Book excerpt: Depression in the Pews is written by Dr. Dwight Owens. This book will shed light on specific ideas related to depression that has not been addressed lately by the church. It is meant to provide the twenty-first-century church with the language to begin talking about the intersection between depression and the faith-based community. In this book I walk you through what it actually means to be a believer in Jesus Christ and admit to the stigma of having depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia. This book will share with pastors and church leaders why it is now essential that they actually address these issues from the pulpit. Also, I will attempt to affirm the fact that there is a connection between depression and our faith. Given this truth, accepting professional and/or spiritual help for this disease should not be considered a bad thing, but perhaps a paradigm shift in the way our churches minister healing to these individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 25, 1938, in the early days of the welfare system, the reviled poormaster Harry Barck—wielding power over who would receive public aid—died from a paper spike thrust into his heart. Barck was murdered, the prosecution would assert, by an unemployed mason named Joe Scutellaro. In denying Scutellaro money, Barck had suggested the man's wife prostitute herself on the streets rather than ask the city of Hoboken, New Jersey, for aid. The men scuffled. Scutellaro insisted that Barck fell on his spike; the police claimed he grabbed the spike and stabbed Barck. News of the poormaster's death brought national attention to the plight of ten million unemployed living in desperate circumstances. A team led by celebrated attorney Samuel Leibowitz of &“Scottsboro Boys&” fame worked to save Scutellaro from the electric chair, arguing that the jobless man's struggle with the poormaster was a symbol of larger social ills. The trial became an indictment &“of a system which expects a man to live, in this great democracy, under such shameful circumstances.&” We live in a time where the issues examined in Killing the Poormaster—massive unemployment, endemic poverty, and the inadequacy of public assistance—remain vital. With its insight into our social contract, Killing the Poormaster reads like today's news.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1937, with the Depression deep and World War II looming, a California triple murder stunned an already grim nation. After a frantic week-long manhunt for the killer, a suspect emerged, and his sensational trial captivated audiences from coast to coast. Justice was swift, and the condemned man was buried away with the horrifying story. But decades later, Pamela Everett, a lawyer and former journalist, starts digging, following up a cryptic comment her father once made about a tragedy in their past. Her journey is uniquely personal as she uncovers her family's secret history, but the investigation quickly takes unexpected turns into her professional wheelhouse. Everett unearths a truly historic legal case that included one of the earliest criminal profiles in the United States, the genesis of modern sex offender laws, and the last man sentenced to hang in California. Digging deeper and drawing on her experience with wrongful convictions, Everett then raises detailed and haunting questions about whether the authorities got the right man. Having revived the case to its rightful place in history, she leaves us with enduring concerns about the death penalty then and now. A journey chronicled through the mind of a lawyer and from the heart of a daughter, Little Shoes is both a captivating true crime story and a profoundly personal account of one family's struggle to cope with tragedy through the generations.

Book excerpt: Introduction Hello, My Name Is Payton Crank, I'm A Life Coach and a survivor of depression, I Help Men and Women All Over The Globe With Depression Because I dealt with Severe Depression for all of my teenage and a couple years of my adult life, And The amount of times I thought about suicide was not a normal amount for someone at that age to think, well at least that's what I felt and thought, So now that i've finally overcome depression Im creating this book in hopes that I can help people with depression because the suicide rate in America at the time of writing this book is really really high, I really would love to change people's lives so that people can finally be liberated from depression, This book is my effort to help the ongoing suicide crisis in America and across the globe, And Everything I put Into each chapter of this book is extremely thought out and extremely easy to understand, I structured this book the way I did and explained the things I did in order to help people overcome depression by using the step by step guide that I am giving You In This book. My Story In the past I hated myself, I always wondered what was wrong with me, and why I couldn't overcome the emotions I was dealing with. The pain I felt every day made me lay in my bed curled up in a ball crying, not having the drive to do anything, I stayed in my bed for days and hours without leaving the house, and I never left the house if I didn't have to. I started pushing everyone out of my life, And I started to not even do the things that I loved to do. Everyday I thought about suicide and wondered if I died, Would anybody miss me or even care. I couldn't stand myself and I couldn't stand anybody. My relationships with everyone got bad. (REALLY REALLY BAD) I became Angry, irritated, Irrational, and very aggressive towards everyone and everything, I was spiraling horribly out of control deep into the darkness of depression. I stopped worrying about what day it was or what time of the day it was, and I didn't even know what day of the week it was anymore. I kept spiraling out of control, I binged on Food, Movies, Porn, YouTube videos, Facebook, And etc because it made me feel good for only a short period of time. I had really bad sleeping problems and even worse I got way more fat. (REALLY REALLY FAT) And before I knew it I looked in the mirror and stopped recognizing the once happy prosperous person I used to be. By that point I was completely lost. I didn't know who I was as a person anymore... I Was Completely Unrecognizable. I knew if I kept going on this downward trajectory (Path) I would. Fail At Life Hurt The People Around Me Be Unhappy For The Rest Of My Life I didn't want to do those things or be unhappy, So I was forced to find a solution because I couldn't take the pain anymore. Through Trial And Error, I Figured It Out AND I FINALLY BECAME THE MAN I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE. And I hope And Pray To The Lord That This Book Gives You That Same Liberation That I Have Received.

The once-thriving houseboat communities along Arkansas’s White River are long gone, and few remember the sensational murder story that set local darling Helen Spence on a tragic path. In 1931, Spence shocked Arkansas when she avenged her father’s murder in a DeWitt courtroom. The state soon discovered that no prison could hold her. For the first time, prison records are unveiled to provide an essential portrait. Join author Denise Parkinson for an intimate look at a Depression-era tragedy. The legend of Helen Spence refuses to be forgotten—despite her unmarked grave. “Most memorably, Parkinson evokes the natural beauty of the White River itself. But more importantly, she’s given Helen Spence, daughter of the river, a sympathetic hearing—something in its pulp version of events Daring Detective did not.”—Memphis Flyer “Denise details Helen’s life, from the murder of her father to the horrific treatment she received at the hands of the law, including how prison officials seemed to entice her to escape a final time, with the attempt culminating in her murder.”—Only in Arkansas

Book excerpt: INFLATION NATION by Tom Cammack - The "War Against Deflation" will end up being an economic and financial war that none of us are likely to forget. It will be a war between currency debasement (inflation) and credit contraction (deflation). As our money fails, people will increasingly seek out precious metals and commodities as stores of value. The end result will be what the author refers to as K-Flation -- "Killer Flation" -- inflation and deflation occurring simultaneously. Inflation will occur in daily necessities such as food, water, and fuel and deflation is likely to occur in housing and financial assets such as bonds and stocks. We face confusing and chaotic times ahead. The goal of this book is to help you understand what is happening and to prepare for what is coming down the road. Foreword written by T. Britton ("Britt") Harris IV, Chief Investment Officer of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and Member of the President's Working Group on Financial Markets.

Where have we gone wrong? Dr. Stephen Ilardi sheds light on our current predicament and reminds us that our bodies were never designed for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of twenty-first century life. Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for and what they continue to need. The Depression Cure program has already delivered dramatic results, helping even those who have failed to respond to traditional medications.
