It presents information that was collected over the last half century or so by a great variety of people, and tries to reach reasonably firm conclusions on the population's vital rates, age structure and future growth by combining the most satisfactory elements to a plausible pattern. But the data are fragmentary and defective, and the best elements in them cannot always be identified by analysis. Sometimes, a fairly subjective judgement as to what might have gone wrong during their collection is necessary to explain obvious distortions. The interpretation of incomplete sets of data of doubtful accuracy is thus an important facet of the work undertaken here and model distributions are used in the process. Ideally, model and reference distributions should serve to 'discipline' reported data (Brass 1969). In the present case there often is, unfortunately, little information that can be disciplined and models are mainly used to bridge gaps that would otherwise put an end to the analysis. But as they are chosen as judiciously as possible and by taking all sources into account, this is probably the best alternative.

Book excerpt: This is the first book that documents poverty systematically for the world's indigenous peoples in developing regions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The volume compiles results for roughly 85 percent of the world's indigenous peoples. It draws on nationally representative data to compare trends in countries' poverty rates and other social indicators with those for indigenous sub-populations and provides comparable data for a wide range of countries all over the world. It estimates global poverty numbers and analyzes other important development indicators, such as schooling, health, and social protection. Provocatively, the results show a marked difference in results across regions, with rapid poverty reduction among indigenous (and non-indigenous) populations in Asia contrasting with relative stagnation - and in some cases falling back - in Latin America and Africa. Two main factors motivate the book. First, there is a growing concern among poverty analysts worldwide that countries with significant vulnerable populations - such as indigenous peoples - may not meet the Millennium Development Goals, and thus there exists a consequent need for better data tracking conditions among these groups. Second, there is a growing call by indigenous organizations, including the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples, for solid, disaggregated data analyzing the size and causes of the "development gap."

He was the first Director of the Netherlands Interuniversity Demographic Institute, Scientific Secretary of the Royal Commission on Population, represented the Netherlands in the Population Commission of the United Nations, played a crucial role at the UN Population Conferences in Bucharest (1974), Mexico City (1984) and Cairo (1994), and was active in the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), which he founded. Van de Kaa also played an important role in establishing the postgraduate programme in demography pdoD (currently nethur-Demography).
