Book Synopsis Charles Williams and C.S.Lewis by : Paul Fiddes
Download or read book Charles Williams and C.S.Lewis written by Paul Fiddes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the literary relationship between Charles Williams and C. S. Lewis during the years 1936-1945 focuses on the theme of 'co-inherence' at the centre of their friendship. The idea of 'co-inherence' has long been recognized as an important contribution of Williams to theology, and had significant influence on the thought of Lewis. This account of the two writers' conviction that human persons 'inhere' or 'dwell' both in each other and in the triune God reveals many inter-relationships between their writings that would otherwise be missed. It also shows up profound differences between their world-views, and a gradual, though incomplete, convergence onto common ground. Exploring the idea of co-inherence throws light on the fictional worlds they created, as well as on their treatment (whether together or separately) of a wide range of theological and literary subjects: the Arthurian tradition, the poetry of William Blake and Thomas Traherne, the theology of Karl Barth, the nature of human and divine love, and the doctrine of the Trinity. This study draws for the first time on transcriptions of Williams' lectures from 1932 to 1939, tracing more clearly the development and use of the idea of co-inherence in his thought than has been possible before. Finally, an account of the use of the word 'co-inherence' in English-speaking theology suggests that the differences that existed between Lewis and Williams, especially on the place of analogy and participation in human experience of God, might be resolved by a theology of co-inherence in the Trinity.
Book Synopsis Searching for Spirituality in Higher Education by : Bruce W. Speck
Download or read book Searching for Spirituality in Higher Education written by Bruce W. Speck and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searching for Spirituality in Higher Education brings together eclectic points of view on spirituality, drawing upon various theoretical perspectives to frame a discussion of spirituality in higher education. Following a comprehensive review of the current literature on spirituality, chapters examine the relationship between religion and spirituality and explore related legal issues. Subsequent theory chapters make no unified claims about the basis of spirituality, reflecting the speculative nature of an ethereal subject. The final section contains rich examples that explore ways to integrate spirituality in several academic disciplines as well as in student affairs. In its entirety, the book encompasses a comprehensive review of the salient issues related to spirituality in higher education. The volume will be useful in courses on religion, nursing, business, and the humanities.
Book Synopsis Pictures of the Spirit by : David T. Williams
Download or read book Pictures of the Spirit written by David T. Williams and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-06-09 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the day of Pentecost, there was the sound as of a great wind, and what appeared to be tongues of fire appeared... Particularly since the start of the twentieth century, the Christian world has been in turmoil over the experiences that the Holy Spirit has given to many Christians. But few understand who it is who is producing such a tremendous effect; after all, unlike Jesus, we cannot see the Spirit! Here the Bible does give a lot of help by describing the Spirit in ways that we understand, such as wind, fire or a dove. These illustrations are explained, and suggestions are made for a number of others, both from the ancient and modern worlds. To better understand what the Spirit does, we need to better understand who he is; this book does just that.

Book Synopsis Q, the First Writing about Jesus by : Yoseop Ra
Download or read book Q, the First Writing about Jesus written by Yoseop Ra and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows readers the formation of Q by exploring how the texts were subjected to redaction four times. As author Yoseop Ra demonstrates, the first redaction of Q conveys the words and deeds of the historical Jesus and then the rest of redactors imposed their own theological interpretation to the words and deeds of Jesus. His argument will provide readers with a fresh look on how the earliest "Jesus movement" was formed in the thirties of the first century CE. Q is a hypothetical document extracted from the common source between Matthew and Luke. Thus, it is not easy to distinguish the different layers of redaction embedded in Q. However, form critical, redaction critical, composition critical, and socio-historical approaches to it makes readers separate the four layers of redaction from Q. Each layer will show how the disciples of Jesus moved from the countryside to Jerusalem via some rural cities expanding their boundary.

Book Synopsis Subversive Meals by : Streett R Alan
Download or read book Subversive Meals written by Streett R Alan and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Subversive Meals, Alan Streett follows on from James C Scott's idea of a hidden transcript to argue that the Lord's Supper was a subversive, non-violent act against the Roman Empire. Primarily through exegesis of the writings of Luke and Paul, Streett examines the political nature of the meal in the context of first-century Roman domination. In his widely researched argument, Streett illuminates for the reader why understanding the Lord's Supper as a purely symbolic act overlooks the political significance it would have had in the first century CE. Subversive Meals analyses how the structure of the Lord's Supper followed that of a Roman banquet by having a deipon and a symposium, the latter being the time when anti-resistance discussions would take place. Streett examines several aspects of the history, context and theological significance of the Lord's Supper. He discusses such topics as the identification of Passover as an anti-imperial meal against the Pharaoh's rule, the Roman domination system, the meal practices of Jesus, the eschatological meaning of the Last Supper, the practice of this anti-imperial work ethic in the early church, and the gift of prophecy as a symposium activity. By seeing the Lord's Supper as a political act, readers will be able to study Scriptural passages more closely and precisely.
