Download or read book A Mammal's Notebook written by Erik Satie and published by Atlas Press (GB). This book was released on 2014 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the largest selection, in any language, of the writings of Erik Satie. Although he was dismissed as an eccentric by many, Satie has come to be seen as a key influence on modern music. The appeal of his writings, however, go far beyond their musical value. He is revealed as one of the most beguiling of absurdists, in the mode of Lewis Carroll or Edward Lear, but with a strong streak of Dadaism (a movement with which he collaborated).
Book Synopsis Beaver Island House Party by : Laurie Kay Sommers
Download or read book Beaver Island House Party written by Laurie Kay Sommers and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaver Island House Party examines the unique musical legacy of Beaver Island, the largest island in Lake Michigan, through discussions of past and present musical contexts, repertoires, collectors, and musicians; the accompanying CD includes eleven historic field recordings never before available except in archives and fourteen contemporary studio recordings. Settled by Irish immigrants in the nineteenth century, Beaver Island remains 35% Irish. The immigrant repertoire of Irish ballads, jigs, and reels has been supplanted over time by local songs, country western, and square and round dance tunes. The island's musical past has been preserved in field recordings by the late Ivan Walton, professor of English at the University of Michigan, and the prolific collector of American folk music, Alan Lomax, then with the Archive of Folk Song at the Library of Congress. The late Helen Collar, a summer visitor who studied the history of the Beaver Island Irish, also gathered extensive documentation. Few recordings of Michigan traditional music exist, and fewer still have book-length treatment of the musicians who created and played the tunes and the collectors who documented and preserved them. Beaver Island House Party provides a rare opportunity to examine the musical culture of a fascinating and distinctive island community.

Download or read book Dark Laughter written by Les Cleveland and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-02-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular culture is important in wartime. It asserts the values of patriotism, helps to create happy warriors, and expresses people's emotions. Here, Cleveland treats war as popular culture, using service songs, folklore, and popular music as a leitmotif to explore cultural relationships between military life and society. Drawing on 20th-century lyrics, occupational folklore, and rank-and-file parodies, protests, and sexual fantasies, he shows how crises of war are mediated by popular culture and how the soldier comes to terms with boredom, discomfort, and danger. Ranging from World War I to Vietnam and drawing on his own experience in World War II, Cleveland provides a unique treatment of military folklore and popular song in 20th-century warfare from the perspective of the ordinary soldier.
