This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿPeek inside the mind one of Contemporary India's most influential poets Inside this book you'll find Dr. Ramesh Chandra Mukhopadhyaya, one of the most erudite philosopher-critics of India, brilliantly evaluating his compatriot English poet K.V. Dominic. Among the contemporary English poets of India, Dr. K.V. Dominic has established an unchallengeable position of his own. Through his poetry collectionsÿWinged Reason,ÿWrite Son, Write,ÿMulticultural Symphony,ÿContemporary Concerns and Beyond, andÿK.V. Dominic: Essential Readings and Study Guide, Dominic has beautifully portrayed themes of environmental, social, political, and humanitarian concerns. Mukhopadhyaya, with his unique style, critically and philosophically studies not only Dominic's poetry, but also the poet himself as a person with his background of family, town, state, and country. Being a master of Indian as well as western philosophy, Mukhopadhyaya digs out the philosophic thoughts lying hidden in many of the poems. In addition, his depth in English and Sanskrit literature has enabled him to make comparisons of Dominic's poems to those of the legends.ÿ "Dominic's poetry reflects India. This is the base of the study by Mukhopadhyaya who has taught literature and authored books. He finds Dominic's poetry irresistible. I add that Mukhopadyaya's book is enlightening and also irresistible. His study is a compassionate painting of Dominic's poetry with the shades that are eternal." --Dr. Stephen Gill, Canadian poet and novelist "Dr. Mukhopadhyaya's critique is a remarkable contribution to Dominic's poetry, as it is systematically written with philosophical explications and comparisons to great legends as well as classical poets of the East and the West. Indeed an important addition to the existing works on this major literary figure." --Dr. Rob Harle, Australian poet, author and artist "More than merely an analysis of Dominic's poems, this book is an insight into the vibrant philosophy experienced by the Indian mind that has amalgamated both the perennial bliss and the painful vicissitudes of life to foster sublime and universal notions of life. As the volume reveals the personality of the poet, it invites attention to the authenticity of the impersonal theory of poetry." --Dr. S. Download or read book Wounds of Love written by Frank Graziano and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peruvian mystic St. Rose of Lima (Isabel Flores y Oliva, 1586-1617) was canonized in 1671 as the first saint of the New World and remains the object of widespread devotion today. In this engrossing new study, Frank Graziano uses the example of St. Rose to explore the meaning of female mysticism and the way in which saints are products of their cultures. Virginity, austerity, eucharistic devotion, incessant mortification, and mystical marriage to Christ characterized the devotional regimen that structured St. Rose's entire life. Many of her mystical practices echo the symptoms of such modern psychological disorders as masochism, depression, hysteria, and anorexia nervosa. Graziano offers a sophisticated argument not only for the origins and meaning of these behaviors in Rose's case, but also for the reason her culture venerated them as signs of sanctity. In the process he explores a wide range of themes, from the idea of suffering as an expression of love to the assimilation of childhood trauma through religious repetition. Graziano also offers a penetrating analysis of the politics of Rose's canonization. He finds that her mystical union with God--bypassing the institutional channels of sacrament and priestly mediation--was inherently subversive to the bureaucratized Church. Canonization was a cooptation by which Rose's competing claim to Christ was integrated into the Catholic canon. The book concludes with a fascinating exploration of mystical eroticism, with its intense experiences of vision and ecstasy. The eroticized suffering of many mystics is shown to be very human in origin: the mystic's wounded love is projected onto a God conceived to accommodate it. Wounds of Love is based on a decade of research in archives, rare books, and an extraordinary range of secondary sources. Introducing an innovative method that integrates history, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and clinical psychology, this compelling work offers a bold new interpretation of female mysticism.

Organized in thematic chapters that loosely follow the arc of a love affair, the book journeys from "Innocence" (the notion of a virgin being "deflowered" originated with the belief that flowers were pure and sexless), through such stages as "Flirtation," "Seduction," "Lust," "Deception," and "Rapture." Scattered throughout are love potions, examples from the Victorian "language of flowers," and charming anecdotes, all told in Day's delightfully irreverent and conversational voice. Download or read book Van Gogh's Gardens written by Derek Fell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-04-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the passions driving Vincent Van Gogh's extraordinary art, one of the greatest was his abiding preoccupation with flowers, gardens and the natural landscape. Living in poverty, however, he was never able to translate the breathtaking visions on his canvas into an actual garden. Now, thanks to Derek Fell's marvellous images, insightful writing and reverent adherence to Van Gogh's original botanical ideas, Van Gogh's gardens have finally come to brilliant life. Drawing inspiration from his dazzling paintings of sunflowers, irises and Provencal landscapes as well as from the eloquent letters he wrote to his brother and sister about colour harmonies and planting ideas, Fell has lovingly created and photgraphed the living embodiment of Van Gogh's singular reflections on colour and nature. More than 130 original colour photographs show the roots of his ideas in the French landscape today and reveal exactly how those ideas will look in our own backyards, including contemporary gardens that embrace such unconventional, Van Gogh-inspired pairings as geraniums with poppies and heliotrope with roses. The book also showcase twenty of the master's most stunning paintings of landscapes and flowers.
Book Synopsis Biblical women in early modern literary culture, 1550–1700 by : Victoria Brownlee
Download or read book Biblical women in early modern literary culture, 1550–1700 written by Victoria Brownlee and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once pervasive and marginal, appealing and repellent, exemplary and atypical, the women of the Bible provoke an assortment of readings across early modern literature. Biblical women in early modern literary culture, 1550–1700 draws attention to the complex ways in which biblical women’s narratives could be reimagined for a variety of rhetorical and religious purposes. Considering a confessionally diverse range of writers, working across a variety of genres, this volume reveals how women from the Old and New Testaments exhibit an ideological power that frequently exceeds, both in scope and substance, their associated scriptural records. The essays explore how the Bible’s women are fluidly negotiated and diversely redeployed to offer (conflicting) comment on issues including female authority, speech and sexuality, and in discussions of doctrine, confessional politics, exploration and grief. As it explores the rich ideological currency of the Bible’s women in early modern culture, this volume demonstrates that the Bible’s women are persistently difficult to evade.
Book Synopsis Space of a Garden – Space of Culture by : Grzegorz Gazda
Download or read book Space of a Garden – Space of Culture written by Grzegorz Gazda and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the phenomenon of the garden and its various cultural features. It compares historical aspects of the garden with its contemporary models and focuses on various cultural traditions and different ways of presentation of this problem, in the context of world literature, problems of visual arts, questions of architecture, ecology, universal aspects of language, as well as philosophical problems of axiology and aesthetics. All those contexts combine to form a picture of a phenomenon that could be called “the metaphor of the garden”, containing a universal anthropological image of “space” in which dynamic re-evaluation of rhetorical models take place and the order of Nature complements cultural models of human understanding of reality.
Book Synopsis Gardening in Eden by : Arthur T. Vanderbilt II
Download or read book Gardening in Eden written by Arthur T. Vanderbilt II and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-03-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Though an old man," Thomas Jefferson wrote at Monticello, "I am but a young gardener." Every gardener is. In Gardening in Eden, we enter Arthur Vanderbilt's small enchanted world of the garden, where the old wooden trestle tables of a roadside nursery are covered in crazy quilts of spring color, where a catbird comes to eat raisins from one's hand, and a chipmunk demands a daily ration of salted cocktail nuts. We feel the oppressiveness of endless winter days, the magic of an old-fashioned snow day, the heady, healing qualities of wandering through a greenhouse on a frozen February afternoon, the restlessness of a gardener waiting for spring. With a sense of wonder and humor on each page, Arthur Vanderbilt takes us along with him to discover that for those who wait, watch, and labor in the garden, it's all happening right outside our windows.
