Book excerpt: A compression-filter design is described which utilizes 76 broadband taps spaced nonuniformly along a delay line. Also described is a computer program, written in FORTRAN II language, which can be used to calculate the individual tap positions and weightings for a maximum-response peak-to-sidelobe ratio. Computations made using the computer program resulted in a compression filter matched to an excitation which changed frequency linearly with time over an octave bandwidth and which had a time-bandwidth product of 50. The response of this filter was a compressed pulse with a peak-to-sidelobe ratio of over 100. In addition, the filter proved to be less sensitive to scan-rate errors than a continuously dispersive filter with the same compression characteristics. Experimental results were obtained on a 76-tap compression filter designed to operate in the 1- to 2-Gc frequency range. The performance of this filter tends to confirm the validity of the technique and provides an encouraging basis for future work. (Author).

Book excerpt: The use of an analog adaptive filter can offer benefits over a digital adaptive filter in application that require high-speed, low-power, and a moderate degree of linearity. An adaptive digital FIR filter will typically be implemented as a finite impulse response filter using a pipelined tapped delay fine with programmable tap coefficients. When an analog adaptive filter is constructed, a parallel tapped delay line is used. A programmable analog FIR will typically use buffered sample-and-hold blocks for the analog delay line and transconductors to implement the MDACs used for the tap coefficient multiplication. The research focusses on a more passive approach to the circuit realization. An entirely voltage-mode, switched-capacitor implementation is presented. A seven tap adaptive analog FIR filter using the passive architecture is realized in an area of 1.44mm2. The fabricated chip has a power dissipation of 104mW using a sampling frequency of 200MHz and a power supply of 3.3V.

Various methods for generating and tapping these waves were conducted, together with a design analysis for the performance of such a device. On this basis, a selection of piezoelectric quartz was made and two 1023 bit, phase coded filters were constructed and evaluated. Performance as code generators was in good agreement with the analysis, but the loss in correlation was very much larger than predicted. Possible causes for this are discussed. On the basis of this work, it appears that near optimum filters with predictable performance can be fabricated using elastic surface wave technology. (Author).

Book excerpt: Based on the popular Artech House classic, Digital Communication Systems Engineering with Software-Defined Radio, this book provides a practical approach to quickly learning the software-defined radio (SDR) concepts needed for work in the field. This up-to-date volume guides readers on how to quickly prototype wireless designs using SDR for real-world testing and experimentation. This book explores advanced wireless communication techniques such as OFDM, LTE, WLA, and hardware targeting. Readers will gain an understanding of the core concepts behind wireless hardware, such as the radio frequency front-end, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, as well as various processing technologies. Moreover, this volume includes chapters on timing estimation, matched filtering, frame synchronization message decoding, and source coding. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is explained and details about HDL code generation and deployment are provided. The book concludes with coverage of the WLAN toolbox with OFDM beacon reception and the LTE toolbox with downlink reception. Multiple case studies are provided throughout the book. Both MATLAB and Simulink source code are included to assist readers with their projects in the field.

Measurements were taken of its performance as a matched-filter for a rectangular pulse-modulated input. The simplicity of its construction and absence of tuning adjustments along with providing a good approximation to an ideal filter are the main advantages of this technique. (Author).
