Book excerpt: This study provides evidence on how German multinational firms have restructured their service activities around the recent crisis. Making use of new micro-level data on service imports of German multinationals from 2002-2008, we assess the determinants of service offshoring along the extensive and intensive margins. In particular, we evaluate how internal frictions in terms of a sharp drop in the sales level (per employee) and external frictions in terms of a reduced availability of credit co-determine the likelihood and the extent of sourcing services from abroad. First, we find that firms are less likely to start to import services from abroad if they are under cost pressure. By contrast, firms intensify existing service imports linkages in times of a sales drop. Second, financial constraints, which played a major role for the goods trade during the crisis, did not have any significant effect on service imports. These results are in line with the argument that the generally observed crisis-resilience of service trade stems from increased pressures to save on variable costs through offshoring and from its lower dependence on external finance. Furthermore, and in line with our argument, we find that a decline in sales and labor productivity induces firms to sort into intra-firm rather than arm's-length trading.

The dataset covers the US and its 33 trading partners over the period 1999 to 2013. The estimation method takes into account certain unobservable characteristics of trading partners. The results recommend that distance adversely affects the US real export of services, but has no influence on real import. Also, the higher the volume of trade in goods, the greater outward foreign direct investment, and the bigger trading partners' market size, the more the exports of services of the US.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the determinants of different types of imported goods. We develop a model in which final good and intermediate good sectors require imported intermediate inputs for production. Our model shows that all types of imported goods are commonly affected by transportation costs across borders and elasticity of substitution among imported goods. Between different types of imports, final consumption goods are more associated with factor income while intermediate inputs are largely affected by exports of importing sectors. Using Korean import data, we decompose imports into final goods, intermediate goods, and raw materials, and use a first-difference model to find that results are consistent with the theoretical implications. Our results show that while imports of final goods increase more as an importing sector's income increase, imports of intermediate goods and raw materials are more likely to increase as an importing sector's exports increase. In particular, taking into account that a sector's exports and imports can be inter-determined, we further use a dynamic simultaneous-equations model with a GMM estimation technique to find that the importing sector's exports unidirectionally increase the imports of intermediate goods and raw materials.

This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.
