Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democratic Party: A History HE Democratic party has had an uninterrupted exist ence of nearly one hundred and thirty years. Founded in 1791 with Thomas Jefferson as its chief spon sor, it attracted immediately the enthusiastic and affection ate support of the masses of the people, who were determined that the institutions and government of the United States should have the character of a democracy and not an aristocratic system based upon the superior presump tions and pretensions of a few. Its development was so rapid that at the national elections of 1792 it secured control of the popular branch of Congress and cast 55 of the total 132 Electoral votes for President and vice-president. In 1796 it lacked but two votesxof the number required to decide the result in the 'electoral College; and in 1800 it won a triumphant victory, electing the President and Vice President and also a marked majority of the members of each house of Congress. Thus established as the ruling power of the nation, it was so maintained by the people, nearly always by overwhelming majorities, for an unbroken period of forty years, when it experienced a temporary reverse without, however, any abatement of its vitality or deviation from its original principles or character. Those principles and that character, distinguishing it as the party of the masses of the people in composition, instincts, action, and general acceptation, it has since preserved through all the vicissitudes of its fortunes. Malicious and slanderous assaults of these Black Republicans of the North. It is meet that this should be done plainly, Openly, fearlessly and immediately. Permit me, fel low Democrats, to utter this defence in my own way, neither you nor the Democratic party being responsible for any mistake I may make, real, or imaginary, or for anything I say in attempting what I esteem to be a just, a true and an honorable vindication of the South. In 1861 the Democrats had gone out of power on a great issue. They came back to power not on another great issue but because the lack Of issues between them and their Opponents made the character Of the candidates the determining factor for a large number of voters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes of the Democratic Party The letters which appear as correspondence called for this publication. The author was surprised that persons, elected to the legislatures would make such declarations as the second letter of the gentleman's contains. One would suppose that men of this standing should at least possess intelligence enough to show that he thoroughly understands the position of his political party. If man is conscientious in his convictions pf governmental policy (and wrong) he is partly justified in his position, but to make such declarations as are contained in the second letter written to the author, is in the face of facts an utter disregard of truth or exhibition of ignorance of the dangerous type. Being surrounded with obstacles and daily toil in the district school, our attention could not be steadily applied to the objects of this work, and was only accomplished by burning mid oil, and if its pages lightens the burdens of toil or give rest to the weary tramp, or tend to correct one single evil of society, we will feel amply repaid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Campaign Text-Book of the National Democratic Party: 1896 The preservation of Democratic principles and of the Democratic party demands the rejection of the platforms adopted by the Silver party at Chicago and St. Louis and of the candidates there put in nomination, whoso victory would mean defeat to the Democratic party and disaster to the country which it was organized to serve. This motive has caused the great uprising which the National Democratic organization represents. The Populist Democratic representatives of the Chicago and St. Louis platforms can make successful appeal to their hearers only by disregard of facts, figures and human experiences. This campaign text-book is issued by the National Democratic Committee to set forth the facts, the experiences and the arguments which refute their claims. It is intended for writers - especially for editors; and for speakers - particularly those engaged in debate; and it is put in handy form that it may be carried in the pocket and easily consulted. It is issued at a low price that it may also be used for general circulation, although it is not intended so much for a campaign document as for the use of those preparing campaign documents and speeches. It is intended, should the development of the campaign make it desirable, to issue early in October a supplement which will present additional facts and arguments. A newspaper supplement is also in preparation, giving documents, speeches, etc., in connection with the movement, to be issued at a low price ($12 per 1,000) for general use. Part first includes the address and platform of the National Democratic movement; sketches of the two tried Democrats who are the candidates of the Indianapolis Convention for President and Vice-President; their speeches of acceptance; and evidence as to which is the true Democratic party as witnessed by true Democrats. Part second sets forth, in successive chapters, the arguments, with the historical facts and statistical figures which justify them, refuting the position of the Silver party and, to some extent, the economic and financial heresies and errors which should prevent Democrats from supporting the sound money candidate of their historical opponents. The first chapter shows that the free-silver plunge is an experiment as new as it is dangerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democratic Reference Book for 1891 If Democrats stand together this year at the polls and sustain the harmonious action of the Saratoga Con'vention, the people will continue to reap in increasing degree the benefits of Demociatio economy, honesty and strict accountability of public servants. This contest will have a stron g and direct bearing upon the presidential campaign of next year. As goes New York, so goes the Union, continues to be a sound maxim of National politics. The election of a Republi can Governor of New York this year would be regarded by the world as a pledge of the electoral vote of the State to the Republican ticket next year. There never was greater necessity for Democratic unity and vigor, with a view to the affairs of the country, as well as_to those of the State.
