One thing is clear. It costs far less to get information from a few experts than a large sample of farmers. The high costs of surveys and the problems of respondent burden are likely to push us toward more intelligent and imaginative use of expert Opinion in the future than we have in the past. The use of producer panels, the delphi technique, and other methods should be explored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: May 1957 The aspects of the situation that have been analyzed in considerable detail in previous issues (such as the effect of increased use of fertilizer on output and per-unit cost of production) are covered briefly in this report so that more space may be devoted to the economics of farm size, irrigation, and farm service buildings. This spring, farmers in all parts of the country are paying higher rates for hired workers than they paid a year ago. The increase ranges from 2 percent in the Mountain States to 6 percent in New England (table The average rise over the whole country amounted to percent. This is a slightly greater increase than occurred from April 1955 to April 1956. As of April 1, farmers in the Pacific States were paying higher average rates for hired workers than in other regions. Wages per month with board and room averaged $1914 in these States, compared with $128 for the country as a whole. Hourly rates without board and room averaged on the Pacific Coast as compared with 92 cents for the country as a whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: November 1963 The relation of operating expense to gross income varies considerably by types of farms in various locations throughout the country. Operating ex penses generally comprise a lower percentage of gross income on extensive types of farms such as cattle ranches in the Intermountain region of the West and the winter wheat farms of the Southern Plains, on which hired labor is a relatively small input and large acreages of land are required. In recent years, operating expenses have comprised about 40 percent of gross income on those farms. Oper ating expenses usually take the highest percentage of gross income on fruit and vegetable farms, poultry farms, dairy farms, and feeder livestock operations. On poultry farms in New Jersey, for example, the ratio of operating expenses to gross income averaged 89 percent over the 1958 - 62 period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: November 22, 1967 The increase in expenses in 1967 results in part from higher prices for many production inputs. Prices paid by farmers moved up only slightly or were essentially unchanged for several categories such as feed, live stock, motor supplies, building and fencing materials, and fertilizer. However, other items such as wages and property taxes per acre were sub stantially higher. Considering all farm inputs, the index of prices paid for production items, interest, taxes, and wage rates was 3 percent higher in 1967 than in 1966. Then too, more purchased inputs were used in total in 1967, contributing to the increase in farm expenses. Farm production expenses are likely to rise another billion dollars in 1968, probably by about the same amount in sight for 1967. Continuing increases are highly probable for taxes, interest, and insurance. Larger expenditures due to greater use are likely for several important produc tion inputs, including feed, fertilizer, and pesticides. However, expen ses for hired labor may continue about level as higher wages are largely offset by a declining number of workers.
