Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descendants of Philip Henry, M.A., Incumbent of Worthenbury, in the County of Flint: Who Was Ejected Therefrom by the Act of Uniformity in 1662 The annexed tables of the Descendants of the Rev. Philip Henry, are founded upon a genealogical tree, drawn up originally, about fifty years ago, by Mr. Matthew Witton, one of the descendants of that excellent man, a copy of which was made, some years ago, by a Friend, for the Editor. Having availed herself of the several opportunities of communi cation with different branches of the family which have occurred during the long period that has elapsed since the original document came into her possession, to make such additions as were, from time to time, needful, she is induced to print a few copies for the benefit of such of the Descendants as may desire to possess one in the belief that a reverential regard for the memory of our forefathers, where it is founded on the intrinsic qualities of the mind and character, rather than on the adventitious circumstances of rank and situation - ou What they have been, rather than on what they have possessed, can scarcely fail to exert a valuable moral in uence on the minds of their Descendants. The Editor prefixes a summary of the life of the head of the family, which was drawn up by the same Gentleman (mr. Witton) who originally made out the tree, and which was ingeniously arranged, so as to compose the trunk, whilst the names of the different children diverged off in the form of branches. As these, however, had become, in the lapse of so many years, too heavily laden with names, to admit of their retention in their original form, a different mode of arrangement has been adopted, and one which it is believed will prove more convenient for reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays contains a wealth of information on the nature of the family in the early modern period. This is a core topic within economic and social history courses which is taught at most universities. This text gives readers an overview of how feminist historians have been interpreting the history of the family, ever since Laurence Stone's seminal work FAMILY, SEX AND MARRIAGE IN ENGLAND 1500-1800 was published in 1977. The text is divided into three coherent parts on the following themes: bodies and reproduction; maternity from a feminist perspective; and family relationships. Each part is prefaced by a short introduction commenting on new work in the area. This book will appeal to a wide variety of students because of its sociological, historical and economic foci.

Book Synopsis Matthew Henry: The Bible, Prayer, and Piety by : Paul Middleton
Download or read book Matthew Henry: The Bible, Prayer, and Piety written by Paul Middleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three hundred years after his death, Matthew Henry (1662–1714) remains arguably the best known expositor of the Bible in English, due largely to his massive six-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments. However, Henry's famous commentary is by no means the only expression of his engagement with the Scriptures. His many sermons and works on Christian piety - including the still popular Method for Prayer - are saturated with his peculiarly practical approach to the Bible. To mark the tercentenary of Henry's death, Matthew A. Collins and Paul Middleton have brought together notable historians, theologians, and biblical scholars to celebrate his life and legacy. Representing the first serious examination of Henry's body of work and approach to the Bible, Matthew Henry: The Bible, Prayer, and Piety opens a scholarly conversation about the place of Matthew Henry in the eighteenth-century nonconformist movement, his contribution to the interpretation of the Bible, and his continued legacy in evangelical piety.
Book Synopsis Dissent and the Bible in Britain, c.1650-1950 by : Scott Mandelbrote
Download or read book Dissent and the Bible in Britain, c.1650-1950 written by Scott Mandelbrote and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The claim that the Bible was 'the Christian's only rule of faith and practice' has been fundamental to Protestant dissent. Dissenters first braved persecution and then justified their adversarial status in British society with the claim that they alone remained true to the biblical model of Christ's Church. They produced much of the literature that guided millions of people in their everyday reading of Scripture, while the voluntary societies that distributed millions of Bibles to the British and across the world were heavily indebted to Dissent. Yet no single book has explored either what the Bible did for dissenters or what dissenters did to establish the hegemony of the Bible in British culture. The protracted conflicts over biblical interpretation that resulted from the bewildering proliferation of dissenting denominations have made it difficult to grasp their contribution as a whole. This volume evokes the great variety in the dissenting study and use of the Bible while insisting on the factors that gave it importance and underlying unity. Its ten essays range across the period from the later seventeenth to the mid-twentieth century and make reference to all the major dissenting denominations of the United Kingdom. The essays are woven together by a thematic introduction which places the Bible at the centre of dissenting ecclesiology, eschatology, public worship and 'family religion', while charting the political and theological divisions that made the cry of 'the Bible only' so divisive for dissenters in practice.

Book excerpt: * Instant NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY bestseller * * GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER for BEST DEBUT and BEST ROMANCE of 2019 * * BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR* for VOGUE, NPR, VANITY FAIR, and more! * What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic. "I took this with me wherever I went and stole every second I had to read! Absorbing, hilarious, tender, sexy—this book had everything I crave. I’m jealous of all the readers out there who still get to experience Red, White & Royal Blue for the first time!" - Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners "Red, White & Royal Blue is outrageously fun. It is romantic, sexy, witty, and thrilling. I loved every second." - Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six
