Book excerpt: Two new families of building blocks have been prepared and fully characterized and their coordination chemistry exploited for the preparation of molecule-based magnetic materials. The first class of compounds were prepared by exploiting the chemistry of 3,3'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine together with 2-pyridine carbonyl chloride or 2-pyridine aldehyde. Two new ligands, 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-[2-pyridinecarboxamide] (Li, 2.3) and N'-6/s(2-pyridylmethyl) [2,2'bipyridine]-3,3'-diimine (L2, 2.7), were prepared and characterized. For ligand L4, two copper(II) coordination compounds were isolated with stoichiometrics [Cu2(Li)(hfac)2] (2.4) and [Cu(Li)Cl2] (2.5). The molecular structures of both complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. In both complexes the ligand is in the dianionic form and coordinates the divalent Cu(II) ions via one amido and two pyridine nitrogen donor atoms. In (2.4), the coordination geometry around both Cu11 ions is best described as distorted trigonal bipyramidal where the remaining two coordination sites are satisfied by hfac counterions. In (2.5), both Cu(II) ions adopt a (4+1) distorted square pyramidal geometry. One copper forms a longer apical bond to an adjacent carbonyl oxygen atom, whereas the second copper is chelated to a neighboring Cu-Cl chloride ion to afford chloride bridged linear [Cu2(Li)Cl2]2 tetramers that run along the c-axis of the unit cell. The magnetic susceptibility data for (2.4) reveal the occurrence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the copper(II) ions. In contrast, variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements for (2.5) reveal more complex magnetic properties with the presence of ferromagnetic exchange between the central dimeric pair of copper atoms and weak antiferromagnetic exchange between the outer pairs of copper atoms. The Schiff-base bis-imine ligand (L2, 2.7) was found to be highly reactive; single crystals grown from dry methanol afforded compound (2.14) for which two methanol molecules had added across the imine double bond. The susceptibility of this ligand to nucleophilic attack at its imine functionality assisted via chelation to Lewis acidic metal ions adds an interesting dimension to its coordination chemistry. In this respect, a Co(II) quaterpyridine-type complex was prepared via a one-pot transformation of ligand L2 in the presence of a Lewis acidic metal salt. The rearranged complex was characterized by X-ray crystallography and a reaction mechanism for its formation has been proposed. Three additional rearranged complexes (2.13), (2.17) and (2.19) were also isolated when ligand (L2, 2.7) was reacted with transition metal ions. The molecular structures of all three complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The second class of compounds that are reported in this thesis, are the two diacetyl pyridine derivatives, 4-pyridyl-2,6-diacetylpyridine (5.5) and 2,2'-6,6'-tetraacetyl-4,4'-bipyridine (5.15). Both of these compounds have been designed as intermediates for the metal templated assembly of a Schiff-base N3O2 macrocycle. From compound (5.15), a covalently tethered dimeric Mn(II) macrocyclic compound of general formula {[Mn^C^XJCl-FkO^Cl-lO.SFbO (5.16) was prepared and characterized. The X-ray analysis of (5.16) reveals that the two manganese ions assume a pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with the macrocycle occupying the pentagonal plane and the axial positions being filled by a halide ion and a H2O molecule. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal the occurrence of antiferromagnetic interactions between covalently tethered Mn(II)-Mn(II) dimeric units. Following this methodology a Co(II) analogue (5.17) has also been prepared which is isostructural with (5.16).

Magnetic materials at the nanometer size scale have been the subject of enormous research effort worldwide for more than half a century. Different magnetic nanoparticles have shown different behavior in the absence and presence of an external magnetic field, which has led them to be categorized as soft or hard magnets. Applications range from medical and biomedical devices to magnetic recording media and magnetic sensing have emphasized the importance of this class of materials. Soft magnetic phases have found application in power generation and magnetic targeted drug delivery, while hard magnets have been subject of extensive research for application as energy storage media. Discovery of the exchange-coupling phenomenon between two adjacent hard and soft magnetic phases has attracted scientists to develop advanced materials for energy storage with no usage of fossil fuels: clean energy. In this Dissertation, synthesis of pure phase, soft FeCo nanoparticles with high magnetic moment and hard phase CoxC nanoparticles possessing high coercivity is reported. The polyol method (chemical co-precipitating at polyhydric alcohol as reducing agent) is used to make FeCo and CoxC nanoparticles and the effects of important reaction kinetics parameters on the structure and magnetic properties of the products are studied. Careful analysis of correlations between these parameters and the properties of the magnetic particles has made synthesis of FeCo and CoxC nanoparticles with desired properties possible. Fabrication of MnAlC-FeCo heterostructures as a rare earth-free alternative for high-performance permanent magnet is also reported. To synthesize MnAlC-FeCo, mechanical alloying and dry mixing of MnAlC and FeCo nanoparticles are accomplished followed by annealing in a furnace. Overall, the achieved results in this work enable synthesis of high moment FeCo and high coercivity CoxC with desired structure and magnetic properties obtained through polyol method. In particular, this Dissertation provides the technique to fabricate cobalt carbide nanoparticles without using rare earth elements as a catalyst or as heterogeneous seed nuclei at any stage of the processing.

Book excerpt: This thesis will present the synthesis, characterization and magnetic measurements of lanthanide complexes with varying nuclearities (Ln, Ln2, Ln3 and Ln4). EuIII, GdIII, TbIII, DyIII, HoIII and YbIII have been selected as the metal centers. Eight polydentate Schiff-base ligands have been synthesized with N- and mostly O-based coordination environments which chelate 7-, 8- or 9-coordinate lanthanide ions. The molecular structures were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography and the magnetic properties were measured using a SQUID magnetometer. Each chapter consists of crystal structures and magnetic measurements for complexes with the same nuclearity. There are eight DyIII SMMs in this thesis which are discrete molecules that act as magnets below a certain temperature called their blocking temperature. This phenomenon results from an appreciable spin ground state (S) as well as negative uni-axial anisotropy (D), both present in lanthanide ions owing to their f electron shell, generating an effective energy barrier for the reversal of the magnetization (Ueff). The ab initio calculations are also included for the SMMs with high anisotropic energy barriers to understand the mechanisms of slow magnetic relaxation in these systems.

Chapter 1 presents an extensive survey of the literature of cyano-bridged single-molecule and single-chain magnets, focusing on a building block approach wherein simple cyanometalate precursor complexes direct the assembly of larger architectures. Specific synthetic strategies to obtain multinuclear clusters and chain compounds of desired structure and magnetic properties are outlined in detail. Finally, perspectives on the future directions in the field are presented. Chapter 2 exemplifies the utility of the building block approach in generating high-nuclearity cyano-bridged clusters. It describes the design and synthesis of the facially-capped tricyanide building unit, [TpCr(CN)3]-, as its incorporation into the face-centered cubic cluster [Tp8(H2O)6Cu6Cr8(CN)24]4+. Ferromagnetic exchange between CrIII and CuII ions gives rise to an S = 15 spin ground state, one of the highest yet observed for a cyano-bridged cluster. In addition, the formation of this cluster is accompanied by a linkage isomerism of 12 of the 24 cyanide ligands, providing the first example of a molecule undergoing partial cyanide isomerism. Chapter 3 presents a survey of actinide-containing molecules that have demonstrated evidence of magnetic exchange coupling. The strong magnetic anisotropy characteristic of these elements marks them as promising candidates for single-molecule magnets, however the spin-orbit coupling that gives rise to this anisotropy also complicates analysis of exchange interactions. Current methods for extracting coupling information in these systems are outlined in detail. In addition, molecules that bear exchange-coupled centers but as of yet have not been thoroughly characterized are presented. Chapter 4 describes a detailed investigation of a series of iron(II) pyrrolide complexes of formulae [(tpaR)Fe]-, representing the first examples of transition metal-based mononuclear single-molecule magnets. Static magnetic measurements and high-field EPR spectroscopy reveal the presence of exceptionally strong uniaxial anisotropy in the complexes. Moreover, dynamic magnetic measurements carried out in a small dc field demonstrate that this anisotropy leads to slow relaxation in the complexes. In addition, this relaxation dynamics is probed through Mössbauer spectroscopy, which reveals that the phenomenon occurs in zero applied field in at least two complexes. Chapter 5 describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of cyano-bridged single-chain magnets. Reaction of the S = 3/2, high-anisotropy building unit [ReCl4(CN)2]2- with [M(DMF)6]2+ (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) is shown to direct the formation of the chain compounds (DMF)4MReCl4(CN)2. Dc susceptibility measurements uncover the presence of intrachain antiferromagnetic (Mn) and ferromagnetic (Fe, Co, Ni) exchange. Most importantly, ac susceptibility measurements reveal that all of the chain compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation at low temperature. Notably, the Fe congener displays significant magnetic hysteresis at low temperatures, thus demonstrating classical magnet-like behavior in a one-dimensional system. Chapter 6 describes the synthesis the incorporation of [ReCl4(CN)2]2- into the zig-zag chain compound (Bu4N)[TpCuReCl4(CN)2], which is found to demonstrate the strongest ferromagnetic exchange yet observed through cyanide. The strong coupling arises from judicious selection of ReIV and CuII ions, whose molecular orbitals interact through the cyanide bridge such that orbital overlap is minimized. Moreover, the compound is shown to display metamagnetic behavior, and the complete magnetic phase diagram is elucidated through a combination of experimental and theoretical analysis. Finally, the anisotropy tensors of the ReIV centers are shown to cancel, leading to a small effective chain anisotropy and thus the absence of single-chain magnet behavior. Chapter 7 concludes this work by demonstrating that [ReCl4(CN)2]2- can also be employed in the assembly of molecular magnets, as it presents the synthesis and characterization of two linear trinuclear clusters of formulae [(PY5Me2)2M2ReCl4(CN)2]2+ (M = Mn, Ni; PY5Me2 = 2,6-bis(1,1-bis(2-pyridyl)ethyl)-pyridine). Dc susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange in the Mn congener, while ferromagnetic exchange is observed in the Ni analogue. In addition, dc magnetization experiments show the presence of axial magnetic anisotropy in both clusters.

X-ray powder diffraction revealed that the perovskite structure of BF-BaHf transfers from rhombohedral to cubic symmetry with the increasing concentration of BaHf, resulting in the formation of solid solution. Compared with pure BF, the ferromagnetism in the BF-BaHf solid solution is substantially enhanced by the structural distortion due to A-and B-site co-substitutions, with remanent magnetization Mr = 0.0469 ????" ⁄????. ???? in x = 0.15. Meanwhile, ferroelectric domains were observed by transmission electron microscopy for x = 0.15. This confirms the beneficial role of BaHf substitution in enhancing magnetic properties while maintaining ferroelectric properties of the BF-based multiferroic materials. Another new multiferroic solid solution of pseudo-binary system (1-x)[0.8BiFeO3- 0.2BaHfO3]-xBaTiO3 [(1-x)(0.8BF-0.2BaHf)-xBaT] has been successfully synthesized by solid state reaction with x = 0.15 - 0.95. All the composition studies showed a gradual phase transition from rhombohedral to tetragonal phase as the BaT concentration increases. A morphotropic phase boundary is found in the composition range of 0.70

Book excerpt: This PhD thesis summarises a study of the nanostructuration of single molecule magnets and organic radicals on metallic surfaces, carried out by the author in collaboration with a number of research groups in Italy, France, Germany and Israel. A tailored approach was followed to graft individual molecules to the surface, to characterise the morphology of the functionalised surfaces with standard scanning probe microscopy and to investigate their magnetic properties using X-Ray circular dichroism. The aim of this project was to develop the initial basis for the organisation and addressing of magnetic molecules with a view to the development of single molecule devices for data storage and molecular-spintronic applications.
