Book excerpt: This pathbreaking book explains why, contrary to all expectations, Americans are working harder than ever. Juliet Schor presents the astonishing news that over the past twenty years our working hours have increased by the equivalent of one month per year--a dramatic spurt that has hit everybody: men and women, professionals as well as low-paid workers. Why are we--unlike every other industrialized Western nation--repeatedly ”choosing” money over time? And what can we do to get off the treadmill?

Download or read book Readings in Applied Microeconomics written by Craig Newmark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central concern of economics is how society allocates its resources. Modern economies rely on two institutions to allocate: markets and governments. But how much of the allocating should be performed by markets and how much by governments? This collection of readings will help students appreciate the power of the market. It supplements theoretical explanations of how markets work with concrete examples, addresses questions about whether markets actually work well and offers evidence that supposed "market failures" are not as serious as claimed. Featuring readings from Hayek, William Baumol, Harold Demsetz, Daniel Fischel and Edward Lazear, Benjamin Klein and Keith B. Leffler, Stanley J. Liebowitz and Stephen E. Margolis, and John R. Lott, Jr., this book covers key topics such as: • Why markets are efficient allocators • How markets foster economic growth • Property rights • How markets choose standards • Asymmetric Information • Whether firms abuse their power • Non-excludable goods • Monopolies The selections should be comprehended by undergraduate students who have had an introductory course in economics. This reader can also be used as a supplement for courses in intermediate microeconomics, industrial organization, business and government, law and economics, and public policy.

Book Synopsis Capitalism and the Political Economy of Work Time by : Christoph Hermann
Download or read book Capitalism and the Political Economy of Work Time written by Christoph Hermann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Maynard Keynes expected that around the year 2030 people would only work 15 hours a week. In the mid-1960s, Jean Fourastié still anticipated the introduction of the 30-hour week in the year 2000, when productivity would continue to grow at an established pace. Productivity growth slowed down somewhat in the 1970s and 1980s, but rebounded in the 1990s with the spread of new information and communication technologies. The knowledge economy, however, did not bring about a jobless future or a world without work, as some scholars had predicted. With few exceptions, work hours of full-time employees have hardly fallen in the advanced capitalist countries in the last three decades, while in a number of countries they have actually increased since the 1980s. This book takes the persistence of long work hours as starting point to investigate the relationship between capitalism and work time. It does so by discussing major theoretical schools and their explanations for the length and distribution of work hours, as well as tracing major changes in production and reproduction systems, and analyzing their consequences for work hours. Furthermore, this volume explores the struggle for shorter work hours, starting from the introduction of the ten-hour work day in the nineteenth century to the introduction of the 35-hour week in France and Germany at the end of the twentieth century. However, the book also shows how neoliberalism has eroded collective work time regulations and resulted in an increase and polarization of work hours since the 1980s. Finally, the book argues that shorter work hours not only means more free time for workers, but also reduces inequality and improves human and ecological sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the most recent phase or stage of capitalist development: neoliberal globalization. Neoliberalism, as much a political project as an economic one, is still pervasive, and it continues to provide the general framework for politics and political imagination across most of the globe. The book brings together a group of scholars from different parts of the world looking at the impact of neoliberalism on societies. And, as such, it contributes as much to the critique and overcoming of this process as to its analysis. With its extensive coverage, both geographically and thematically, the book will be of interest for students of the social sciences, as well as for anyone making an effort to understand and change the world. Book Synopsis Myths Of Rich And Poor by : Michael W. Cox
Download or read book Myths Of Rich And Poor written by Michael W. Cox and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular wisdom holds that the years since 1973 -- the end of the "postwar miracle" -- have been a time of economic decline and stagnation: lackluster productivity, falling real wages, and lost competitiveness. The rich have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer, and most of us have barely held on while watching all the best jobs disappear overseas. As Myths of Rich and Poor demonstrates, this picture is not just wrong, it's spectacularly wrong. The hard numbers, simple facts, and iconoclastic arguments of this book will change the way you think about the American economy.
