Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a degree of freedom or information content analysis of images and imaging systems in the context of digital image processing. As such it represents an attempt to quantify the number of truly independent samples one gathers with imaging devices. In quantifying the degrees of freedom of an imaging system it is necessary to develop an appropriate model. In this work the imaging system is modeled as a linear system through the continuous-discrete imaging equation. The associated gram matrix is then employed as an aid in defining the system degrees of freedom. The gram matrix eigenvalues are shown to be related to those of the associated continuous-continuous model and can be used to predict the discretized system performance. These ideas are then applied to the tomorgraphic or projection imaging system; and result in the ability to predict the performance of this system by indicating where redundant data is achieved, and the best ways of increasing the degrees of freedom with a minimum sample increase. The degrees of freedom of sampled image itself are developed as an approximation problem. Here bicubic splines with variable knots are employed in an attempt to answer the question as to what extent images are finitely representable in the context of a digital computer. Relatively simple algorithms for good knot placement are given, and result in spline approximations that achieve significant parameter reductions at acceptable error levels. The knots themselves are shown to be useful as an indicator of image activity, and have potential as an image segmentation device. (Author).

Book excerpt: Asteroids are diverse and numerous solar system objects, from the large number of objects in the main asteroid belt to the relatively small near-Earth population. Understanding their physical properties is essential to understanding the evolution of the solar system, and asteroid morphology is a complex field in its own right. The histories of individual asteroids, and particularly near-Earth objects, reflect continuous interaction among their shapes, rotation states, and orbits due to the effects of radiation pressure. Radar astronomy has provided detailed information on the orbits, sizes, shapes, rotation states, and composition of many asteroids. To improve the capabilities of asteroid radar observations, I have developed the technique of radar speckle tracking. The echoes from different points on the surface of a radar target interfere with each other, producing a pattern of bright and dark speckles across the surface of the Earth. Using radio astronomy techniques, I track the motion of speckles between several ground stations during a radar experiment to accurately determine the rotation state of the target. Speckle tracking is a powerful tool both to determine the orbital evolution of near-Earth asteroids, particularly potential Earth impactors, and to survey the overall physical properties of the asteroid population. In addition, I have studied applying the techniques of adaptive optics and radio interferometry to asteroid science. These will become more useful with the next generation of asteroid-detecting surveys and the construction of large sub-millimeter interferometers. Interferometry in particular will soon be able to survey the entire asteroid belt.

Origi nally an outgrowth of the annual Eurographics meeting, the workshop was organized by a dedicated group of researchers who felt there was insufficient opportunity at Eu rographics and Siggraph to exchange ideas specifically on rendering. Over the past 9 years, the workshop has become renown as an international watershed for top quality work in this field, attracting between 50 and 100 attendees each year to share their latest research. This year we received a total of 63 submissions. Each paper was carefully reviewed by two of the 25 international programme committee members, as well as two external reviewers, selected by the co-chairs from a pool of 71 individuals. (The programme committee and external reviewers are listed following the contents pages.) In this new review process, all submissions and reviews were handled electronically, with the ex ception of videos submitted with a few of the papers. This streamlined the review process considerably, while reducing the costs and confusion associated with courier delivery of hundreds of papers.
