Book excerpt: The object of this investigation was to study the deformation characteristics of bonded, prestressed concrete beams subjected to bending and shear. The effects of several variables on the moment-curvature relationship, load-deflection relationship and the distribution of curvature were studied. In all, fifteen beams having a 6 x 14 5/8-in. cross-section and a 10-in, effective depth were tested. Twelve beams were loaded with a single concentrated load at midspan and the remaining three beams were loaded with two loads symmetrical about midspan. From the test data obtained, load-deflection relationships, moment-curvature relationships, distributions of curvature and distributions of strain in the extreme compression fiber were derived. In addition, the derived moment-curvature relationships were compared with theoretical moment-curvature relationships and measured load-deflection relationships were compared with load-deflection relationships computed from the measured distributions of curvature. Correlation between the measured and theoretical moment-curvature relationships was good, except for the second and third stages of behavior. Computed deflections were found to be lower than the measured values for beams with a shear-span-to-depth ratio of 3.3. The tests indicated that the moment-curvature and load-deflection relationships were dependent on the characteristics of the beam cross-section. Span length and type of load condition also affected the load-deflection relationship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this thesis was to study the deformation characteristics of bonded, prestressed concrete beams loaded in flexure. Of particular interest was the moment-curvature relationship. All beams had a 6 x 12-in. cross-section and an effective depth of 10 in. Six of the beams were loaded at two points symmetrical about midspan and had a span length of 11 ft. The remaining four beams were loaded at midspan only. Two of these beams had an 11-ft. span and the other two a span of 56 -in. For the two-point loaded beams the percentage of reinforcement was varied from 0.19 to 0.53 and two levels of concrete strength were used. All the one-point loaded beams had reinforcement ratios of 0.38; the concrete strength was varied as for the two-point loaded beams. The load-deformation relationships exhibited three distinct stages of behavior. The amount of reinforcement had a considerable effect on the extent of these stages. Further investigation is required to study the behavior of similar beams having a concrete strength on the order of 3000 psi.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Reinforced Concrete Beams This Bulletin is the first one of a series of bulletins to be published by the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station. The Engineering Experiment Station was established by action of the Board of Trustees December 8, 1903. It is the purpose of the Station to carry on investigations along various lines of engineering and to study problems of importance to professional engineers and to manufacturing, railway, constructional and industrial interests of the state. The laboratories of the College of Engineering are being equipped with additional apparatus and facilities to further such research work. It is believed that this experimental work will result in contributions of value to engineering science and that the presence of such investigations will give inspiration to students and add efficiency to the College of Engineering. The Board of Direction of the Engineering Experiment Station consists of the Dean and six professors in the College of Engineering. The investigations are to be made under the supervision of the professor in charge of each laboratory. For copies of this bulletin and for further information address the Board of Direction of the Engineering Experiment Station, Urbana, Illinois. Book excerpt: Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in
